  • Jon
This was so boring! The only funny comment from the entire night was when Sean Penn called Hollywood a bunch of Commie Homo-loving sons of guns!
  • How about when James Franco messed up the name of the movie and Seth Rogan started laughing out loud, that was pretty funny.

Or when that Japanese guy who couldn't speak english ended his speech with "Arigato Mr. Robato"
  • How about when James Franco messed up the name of the movie and Seth Rogan started laughing out loud, that was pretty funny.

Or when that Japanese guy who couldn't speak english ended his speech with "Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto"
  • The James Franco thing was my personal favorite. Just because, if you know anything about him, he's actually super self conscious despite his seemingly-cocky air. So I can imagine that he felt bad and that he was just legitimately messing up and not just refusing to try and say it right. Hence Rogen laughing.
  • I thought the whole night was GREAT, this year's Oscars ceremony beat down other years, single handedly.
  • Jon
Are you f*cking serious?! Better than when Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Steve Martin, or Jon Stewart hosted the Oscars?! Seriously...best Oscars with Hugh Jackman's musical abortion?!
  • Boring? I thought Danny Boyle's Speech was wonderful. He seems like a genuine person. I did like Sean Penn's speech though.
  • Austin
Mickey Rourke rises again... & he's my brother m/, Sean the man...
  • luke_test
Where is Dustin Lance Black's speech?

It was the best one of the night, in my opinion.
  • agreed, that speech was fantastic.
  • The Oscars were very low key this year but I thought Hugh Jackman did an awesome job at hosting. Also seeing Heath Ledger’s family accept his (Best Supporting Actor) award made me feel very proud for him and his daughter who will probably appreciate it when she's a bit older. But maybe I'm being bias since I'm an Australian who will always say good things about my fellow Aussies.
  • nah, I feel the same about the speech and I'm not Aussie.
  • Thanks for the getting the heath ledger speach! i missed it
  • Kathy
Was it my imagination or did Sean Penn not mention his wife, Robin Wright Penn, in his acceptance speech?
  • stb247
Yeah... I keep looking for that in the interwebs, but it doesn't seem to be a "big" story. They seperated last year, and now she is at his side. But nor thanking Robin is just weired. I hav a feeling, they aren't really back together...
  • who cares, he's won before and I'm sure he's thanked her in a million acceptance speeches, he had more important things to talk about
  • he mentioned his best friend (the video isnt available) but it sounded like that could have been a nick name for his wife
  • Fartie Lange
    goddammit Spicoli !!!

after Ledger won, all i wanted was for Rourke to win

well u fucked that up, didnt you Spicolli

    bastard

anyone else think that the only reason Penn won was becasue of the subject matter? i.e. he played a gay guy
  • Maybe, but Penn was awesome too. Still I hoped for Rourke.
  • I agree about Penn. His performance was good, but no where near as heartfelt as Rourke.
  • I'm with you there, I wanted Rourke to win too...but Penn's performance was a pretty damn good one...
  • Did you actually watch Milk? Penn was amazing. I liked The Wrestler, but working out your own demons through a character isn't as impressive to me as completely disappearing into a role and being that character.
  • Maybe, but Penn was awesome too.
  • jason B
penn won because nobody this year came close to createing what he did. rourke's randy the ram was nowhere near as brilliant as penn's milk. if people are honest with themselves, they'll see it was no contest at all.
  • balz
god can kate winslet go away now? jesus..
  • no, I hope not. I love her.
  • sarah
I love her too, but her acceptance speeches are almost unbearable...
  • I loved her speech at the Globes (the first one) because she was so shocked to have won and almost embarrased. She is one of the true genuine talents out there, and if you don't like her, I feel sorry for you, for not seeing her how amazing she is and how she's had this award coming for a long time now.
  • I also think she is great, but wish she would not speak at the acceptance speaches.
  • Bob
You'd have thought for such a great actress that she would be able to fake sincerity and joy a lot better than she does.
  • Rourke should do her acceptance speeches too.
  • sean
    kate winslet = blowhard

jesus bitch its just a statue get the fuck over it
  • Jay Ru
Penn won because his performance was simply incredible!
  • jamz
Penn won because it was a portrayal, and the Oscars just love giving awards to portrayals and people Holocaust films. It's that simple...also slumdog is this year's crash to me. I enjoyed it, ya know just alright, when i first saw it but the hype overload makes me want to see what I missed. So I see it again and i hate it....I cannot stand Sean Penn and his over-acting. As the late Mr. Ledger once said, "I thought the award was for best acting, not most acting." Which i guess you could say the same about his Joker, but god damn does Penn go overboard sometimes, check that last scene in Mystic River with the cops holding him back for that. Also he's what people HATE about actors...at least those who get involved in politics when their own lives aren't in check...just collect your award and leave politics out of it! I thought the Oscar itself was enough of an ego boost...why'd you have to pat yourself on the back on your soapbox there Spicoli? That's right, that's all you are to me is Spicoli....when you show up on Bam Margera's TV show and let your son hang out with degenerates all day and hang out with Hugo Chavez and then turn around and try to preach to the world about equal rights? It falls on deaf ears...at least to me...
  • Was Adrian Brody a last minute replacement for someone? He kind of looked out of place with the other heavy wieghts. Plus he admitted he had to use google to find out what exactly his actor had done. What was Pacino doing that night. He does anything these days.

And why didn't Hopkins introduce Frank as they had both played Nixon. It may have been amusing to see Sir Anthony say something along the lines of "nominated for the second greatest screen portrayal of Tricky Dicky"

Another thing, wht was no one smiling when Heath won the award. Why so serious? I t was beautiful. It put a smile on my face. He won and deservedly so and his family were wonderfully sweet and humble.
  • it seemed from every other presentation that last year's winner was there, but I'm guessing Daniel Day Louis told them to bugger off, so they had to get Brody in there
  • The Oscar for Heather was one of the best things in the show. Slumpdog Milllonaire for the win. It completely deserve it.
  • I think everyone was just preparing to cry.
  • Preparing is right. I guess actors act when the cameras on. We can't blame them. We created them.
  • Dustin Lance Black's speech was the best.
  • I have to agree, James Franco and Seth Rogen was my favorite part plus you got to love Sean Penn. lol
  • The Heath Ledger acceptance was surprisingly joyous. I was expecting it to be really emotional and heart-wrenching. Kudos to the family for seeing it as the wonderful occasion it was.
  • Peter, the Sean Penn video doesn't work.
  • Go to youtube and search for "sean penn oscars". It's not that.
  • Go to youtube and search for "sean penn oscars". It's not that hard.
  • Oh I was just informing Peter that the video he had up wasn't working. But thanks for showing me that you know how to search on youtube.
  • Glad i could help.
  • Wow, I'm amuse how unreal most people are in the Oscars. I couldn't tell if they were acting or if they were being themselves. That was amazing, one of the best movies I've seen. Hold it, it was not a movie.. Oops!
  • Personally, I think the "Man On Wire" speech was the only one worthy of the title "memorable". Come on, a crazy French man makes manic speech, does a magic trick, and then balances the Oscar statue on his face? That's what I call entertainment!
"Man On Wire" is one of the best movies out last year. Very happy it won. Sadly I can't find the video of Philippe Petit anywhere. If anyone finds it, please post on this thread!
  • Definitely, the whole statue balancing on the face live in front of millions was fucking ballsy...
