Academy Award’s 2009 Movie Preview

sherlock holmes oscars

During the credits of the 81st Academy Awards, video clips were shown for many of the films that will hit theaters in 2009. You might have turned off the television after Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture and missed everything. Or maybe you just want to see the awesome Terminator Salvation footage or the first look at Public Enemiess again. If so, don’t worry, we have the whole 3-minute clip embedded after the jump.

The movies previewed include Sherlock Holmes, Funny People, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Public Enemies, Julie & Julia, The Soloist, Up, Fame, Terminator Salvation, 500 Days of Summer, Amelia, Whatever Works, Inglourious Basterds, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Monsters vs. Aliens, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Angels & Demons, Old Dogs, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, The Boat That Rocked, An Education, State of Play, Imagine That and G-Force.

there was some brief whatever works footage in their as well, not sure if this had been shown anywhere else yet.
  • As in whatever makes money, who cares about artistic integrety...LOL
  • I think its gonna be a good year. =)
And I'm really excited to see what "Whatever Works" is all about!
  • Those are reason enough to be excited for summer :)
  • Jon
This was the worst Oscars ever. I felt it was improper for the Academy Awards to preview films for the next year as it taints their ability to be unbiased about future nominations. Then again, when are they ever unbiased? I hate the Academy Awards. I seriously want those 4 hours of my life back! Why did I bother watching when there was absolutely nothing worth watching in it. I should have just read the results on Slashfilm.

"I felt it was improper for the Academy Awards to preview films for the next year as it taints their ability to be unbiased about future nominations."

Hahahah, I'm sorry. You think what, G-force and Night at the Museum 2 will be up for Oscars now that they previewed them? And Terminator (perhaps in the technical categories like Wanted). But come on now, lets not make ridiculous assumptions. Just because they wanted some extra revenue, I wouldn't say these silly little clips will make a lick of difference.
  • Got some good stuff coming. T4 looks awesome.
  • tom
John Travolta as criminal mastermind should be fun.
    Public Enemies looks promising.
Hillary Swank will likely to be nominated for oscar.
by the way that girl at 2:38 looks really cute

It's really just a collage of "blink and you miss it" footage.
  • yeah if you blink for more than 10 seconds.

There's a reason I come to /film for the latest info and previews of upcoming movies, and that is that television is just so unsatisfying. The trailers they air on TV are too short and I can't bear to watch ET. It really feels like scraping the bottom of the barrel to regurgitate a commercial on such a respectable website.
  • wow g-force? i cannot believe that made it as the last movie on that clip.
  • Good way to get the audiences pumped for 2009! They showed that eddie murphy movie but no mention of transformers?
  • or Watchmen or Star Trek
  • Emeryisthebestband
the academy hates michael bay apparently.... transformers special effects didnt even win an oscar they got beat out by the terrible looking The Golden compass.

    re: "Imagine That"
    Eddie Murphy: 1. Dignity: 0.
  • When I saw Eddie Murphy followed by an animated hamster, I immediately though "ANOTHER Dr. Dolittle movie?! WHY GOD WHY!?!" But then I forgot about the movie title on the bottom and was relieved.
  • I'm calling it, next year's nominees in no particular category: Sherlock Holmes, Funny People, Julie & Julia, The Soloist, Up, Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies, 500 Days of Summer, Amelia, Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, The Boat That Rocked, An Education
  • Gavin
    Where is "Bruno"?
  • 2009 is gonna be another great year!
  • Ben
I think the 10 second footage of Sherlock Holmes was cool. Or is that just me?
  • sarah
Those were really COOL 10 sec indeed!
  • thankyoufor
    PUBLIC ENEMIES!!!! that looked amazing!
  • Tony
    No mention of "9"!? Really?
  • Jim
Anyone know the band/song that was playing during the '2009 preview'?
  • sounded like Beck to me.
  • Mike C.
Beck's cover of Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat".

It's available on the War Child: Heroes compilation.
  • seems to me like you watched the 4 hour telecast so you could come on here and bitch and moan about it. you said you hate them, so why bother?
  • Jon
I thought that was the point of Slashfilm's existence? Seriously, what is wrong with you people if you thought these "pictures" were worth watching at the end? I'm pissed because I sat through 4 hours and this is the finale and breaking media they show us...an abortion of clips!
  • I think this is going to be a good year for movies. 2008 was a little meh.
  • Terminator Salvation looks freaking scary!
  • Terminator Salvation looked cool.
  • More Depp with the tommy gun please! And Terminator Salvation looked kick ass. IM surprised they didn't throw T2 or Star Trek in there but we got Eddy Murphy and a flying hamster weird.
  • Can't wait for Public Enemies!
  • Matador
is that Beck covering Bob Dylan. if so im into it. great song.
  • Same Time
Public Enemies and Terminator Salvation are gonna be awesome! Bale and Depp and more Bale. Sweet.
  • elijah
    This is neat.
Does anyone have links to the video ad's that ran during the commercials?
    Specifically The Soloist?
  • Uh oh
Great to see Hugh Jackman in there promoting Wolverine!

    Wait a tick...
