New Watchmen photo

The World Premiere of Watchmen took place a few hours ago in London’s West End and I was lucky enough to be there, on the yellow carpet, camera in hand and with Lying in the Gutters‘ Rich Johnston just to the side of me, taking pictures and asking odd questions. My video coverage of the premiere is below the break, as well my video review and more on the night’s happenings.

As many of the cast and also Dave Gibbons, the comic’s co-creator and illustrator, came by they graciously stopped a while at my little perch to answer a question or two. Things were being very professionally controlled by DDA PR, however, so there definitely wasn’t any time for idle chit-chat and it was pretty much verboten to wander off topic.

I’ve edited the good stuff from the premiere together. You’ll see Dave Gibbons, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earl Haley, Carla Gugino, Billy Crudup and Malin Akerman. They’ve got some interesting stuff to say, even when fielding the small-talk type enquiries from the other folk allowed to question them at my spot also. I was moved to fire off a text to my wife when the evening’s proceedings were done: “Billy Crudup and Carla Gugino are beautiful” - and indeed they are, as well as being red-carpet-friendly and professional to the max.

If only this whole event had not started to run behind schedule, there would have been much more scope for fuller interviews. As it is, it’s still pretty interesting stuff - particularly for fans of the comic and those among the /Film readership awaiting the film with baited breath. Which is, as far as I can tell, pretty much everybody.

The review embargo of Watchmen is just now lifted, so the video also contains the best bits (I think) from me reviewing the film in my living room. The person off camera I’m speaking to is Rachael, my wife who was extraordinarily patient to listen to almost an hour of solid discussion monologuing about one film. This has been cut down to just a few minutes here - but I think I cover the big points and should definitely give you my take on the big questions about this controversial, ambitious adaptation.

I’d like to thank WayToBlue and DDA PR for running the show so well and recognising that /Film’s readers deserve access to events like this. It was an honor being there to bring the footage back for you.

Please note that the edit of this video had to take place over minutes, not even tens of minutes, in order to get this video up online while the premiere’s after party would still be going on. There’s nothing like striking early, is there?

Okay, I won't be an asshole.

Well done Brendon, love the videos Peter. Can't wait to see it.

Great review. If you ask me the problem with Adrian goes back to the book as well. Spoilers for anyone who hasn't read it but Adrian does come out of no where towards the end. While I'm a big fan of the book (who isn't?) the ending (squid and all) really seemed rushed. But it in no way lessens the book I'd say. Just my opinion.
  • I have to say, I couldn't agree more. The ending of Watchmen is very rushed, and just the character Adrian Veidt isn't very well developed throughout. Nonetheless, it's still the greatest graphic novel I've ever read. I'm eagerly awaiting the release next Friday. Thank you Brendon for your awesome review...and yes...you have an amazing dvd collection!
  • you lucky lucky man Brendon.

thanks for bringing us the footage though.

Hats off Brendon! Fantastic review. Though I have not seen the film but have read the book several times over the last 15 years, I have always felt that Adrian Veidt/Ozymandius was a bit of an enigma and that sometimes he felt like he was not that important to the story until the last third when the wheels get really turning and Moore pulls back the covers to expose just what Veidt has been up to. Strangely, after all this time "the man with the plan" still seems like a ghost who haunts the story for the most part rather than takes part until the very last of it. I think may be that's just Moore tricking us with misdirection. I hope he is not overly underdeveloped though. Just my two cents and that IMAX midnight screening cannot get here soon enough...
  • Nice editing.
    Nice short review.
In almost all the clips I've seen of it, there is a slow-motion shot, and I also wondered about the inclusion of those. Seems to be a style over substance issue. If they took out those unnecessary slow mo shots they probably would have saved some more time and would have been able to include more of the story into the movie, which would be the better choice, in my opinion.
Though maybe the studio or Snyder wanted to include the slow-mo because of the success of 300 and its' slow motion shots. He seems like he realizes that besides making good films, the other way you get recognized as a Director, is having a unique style and/or unique trademarks in your films. He's now developing that unique visual style and trademark slow-motion.
  • Brendon is weird!! AWESOME!
  • Palmer
And people wonder why you have a negative reputation score.
  • I'm so tired of waiting. It's weird, but everything you said was pretty much what I expected. And I agree with Ben above, Adrian's character has problems in the GN as well. I'm really interested to know how the colour scheme worked though. Was it too bright?

