MALTA/

I’ve liked each and every film by Alejandro Amenabar more than I did the previous one - and even when you rewind right back to Tesis, his debut feature, I was already digging his work plenty. You know, then, that I’m beset with anticipation for his next picture, simply on this spurious basis of a perceived inertia.

This next picture will be Agora, a historical epic and Amenabar’s second film in the English language, after The Others. Set in fourth century Alexandria, the story tells of the love of a slave, played by Max Minghella, for his master, played by Rachel Weisz. She is Hypatia, a teacher of Neoplatonist philosophy and, for the film’s purposes at least, a rather infamous atheist. The possibility of their romance is set against the uprising of Christianity and, as you’ll see from the trailer embedded below the break, the film is big-scale and stirring stuff.

If you consider it possible that a historical narrative could be spoiled, please skip to the next paragraph. Hypatia was eventually killed by members of the Coptic Orthodox Church and that makes for such drama that I think it’s likely to be used as the film’s climax.

When it came to dealing with suitors and their lustful fantasies, Hypatia had a distinctive way of being discouraging, The following comes from the Suda, a Byzantine Greek encyclopedia that recounted much history of ancient Mediterranean history:

She brought some of her female rags and threw them before him, showing him the signs of her unclean origin, and said, “You love this, O youth, and there is nothing beautiful about it.” His soul was turned away by shame and surprise at the unpleasant sight, and he was brought to his right mind.

So, she turned her potential off by chasing him with a proto-tampon, essentially. I wonder if that particular caper will make it into the film?

  • That quote was disgusting I hope its not in the movie which looks alright so far.

Looks pretty good, can't wait to see it.
  • Nice, i hope i can see it soon!

The trailer was horrific. I haven't seen something so overblown in a long time. Evoked nothing but terror at how many times I heard that cliché bass rumble as it transitioned to/from text.

That being said, I like Amenebar and this is a perfect setting to make something particularly daring. I can only hope the film itself is far less melodramatic and far more centred and balanced than that trailer made it seem. I do not want to see yet another film where the plot and characters take a backseat to pretension and overwrought attempts to appear deep. As we all know, true depth comes through the exploration of characters and their relationships to each other and to the events pushing them in the film.

At the very least the trailer left em expecting some very beautiful cinematography, though. I think we can expect some brilliant use of lighting.

Love Alejandro Amenebar and love Rachel Weisz. The trailer looks pretty epic and i can't wait to see it.
  • Sarah
    Actually, it's "Amenabar", not Amenebar.
  • Thanks for the catch
  • Looks cool. I'd like to see more.
  • interesting, waiting for more dats
  • The look of the city was impressive. Is Amenebar big on CGI? i've never seen any of his foreign flicks.
  • Max
I hope this doesn't turn out to be like Gladiator- which was a stupid movie (sorry).
  • Digbabby
I've seen most of it already and it's reallllly slow. Lots of talky talky...

Ooohhhh, she's an intellectual in a time of religion....borrrring. Too bad, cuz The Others was great.
  • I love the fact that are doing this movie because I think she has an extremely interesting life and is one of my favorite historical figures.

POSSIBLE SPOILER for those who do not know the historical background:

I wonder if they will actually show the way that they killed her because I think it will really shed some light on how certain people were treated during that time period. It will also be one of the most gory horrible things to ever put on film, but I think it is something that is an extremely important part of her life (possibly the most important part of her life).

Its in the film, the thing is, will they make cuts before its released.
  • Cathy Homes.
Saw a rough cut last month, its really good, the trailer does not do it justice.

Can't wait for it, the trailer looks very good and Rachel Weisz looks as great as ever. Love all of her work.
  • agreed. she is a great actress, and hopefully this will be another solid project she can add to her impressive filmography
  • looks good
  • Plot outline had me hooked straight away, anything to do with history in the early centuries grasps my interest and with Amenabar's record I have high hopes for this project. I've missed watching a large-scale half-decent historical epic over the last few years.
  • I feel ashamed to admit that I've never heard of Hypatia, and I had no idea there were female philosophers as far back. So cool, and the trailer looks fantastic.
  • Whew, this looks awesome, great story, great cast, great setting. I love tragedies and the tragedies surrounding Alexandria are insanely huge.
And it gives Max Minghella another job, that's always good.

  • It looks like one of those after school easter specials! Poorly edited trailer felt like it went on way to long and left me with nothing
  • rachel weissa is so beautiful. just imagine waking up next to her everyday. yum yum.

I've loved Alejandro Amenabar's work since I watched Tesis and his brilliant follow up; Open your Eyes. The Others was perhaps his weakest, yet a great atmospheric and tense horror flick. That said this looks like the typical Europen super production, extremely ambitious (at least visually) but with half the budget of Paul Blart Mall Cop. Fast editing, drum rolls and the cliche' shot of a guy raising a scroll (could have been anything really) over a crowd won't make up for Spanish actors with bad english accents, low budget CGI and washed up Old Hollywood actors . I'm hoping for the best (the guy made the Sea Inside for god's sake) but after the trailer certainly expecting the worst.

This looks spectacular and very epic. Can't wait for it to come out and i love Rachel; Weisz.

The philosopher and mathematic Hypatia, was also big form of her season with her wild murder from the patriarch of Alexandria Cyrille, became the hero of later antiquity. For this murder, the christianity still has not apologized from the humanity!
The murder of Hypatia is completely confirmed and is not suseptible of no contestation. Hopes also Amenabar it respects completely the historical sources, even if already it has fallen in the first historical inaccuracy, placing her death 25 years before!
