“It was the egg rolls, not the ecstasy.” If you missed the second episode of HBO’s revelatory Eastbound and Down last night due to misplacing your savings in an Oscar pool, that’s no friggin’ excuse! EB&D > “Jai Ho” on repeat. Will Ferrell made his debut appearance as a BMW dealer named Ashley Schaeffer, the embodiment of shithot blond ambition. Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers continued his fall from the bleachers of Major League Baseball by hoovering blow in a school parking lot, capsizing a bird fountain, and mistaking a tween dance for a romantic rave. But perhaps what stood out most of all was the direction of David Gordon Green, who nailed an indescribable tone that fell somewhere between a hilarious Southern Sopranos, Freeway and his Pineapple Express.

It’s been pretty interesting reading aging critics’ reserved reactions thus far, but we’re more curious to know what you thought of the pilot episode and this one. How funny was the RoboCop line? Is Kenny Powers at all likable? What is your take on McBride, Ben Best and Jody Hill’s brand of comedy? Lastly, you named your daughter after fucking Titanic?

If you’re not clued in on the show just yet, check out my uncensored exclusive set visit from late ‘08.

  • Yeah its a pretty awesome show.
  • Charles
I don't know about you but Will Ferrel looks like a young Ric Flair.
  • The first episode was better the second time around.
This one sold me!! I can't wait to see it again.
  • Yeah McBride is a douche bag on the show but he is hilarious so yeah he is likable.
"He's with me, don't bust balls"
  • eastbound is hilarious!!
  • frank c
    awesome show!
  • Stryker
This show is pretty hilarious so far. I just hope by the end there is some pathos (I hope I'm using that right) to Kenny Powers. He doesn't really need to become likable, just a purpose for going on this journey with him. Like the ending they gave McBride in the Foot Fist Way. Hilarious so far, I loved how during his dance of love the music would go from normal to slow to really fast and than back to slow. I was like a Snyder film. Ferrell was also pretty hilarious, but with a dark touch to him this time.
  • Jud
David Gordon Green is one of the most talented young directors in the game...
  • Brian
Glad your covering this- Fantastic show. I watched the first episode 4 times, and laughed harder each viewing. Will probably watch last night's episode again tonight

McBride is on fire in this role, and the writing and direction are damned impressive.

So many quotables to throw around:
In response to the triathlete principle asking him about his training regimen. "Nah, I play a real sport, I'm not trying to be the best at exercising."

-How about Gondry directing last week's Conchords? It was sublime, and I fear he set the bar a little too high
  • Brian Rodden
Pretty damn funny. How about when he was talking about beating up the retarded kids? Mongoloids!? Hilarious.
  • Matthias Galvin
It's not It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia but it's not a bad show.
  • C-MAD
    You're right its actually better!
  • Yeah this show is really funny. The pilot episode is the only one I've watched so far because of the Oscars, I plan on watching the rerun sometime this week of the second episode. I like the show and think I will be watching it whenever I can.

Oh yeah, the whole ending scene of the pilot with Danny and the topless chick on the jet ski was the best.
  • i agree with you on the last scene in the pilot. i thought we were going to get this Greek tragedy about this guy pissing away his fortune with some great comedy thrown in, but that last scene just showed that it's going to be pure ridiculousness.
  • Yeah I really like the ridiculousness of the show. I just watched the second episode tonight on HBO and it's getting alot funnier and alot better.

The best part of the second episode was the line where he asks his friend if he was giving a blow job to RoboCop.
  • Ray Stanz
You can tell they filmed the pilot a while before the second episode. April "big cannons" looked much thinner last night. Also, I felt like Kenny was much more likable in the second episode then he was in the first.

Shows hilarious, hopefully it comes back after the 6th episode.
  • [A]
wow, someone saying there's something better than something Slumdog-related.. you're gonna lose your job, pal
  • haha
  • Ray Stanz
Also...best ine from the pliot was "I just saw two 6th graders raping a boy.....nah I'm just kidding."
  • Gavin
The pilot played out like a short film. It really needed no continuation. So funny!
  • @Aeghast

Disclosure: Ha. I didn't like Slumdog Millionaire. I have a theory that if you play MIA's "Paper Planes" during an emotional scene, white people go way too bonkers for the movie in general. There should be a scientific study. And imo, the Best Pics of 2008 were In Bruges and The Foot Fist Way but that's not a sentiment shared by my peers on the /Film staff.