I think this is a good opportunity to mention how great of an addition Brendon is to the /Film team. I've liked what he's done since he's joined, but this one (and not just because it's a Watchmen review) took the cake. Great Job!
  • Great video review Brendon.
  • Seconded - great review Brendon. Loved the edits and the pacing. Good stuff
  • I surprised you pulled this down in the first place. Embargo was lifted in Australia about five hours ago and I doubt we were some special exception. Good review Brendan and I agree with what you had to say about Adrian Veidt. My first reactions reviews is online now at htt://www.DarkHabits.com, co and see what I had to say before I had to do a runner for a screening. Full review to go up soon.
  • DID THEY MOTION TRACK YOUR PENIS? LOL
  • Great video Brendon! Excellent.

Also, not to hurt Peter's feelings but I much prefer Brendon on camera.
  • Esahn
    Awesome review.
  • ^^Asshole^^

Welcome to the Internet where you can insult people from a distance who are attempting to provide you a service.

    "DID THEY MOTION-TRACK YOUR PENIS?"

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! A red carpet question for the history books. Well done!
  • Well I do have midterms tomorrow but I have to watch this. Never should have set /film as the homepage.
  • You lucky, lucky bastard ; ) Awesomeness all around.
  • freemachine
Did you notice the background during Brendon's review? His house is actually constructed out of DVDs...lol!
  • I surprised you pulled this down in the first place. Embargo was lifted in Australia about five hours ago and I doubt we were some special exception. Good review Brendon and I agree with what you had to say about Adrian Veidt to a degree. My first reactions review is online now at DarkHabits.com.
  • Wow-- what a well-done video review. Kudos to Mr. Connelly. You almost prove my absurd notion that Brits have documentary-making abilities in their DNA.
  • McGruff
Dear gracious, that is a large quantity of DVDs
  • 1. Embargoes are a ridiculous business practice.
    2. Slashfilm is not under an embargo because they did not view the film at a press screener.
    3. Devin Faraci is a giant asshole.

Conclusion: Thank you for the review and I hope your site is not negatively effected. Devin can eat a fat one and if WB gives you shit hire a good lawyer.
  • jrice73
Is that Drew, the Drew McWeeney from ainitcool and hitfix. If so shame on him. Brendon was NOT invited to a press screening. He saw it at the WORLD PREMIERE for Christ's sake... WB should have never put an embargo on this thing in the first place since they need good word of mouth to sell it and make a lot of money since the court judgement.
  • Yes it is.
  • Fir3Wolf
I didn't need to see and kind of review to know this movie was going to live up to everything I hoped it would. Great review Brendon and just about a week and a half to go.
  • i feel your pain.
  • starscream9289
    "Did they motion-track your penis?"
  • i loved the whole Bob Dylan's "Times They Are A-Changin'" playing at the premiere. can't wait for this movie.
  • Wonderful review Brendon thanks for taking the time to get it up so quickly. I swear waiting for this movie is going to make the next two weeks go by terribly slow.
  • krakit
Such a great review! I like the back and forth between Brendon's
observations and the interviews with the actors. It does such a good
job at showing the contrast between someone like us outside of
the film without all the bright lights and expensive clothes who
have nothing to lose by giving our honest opinions with all the
glowing actors hyping the movie up since that's part of their job.
Obviously both Brendon and the actors enjoyed the movie, but
Brendon's honesty and intelligence stand out even more when
juxtaposed with the sound bites from the actors.
  • If you guys haven't watched the very end of the clip, please do. There's a little Easter Egg on the very subject of /Film.

Thanks for your kind words. Hopefully I'll get to do lots more of this kind of thing.
  • Thanks for the review Brendon, you have no idea how lucky you are dude..
Keep up the good video reviews.
  • Ed H.
    Well done!
  • I may be wrong, but there was only one character with super powers. That would make none of the other characters superheroes. Normal people picked up costumes an fought crimes as masked avengers. Just saying.
  • TheRedPenCorrector
I don't know about that. We all call Batman a superhero. And the Watchmen aren't just normal people. Anybody who has seen the clips will see that.
  • B33
    Read the graphic novel.
  • I refrain from calling Batman a superhero. I am pretty sure the movie didn't go into that territory either. But yeah, as B33 said read the graphic novel.
  • Thrillhouse
    Semantics.

  • Great review. Thank you Peter for having the balls to put this back up. Having an UK correspondent should pay off sometimes.

P.s. Devin and Drew are being assholes, don't let them get you down. Maybe you should forward them that list of most valuable blogs. Or the Time Top 25 Blog list.
  • Wow, I just saw the back and forth tweets... Devin is an asshole.
  • Great job, Brendon! Loved watching it and thought it was a great vid review. I hope there are more of these to come, sometimes it's nice to not have to read for a change.
You're a lucky man to have such a cool wife that would sit with you for that long while you talk about Watchmen, that seems like every nerds dream ;-)
  • well done, sir. i'd love to see more video reviews up here.
