Rumor: Kevin Williamson Writing New Scream Trilogy?

scream

RopesOfSilicon received an anonymous email which contained a screenshot from the William Morris Agency Intranet (basically, the internal internet of Hollywood’s top talent agency). The screenshot shows a company email announcing that original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson has signed on to script a new trilogy of Scream films for The Weinstein Co. It should be noted that we’re not sure if this is real or fake, but we’ve heard rumblings for some time that The Weinstein Co wanted to make another Scream film. But three Scream films? Especially in this down economy? You never know, horror always sells — look at how much Lionsgate makes off the Saw franchise year after year. But for right now lets mark this as rumor.

If Weinstein Co does launch a new Scream film, I would expect it to be more of a reboot than sequel, possibly with some of the original players coming back in some cameo capacity. The thing I liked about the original Scream was the meta aspect of it all. Having a horror movie in a world where the characters have seen all the horror moves, and playing off the conventions of the genre in fun anc clever ways. The sequels suffered from being even more meta, with the characters discussing a movie basd on the events of the original film, and introducing actors who played some of the actors from that original film. The whole thing got confusing, unrelatable and pretty dumb. I would hope that if they do a next film, it would be set in a more reality based world than the Scream sequels, and reference real horror movies instead of the Stab series.

Honestly, nearly any horror movie is better than the Saw series (except the first film). A new scream, while it could be a complete disaster, already sounds better than Saw.
  • I'd rather they make Edgar Wright's "Don't".
  • Ryan Carell
I've always been a fan of Scream, and even to some extent the sequels. I agree completely that the sequels ran convoluted and lost any sense of focus simply trying to make a grab at some self-satire, and so I'm with Peter that there'd have to be a reboot to re-establish a sense of order.

I'm always one of the first to speak out against remakes and sequels, as I prefer complete stories that handle everything within themselves and rarely does a sequel want to be complete. Studios always want to leave us wanting more so that we horde ourselves in theatres for the next installment.

Still, I think there's alot of room for some brilliance in a new Scream film, though maybe not 3 new ones.

I'm a fan of the first 2, but the third one was painful to watch, and clearly they made it just for the sake of making it. The story and ending was ridiculous. I woudn't mind seeing the old gang back for a 4th film only if the script actually made sense this time and to end that series on a better note than that third film did, but I wouldn't want another 3 films with them again. If they're doing it for another 3 films then please let it be a complete reboot. The only one I'd want to see back in a reboot (and would still make sense) is Courtney Cox's character, Gail, as a reporter.

I'd watch it. I still like Scram and Scream 2, agree with everyone on 3. Which Williamson didn't write as I recall? So maybe this will be his end to it all, with a new beginning tacked on for good measure...

Also, if they can write and crank them out, maybe someone will take on Saw every Halloween, that'd be nice to see.
  • Seems like those suits at Hollywood have worked out how to break the law of diminshing returns. Not a sequel see, a reboot or a reimagining. It'll be Scream 4 but we'll call it a reboot. This will mean people will care. This film is already getting far more attention than it deserves.

I'd rathar see a Dawsons Creek reunion where they all get murdered horribly. (As opposed to nicely murdered i guess.) Doesn't have to be part of the scream franchise.

THIS HALLOWEEN PREPARE TO GO BACK TO THE CREEK!!!!

crappy theme music: I don't want to to wait for our lives to be over,

    WAITINGS OVER BITCH!!!

    screams, explosions, brutal deaths. Sold.
  • Man, I'd do anything to get Dawson back...
  • Atomic Boner
only way imseein this shit is if Neve Campbell shows some titty

"im gonna wear the Scream mask when im doin you (Neve Campbell) from behind"

Kenny Rogers described my all time, number one fantasy
  • I loved Scream in its day, but is this really what we need? What Scream did to horror is still felt in some capacity in the horror films of today, so why remake something that has yet to completely go away? No one feels nostalgia for something barely a decade old.
  • why do people hate the SAW franchise?!?! I think it's decent....
  • the original was effing great. the second was a joke, but that's because James Wan didn't write it. The third one was also pretty sick.