P.S. While I simply didn't care for Slumdog, /Film's Brendon Connelly evidently loathes it.
  • YES! a fellow "In Brudges" fan! as much as i loved the guy-who-wrote-Milk's acceptance speech last night, i wanted that to win Original Screenplay.

that said, i did rather enjoy "Slumdog".
  • Will B
Paper planes was played over a a scene of the kids selling stuff ona train. There was nothing emotional about it.
  • Webb
I almost want hbo just to see this. Green is the man and this sounds fantastic.
  • Damn do not have HBO. Is there anywhere on-line I can watch this?
  • I enjoyed the first episode, but also felt a little let down. I am curious to see the second episode sometime this week.
  • I knew I missed something last night...but I saw the pilot and it was pretty funny, I loved it...
  • that's what i was thinking. it's damn hard to beat Philly.
  • Couldn't agree more, Always Sunny's the funniest show on television but this is getting pretty close.
  • it doesn't hurt that it's got "Flight of the Conchords" as a lead-in. that's what made me even stick around for the first episode.
  • Joe B
I love this sow. I've been following Danny Mcbride's rise to comedy godhood as this fits ery well with everything he's done if not tops it. I just hope HBO doesn't pull a Lucky Louie and end it after one season. They've been known to pull that.
  • At least that's better than loving a boar.
  • A.J.
Sounds interesting. Will Ferrell looks like a young Ric Flair in that picture above. Hilarious!
  • Mark
More not-funny sh!t that people are swearing up and down is funny.
  • Mark...the idiot who never heard of an opinion.

Here's a little lesson for you pal, comedy is subjective; anything else that involves a statement coming out of your mouth is governed by pure opinion, as well.
  • Mark
P.S.... Why am I not surprised that Hunter loves it...
  • @ Joe B

That was one helluva [sic] in your first sentence. Amazing.

    @ A.J.

    Well said.

    @Mark

I dunno, enlighten me with yr carefully placed exclamation points.

Let me add that the music selections in the 2nd episode are beyond tops, particularly the track that plays during Kenny's teeth grinding that sounds like a constipated John Carpenter score.
  • Who saw Flight of the Conchords last night on HBO? Great episode.
  • i want to see this so bad
  • Nick
I agree, the second episode elevated this show to the best on television. It was that good. I owe that all to David Gordon Green.
  • stb247
I laughed once in the pilot and I think twice in the second episode (okay, that dance was good). Not once when Will Ferrell showed up. And I love the guy. So I guess this just isn't my kind of show.

Oh, and the funniest show ever ist still Arrested Development. Nothing comes close.
  • Fartie Lange
i absolutrely loved the first episode. it was so freaking hilarious. one of the funniest things ive ever seen (tv and movie wise)i was surprised at how fast it caught on. everyone i know loved it

i was anticipating the 2nd episode like no other. but i was a little disapointed. it wasnt nearly as funny. i think Will Ferrel ruined it. none of his scenes were funny at all. they just seemed to drag on. the begining at the lake and the school dance stuff was funny, but the car dealership stuff sucked

im looking forward to the third episode but i hope its alot better
  • Eric
Im gonna have to agree man. I just watched it, and it opened up great, but the middle was really weak sauce. The idea of it was funny, but it seemed too thin. The end came together well, but in comparison to the first episode, I really don't think it was up to par. I'm a fan of the show, and I look forward to see where this character goes.
  • I know it's a comedy and all, but they're also trying to build a semi-believable show here. Not every single scene has to be gut busting funny for it to be good. I still think it was a good episode, just a little different than the first.
  • is there any legal way to watch this if you don't have HBO?
  • MNice
    IT'S NO CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
  • jason B
i think that calling the show one of the funniest ever is the definition of premature...but it is funny as fuck. it's got a long way to go yet, as we're only 2 episodes in, but i am pulling for it.

and it's nowhere near as funny as 30 rock.
  • nick
LOL this blows away 30rock MONGLOID!
  • freemachine
I've lost faith in HBO and have found myself much more impressed by Showtime original series. Long gone are the days of the great HBO flagship. I really miss Oz, Deadwood, The Wire, and Sopranos. At least HBO still has Entourage, Curb and Big Love. Showtime's Dexter, Weeds, and Brotherhood are all awesome. I even like the L-Word and Diary of a Call Girl.

If you notice, you'll see a whole bunch of former HBO contract players now acting exclusively on Showtime series. Apparently they decided to jump ship after many years at HBO (Edie Falco for instance). Now HBO is just trying to fill in the holes in their programing by importing a lot of 6 episode BBC comedies (Extras was great) to fill the spaces between all their hooker/bunnyranch reality trash. Also, HBO seems to have given up on several recent series after only one season, which shows how badly they are struggling for good material. One of their new series was filmed and then canceled before it was even aired (12 Miles of Bad Road). HBO needs to fire the people in charge of programing and hire some decent writers.

I haven't really seen much of Concords or Eastbound and Down to form an opinion. I'm afraid if I like it, HBO will just cancel it like usual.
  • Flight of the Conchords is calling it quits after this season anyway, so there is no way that it's going to be cut short. Eastbound & Down is going to be completely standalone every season, so that also isn't going to get cut short.

HBO has a bright future as far as I can tell. They're doing a show about the Oakland slums (Gentlemen of Leisure), one that involves Scorsese (Boardwalk Empire), One involving medieval fantasy (Game of Thrones), & David Simon has a few shows that might get picked up, as well.

I would probably be more enthusiastic about Showtime if they didn't accept TV shows like US of Tara to be attached to their network, but that's a different story.
