Gore Verbinski to Direct Clue

Universal Pictures has made a series of deals with Hasbro to adapt board games and toys into big screen movies. Last year the studio signed Ridley Scott to develop a movie based on Monopoly. Over the past month it was announced that Platinum Dunes was developing a movie based around the Ouija board, Etan Cohen was writing a screenplay for Candyland with Enchanted director Kevin Lima to direct,  and Steve Oedekerk to write a big screen adaptation of Stretch Armstrong.

And now comes news that Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski has signed on with Universal to direct and produce a live-action adaptation of the board game Clue. While most of the other properties might seem like odd choices, Clue has a murder mystery storyline that seems much easier to turn into a narrative story.

As you know, the board game is set in a big mansion where a murder has taken place. The competitors try to uncover who committed the murder, Professor Plum, Ms. White, Col. Mustard, Miss Peacock, Mr. Green or Ms. Scarlet, what murder weapon was used, either a knife, rope, candlestick, wrench, pistol or a lead pipe, and what room the murder was committed in. The board game has made over $1 billion in sales over the last 61 years.

The board game was previously turned into a big screen film in 1985, and while the black comedy was a critical and financial failure at the time of it’s release, the film has gone on to develop a cult following on DVD and television airings. Most interesting is that the film actually is one of the only mainstream movies I know of which was released with alternative endings. Depending on which theater you screening the movie, moviegoers were presented with one of three different endings. Newspapers listed the film with an A, B or C depending on the ending included with the print. It would be interesting if they tried to do such a gimmick in the Internet age, and if the gimmick would result in more ticket sales.

Verbinski is an interesting choice because he has experience in bringing fantastical period stories to life with a great mix of realism and wonderful visuals. However, this is just one of the films that Verbinski has on his plate. I think I would much rather see his big screen adaptation of the video game Bioshock than another Clue movie.

I'm one of those who love the original Clue. If Verbinski doesn't cast Tim Curry, I'm not interested.
  • I DON'T WANT CLUE WITHOUT CURRY!!!! God I've seen the 1985 film like a thousand times... it's one of my most cherished childhood movies of all time.
  • Melissa
Yes, Tim Curry is a must. The movie could be a tad bit darker though, keep the alternative endings
  • C'mon... I am interested in the Ouija board movie and mildly curious as to what Scott will do with Monopoly, but leave Clue alone... That movie was awesome, with an allstar cast and extremely comical mutiple endings... Leave well enough alone, will ya.
  • you forgot Candyland, too
  • Seth
Agreed. Let's see "Bioshock" and leave "Clue" alone. It's a classic that doesn't need a new treatment.
  • Nothing wrong with the original 'Clue', to echo the comments above.
  • Totally, Bioshock > Clue reboot.
  • Now that comic books have been (or soon will be) done to death... now comes, board games. Hollywood's new free idea bucket.
  • Yep...I have to say that this is a better idea than Stretch Armstrong or CandyLand though...
  • Amen to that. i hope Stretch never lives to see the light of day.
  • Yes. No Curry, no Clue.
  • Agreed. Give us Curry.
  • curry or scurry.
  • we should totally make a "Curry or Scurry!" pledge website! like Rocky fans rallied with the "STOP THE REMAKE" website!
  • Agreed.
  • Marko
Does Hasbro have any other properties that they're planning on making into movies?
  • Ben Candle
The Clue movie is actually one of the films in the hazy future that I'm most excited for, now that Gore's onboard. ^ ^
  • I need martin mull to make me happy
  • i really enjoyed the original clue movie from 1985 with tim curry. i remember the running around figuing out who did what with what at the climax of the film. brilliant stuff. hope they keep it in that kind of a feel.
  • Palmer
What is up with that picture of Clue?
  • Clue the Movie holds a dear place in my heart. So why remake it?
  • René
I LOVE the Clue movie, i hope they notice messing with cult films involves high flop risk and drop the project due to the high risk involved

Better start doing a script about OPERATION! totally serious and dramatic:

    - "And now removing the wish bone"[lots of suspense-ish sounds]
    - "¡Oh my God is buzzing!"
    - Quick, take it out! take it out!

    2 hours later...

    - "We did our best, but we couldn't get that butterfly out of your stomach"
    - "Am I gonna die?"
    - "I'm sorry"
    - NOOOOOOO!!!!!!
  • I don't think this stupid remake is gonna be better than the beloved 80s classic.
  • Mr. Green: Bill Hader
    Mrs. Peacock: Joan Cusack
    Col. Mustard: Zach Galifianakis
    Wadsworth: Peter Sarsgaard
    Ms. Scarlet: Elizabeth Banks
    Prof. Plum: Paul Rudd
    Mrs. White: Jenna Fischer

    Just Saying...that's good on-the-spot casting.