If they take their time to make ONE good scream reboot, i think that will be enough. if this rumor is true though, God help us.

    3 more?
  • I don't think a lot of young people today have even seen SCREAM trilogy anyway.. aahh, the 90s.
  • I miss Neve Campbell, they need to bring her back for a big role in the next SCREAM reboot.
  • yeah. that would be funny. It seems that the 90s is slowly making a comeback, since everyone's getting sick of Hollywood's 80s mania.
  • The Wackness FTW!

<pst> Kevin Williamson- don't write flat, cliched cutouts of "teenagers" simply to multiply a body count. have characters that are actually developed beyond "the jock, the outsider, the slut etc." which have been done 120916428 times over. also have a plan for the whole trilogy (if one even needs to be made) in order to keep us guessing who the victims are going to be to the end! i want to see someone throw away the "rule book" so that i dont know exactly who's going to get the axe 30 seconds into the trailer. a smart Scream that doesn't play to the stereotypes and steers away from the "i know which ones are going to die, but how's the killer going to do it?" subgenre of late (i'm lookin at you Friday the 13th) will be much more exciting and interesting. I'm tired of rooting for the killer bc everyone else is so annoying. who knows, maybe you can rewrite the slasher genre again with this one and give birth to a string of movies that are actually scary b/c they are filled with smart and well developed characters that we care about going up against a very real threat... ugh, i can dream can't i? put me down as optimistic for this one.
  • Go for it, Scream was and still is a fun movie to watch.
  • Haha that would be awesome...damn I hated that annoying ass song too...
  • Loved the first 'Scream'...and I actually wouldn't mind seeing a newer version, I just hope they don't fuck it up..
  • It deems a little early for this. scream holds up really well and doesn't need a reboot yet. It's only been thirteen years.

  • Shouldn't this be under the worst idea ever section?
  • Kevin Williamson's Scream script was the first script that I read and really enjoyed when I was just starting to get into movies.... and I still think it's a really brilliant one

I never forget the opening sequence ("I wanna know who I am looking at")

Seems odd that he would want to rewrite something he's already written a first time. I imagine his time would be better spent writing something new.
  • I think the time of the Scream movies has come and gone, I'm not sure if they could bring it back with anything original to add. Of course you never know.
  • i would be interested in how they redo it, after almost 10 years since the last one came out. i admit scream 3 wasn't the best, but it would be interesting to see how kevin williamson would redo it, with a fresh slate. i don't think he should use the sidney character in the films cause that is done... and definitely, not a sidney has a child kinda deal. but i trust that he'd come up with something cool for it.
  • I just have to say that the Scream franchise isn't old enough for a reboot. I know you guys could give examples of shorter lifespans of other ridiculous things that got rebooted, but the difference is that the Scream franchise was a money maker. If they were to bring back the original cast and have something happen or however they plan to do it, it would make a considerable amount of money.

The thing I really didn't like about the last Sceam movie was the fact that they introduced more characters based off the original characters just so they could increase the body count. Scream 1 and 2 were good but the 3rd was horrendous. I think that Scream does need an addition because where they left off was a bad place. Alot more sequels generally doesn't mean better quality films, but I think it would be a step up from the second sequel.
  • Three films? No. If the Weinstein's are seriously running low on ideas then I'd suggest them getting Wes Craven back to pen and direct a fourth Scream film, which could potentially be good at best, however a whole trilogy? And if it's going to be a reboot that'll be even worse!

What the hell! Scream 3 was well ace and scream 2 was the worst + scream 1 was amazing stilll. SCREAM 3 WAS THE BEST!!!!
  • santamonica
Lol, what makes this guy think that anyone wants another Scream trilogy? well maybe they do, but let's face it, it's as dated and cliched as things can get and is certainly doing nothing to move modern horror on. This will suck and I will not pay to see it. However I will pay to see it if Neve gets her breasts out.
