What Will Universal’s Dante’s Inferno Look Like?

dantes inferno

Electronic Arts has released a trailer for Dante’s Inferno, the video game which was subject to a Hollywood bidding war, which ended with Universal Pictures winning the right to develop a big screen movie adaptation. The property is a modern interpretation of the famous poem written by Dante Alighieri in the early 1300’s. The narrative poem describes Dante’s imaginary journey through the nine circles of hell where they see sinners being punished for their sins on Earth. Check out the trailer after the jump thanks to /Gamer. It gives you an idea of the game’s style, which was one of the huge selling points of a possible movie adaptation.

First off, I'm not convinced I really want to see a film of this. I'd love to see a slow, introspective film of the Poem itself from the likes of Guillermo Del Toro, but this is easily bland action fare if you're taking it from the game.

Despite that, the trailer for the game screams Zack Snyder. I have the utmost faith in Snyder's ability to make anything a thrilling visual experience with stunning, and sometimes shocking, brutal violence, as I'm sure the film would require.

So, in short, I imagine Universal's Dante's Inferno will look something like a Zack Snyder film.
  • That's visionary director Zack Snyder to you!

    rofl

if ever there was a man worthy of such a title
  • How about Tarsem?
  • Ryan Carell
Interesting, and I would love to see that.

This has really nothing to do with Dantes Inferno.. expect there are 9 circles in hell.
  • Exactly!! Aside from being an absolute insult to Dante, the entire point of the original poem seems non-existent. Does anyone understand what a metaphor is anymore??? Or is that too literal of a question?
  • I prefer similes.
  • Don't you remember the 24th canto of Inferno where Dante jumps off of a crumbling rock bridge while spinning his bone staff and hurtling towards a monster? I'm sorry if all of you philistines just don't get it.
  • some of the monsters look cute and spore-like.
  • That looks fucking stupid.
  • Spence
It looks okay until you get to the huge, cartoony "chatter-teeth" monsters, then it seems to become Beetlejuice.
  • It's there thoughtin the poem, line 46

When he came, he made his way towards me
With head high, and seemed ravenously hungry,
and he had, like chattery teeth, like something out of that olde film Beetlejuice.

Man, this is faithful. Soon we won't need bookss.
  • I remember that poem...

"And God said, "Let there be, like, a big ass demon,
with, like, glowing eyes... And you climb on it!"
Yeah, God sayeth you climbeth oneth thine glowy eye beast
And then thine descendeth offeth the mountain
With a list of commandments from God!"

    Man, the bible rocks.
  • aaaaaaaaaaa
funny, but to set it straight, it isn't from the bible. it's from the divine comedy. by dante. thus the name "dante's inferno"
  • The fact that you took that seriously, I got -2 points and you got +4 points, has made me lose faith in the people who post on this site (among other things). Maybe you didn't find the first part of my comment funny, maybe you did, but how in the hell could anybody think that last part is anything but a joke? It states in the article that this is from a "poem written by Dante Alighieri in the early 1300’s" and I said "the bible rocks." Who the hell says that the bible rocks when they aren't joking?
  • FatherBradley
I like how you over explain unfunny things - making them unfunnier. That rocks.
  • As long as we have a 3 hour movie, or a videogame to play through, why read???
  • SPARTACVS
Just so you know, "chatter teeth" was a creation of the creature designer that works with Guillermo Del Toro.
  • JDee
It seems like God of War, almost...
  • Tomás Roa
    My thoughts exacty.
  • Man I was just saying the same thing...looks ok tho...
  • My thoughts exactly. The trailers are almost identical...almost.
  • Tom
Wow, it's JUST like the poem!
  • rot
I officially lost interest in this movie.
  • OK, so, This trailer kind of blows compared to the original teaser trailer (can access it through the link in the video above). The OG trailer was more intense and pretty bad ass, he shoves a crucifix into some dudes face in the end in a pretty savage way.

I also figured out what all those "Chatter-teeth monsters" are supposed to represent, it shows a brief picture of them in the OG teaser with the headline "gluttony". So... They represent gluttony... Because... They're just big mouths attached to a bulbous body... kinda reminds me of that movie "slither". Did anybody see Slither? Man, that movie rocked shit.

The resemblance is uncanny, to say the very least.

This game, and the movie if its something like this, completely butchers the point of the poem. It is sad how today's culture takes a classic poem talking about Hell and turns it into an action game.
  • D's A
    Sorry, modern adaptation?
  • Joe Chicklets
It looks exactly like Ninja Gaiden 3...
  • Joe CHicklets
meant to say Ninja Gaiden 2*

The style is neat for an action game.

But I don't get why they have to call it Dante's Inferno. As it's nothing like the poem.
  • Dialted Thought
meh, honestly, It looks so average. Nothing new, and until I see some game play footage, I'll keep this off of my radar.
  • Dialted Thought
not including the fact that it misses the point of the actual Dante's Inferno
  • What a heaping pile of crap
  • I thought it looked cool. I'm not sold on a movie but the game looks interesting
  • CodeOptimist
Looks a lot like God of War meets Shadow of the Colossus. It could be cool, if it doesn't end up being horribly derivative.
  • Nora Inu
Oh, *please* let the final boss be Brutus and Cassius, as in the poem. 2000 after the assassination of Julius Caesar, that wound just hasn't healed yet... Closure at last!

But as long as they don't turn Virgil into some sort of chirpy, Navi-esque crime against literature, I'll forgive the bescythening of Dante...
  • I can't believe Hollywood was fighting over a game, its like a bunch of retards are in charge...
  • Well, considering that these days every movie is a remake, a musical, a book, a comic or a game I'm not all that surprised. I mean, why come up with something new and creative when you can just rip the script off something else, right?
  • i wish i could give you 1000 plusses for this post
  • I only speak the truth ;)
  • Buddy the Elf
so based on the minute and a half trailer we know that this has nothing to do with the original poem? yeahhhhh...hold judgements, the games probably gonna be bad ass, thats what EA does. as for movies based on games, a recipe for disaster.
  • dagreenman18
Im cautiously optimistic. If this was Old EA i would know this is shit, but this is new EA. an EA who actually gave chances to 3 awesome games last year and was awesome enough to pick up Schafer's Brutal Legend. so the game is a maybe in my book.

as for a movie, i just don't know. there have been too many awful movies based on games and only half of the are so bad it's good ( i love you Street Fighter the movie).
  • Kevin
I love it. I bet you half of these people haven't even read Dante's Inferno before, yet bash this trailer to jump the bandwagon.

Looks pretty cool, you can't follow the poem 100%, it'd be a snooze fest. Wake up people, sadly Hollywood has to somewhat connect with the ADD audience.
  • AMEN
  • cigaretteburns
reminds me of Constantine and Francis Lawrence's style
  • Oh Cap, you are always so brutally to the point, lol.
  • It's how I roll.