Verbinski will do an GREAT JOB, but it's all about the script and casting, to me. That's what made the first one such a good comedy.

*Then again, the original was cast by Jenkins and Hershinsen who are incredible. And the cast was so well rounded.
  • I'm predicting it will be Col. Mustard in the dining room with the candlestick.
  • You know what this made me think of? There's probably "one of the writers of scary movie" out there penning a film titled "Remake Movie." I can see it now - starring Paris Hilton, Carmen Elektra, and Tom Arnold....
  • FatherBradley
I want to see a movie based on darts. It could be called "Bullseye" and star Micky Rourke as an aging darts pro who makes a comeback after reconciling his life with the daughter he ignored throughout her childhood....so he could go play darts. You're welcome Hollywood.
  • Tonberry2k
Oh, come on. 'Planet of the Apes' didn't bother me. 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' I shrugged at. But This? This remake is unforgivable.
  • i'm going to bring the game with me so i can enact while i watch it.
  • i'm going to bring the game with me so i can enact the scenes while i watch it.
  • Battleship, Jenga, Scrabble, Risk, The Game of Life, Cabbage Patch Kids, Lincoln Logs, My Little Pony, and Easy Bake Oven are all in development.
  • I'm pretty sure that in CLUE: The Musical , it was interactive and the audience would be asked "whodunnit!?" and the actors would do the ending accordingly. Which probably explains why they did those alternate endings in the different movie theatres at the time.
    Very Interesting.
  • Peter, isn't he already signed to direct Bioshock next? Or am I very wrong. Because Verbinski's Bioshock would be awesome.
  • Old Clue movie is one of my favorites - and I remember staring at the paper as a kid torn between which theater to go (C was the best, b/c it was the "real" ending)
  • John
This will mostly depend on the cast. It would be great if they could get a lot of A list actors to do this, like the old Irwin Allen movies used to do at the time. But please don't cast the Jonas Brothers or any teen stars to make this some kind of teen film.
  • Please be better then Mouse Trap.
Next film : Hungry Hungry Hippo's
  • Hungry Hungry Hippos has the potential to be the best horror film of all time.
  • No Tim Curry, no interest...
  • Next thing you know, they'll be making a Sims movie.
    ... Oh, wait ...

Jokes aside, I loved the 1985 Clue. It was insanely entertaining. I think I need more information to make a judgment and determine how I feel about this one, but I'm not entirely against it... yet.
  • I loved this Movie. I have no interest in seeing it remade. Please work on original material and leave the great 80's movies alone!
  • Kate
Let's just pray they keep the high level of comedy that the original had.
If they dumb it down for the masses and just throw in a bunch of farce and slapstick count me out.

Also there had better be three endings...that's what made it so celver to begin with.

    Also just an idea
    but
    johnny depp as prof plum
    meryl streep as ms white

and hugh laurie as the buttler if they wont give us curry again.
  • Board games as films.

    Has the world gone mental?

    Seriously.

    Has the world gone mental.

    I desire an answer.
  • I'm with you there...it just seems like most people in charge have no imagination...
  • The ouija board doesn'y count as a board game. I don't know if you guys in the states can buy them off the shelves at your local wall mart or something but it really doesn't qualify as a board game.

(can you buy them at wal mart?)
  • guestlady
I don't know about wal mart, because I refuse to shop there. But you can buy them in the board game sections of Toys R Us, and other department stores and toy stores. Pretty crazy, as I don't really consider it to be a board game either.
  • The only way I could support a new clue is if it were funnier than the original or really dark and moody. Otherwise I will stick to the old one. Curry or Scurry.
  • why bother >??? we know the butler did it? and you cant get much better than the cast we had last time ( mull, curry). I mean, they really need to get some crerative ideas. i am eriting book on how hollywood runs out of ideas and sequel;s and TURN TO.... HAHAHA, YOU'LL HAVE TO READ MY BOOK TO FIND OUT. either way, this is terrible news, a poor decision by executives who have demonstrated yet again, how out of touch and inept that are. funny, i am sure they are proud amongst their friends and family, but in reality they are failures.

    thanks!
  • Graham
    Are you guys kidding?
According to BoxOfficeMojo the film of the game 'Twister' made almost half a billion worldwide!!

...don't know what all that crap with tornados was about, though.
  • Seriously what is going on with the recent board-game adaptions? Granted, this doesn't sound as terrible as Ouija Board or Monopoly projects, but it doesn't exactly get the blood flowing. Some new ideas please Hollywood!
