The Smith Family Robinson

Production Weekly were good to their tweet and this weekend’s edition is a monster. Their publication, in case you don’t know, is designed to inform craftspeople and crewfolk from the film industry  about projects that will be hiring - and, not to put too fine a point on it, result in people getting work. As a side effect, they also give the world all manner of bits and pieces of breaking film news. My heroes.

One of the most interesting notes is this bumper, super-expansive edition is their listing for The Robinsons - an adaptation of The Swiss Family Robinson designed to star Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and all three of the Smith kids - Trey, Jaden and Willow.

The PW entry reads tells us that the film will be about “a family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia”. It’s unspoken, but I suspect strongly that this will be a modern day version of the story - quite what other periods would feature an African American family taking a trip to Sydney I don’t know.

On the other hand, Production Weekly’s plot description follows the current Wikipedia introduction of the original Swiss novel  to the letter. Perhaps they’ve cut-and-pasted in error and the locations are all off.

Jonathan Mostow was once set to work with Will Smith on Tonight, He Comes which later became Peter Berg’s Hancock. Mostow then went on to work on a version of The Swiss Family Robinson which seemed to go up a side-road a while as he directed The Surrogates. Now he’s done there, and the project seems to have surfaced again, I wonder if this is the same project Mostow was toiling over. Will this bring Mostow and Smith back together? Or is this going to be Mostow free? Will there be two, competing Robinson movies?

Production Weekly don’t have the answers, listing neither a director nor any producers as yet. I’d be interested to see how it shakes out.

    This... is... bad news.

    No Will No man please!!!!!!!!!
  • He's always doing stupid remakes. Can;t he come up with something original?
  • Oh God, the other two Smith-Pinkett kids are now acting! I dread to think of all the movies/beloved franchises they'll be allowed to ruin.
  • Joe
Willow was in I Am Legend.
  • Trey's mother is not Jada. I didn't want to harp on that in the post.
  • Yeah, like say, THE KARATE KID!
  • If Jaden is in it, count me in! I see no way this movie could be bad with Jaden.
  • Matt
    Is this really happening?
First they want to make Karate Kid with Jaden, now this.
What other movies will they ruin
  • The smiths are going to be this generations partridge family or brady bunch.
  • never mind fiction.
  • Gavin
Hmm, this must be the work of Dark Lord Xenu.

This is very bad news. The Swiss Family Robinson movie needs no do-over. I cannot think of a single good reason to do this. Additionally, assuming Disney is in charge of this, this could be a serious problem for the parks.
Put a story to the Jungle Cruise of something, but don't eff up the Swiss Family Robinson.
  • Too true. Do you remember the last remake? It was just awful. Plus, am I the only one getting a little tired Mr. Smith?
  • seriously. he's supposed to be in 50 projects scheduled to be coming out.

the only one i can get mildly excited about is Oldboy.
  • filmkid
this would be Trey first movie cause Jaden and Willow already did some movies.
  • I don't see this as TERRIBLE news. Sure, I don't want a remake but hey, maybe this could be good. I'm going to hold judgment on this one till more info comes to play besides a casting possibility.
  • the casting possibility presented would be uber lame though.
  • True but the future can change all of this. Who knows, it could be good. I'm like a court system... innocent until proven guilty. When a script, screenshot, trailer or the actual film proves it's crap, then I'll believe it.

I also like how I was voted down because I having hope. :D

LOL at these haters. Will Smith is the biggest actor in Hollywood right now and brings in easily more money then anybody. Hell Hancock was bigger then most comic book adaptations. Movie goers love Will Smith. Until he produces say 3 flops after another then you can say he isn't the biggest actor. Until then, people will continue to put Smith in things that hope to make money off of.

You know, most people aren't knocking Will for his money making ability...
  • Will is due to appear in a stinker and begin a downward spiral at some point. Seems like this project is the perfect candidate.
  • Ugh, yet another worst idea ever.
  • I'll go against the minority and say this could be a good idea, I remember seeing the Disney film when I was a young nipper (yet I never read the novel) and I quite enjoyed it, so this could be another good, friendly film that the whole family, primarily the younger members, will enjoy. Also Will Smith is pretty much the 'King of Hollywood' today, so that's going to add some money to the gross and fire to the project straight away!
  • Agreed. It's all in the stars at this point.
  • Then Smith got strike one with seven pounds.
  • Good novel, and I'm I the only one excited about this? Oh, I just read the the rest of the posts, I guess I'm not.
  • one of the most memorable moments was the pirate attack as long as that is still in there in I'll be happy ....with Will and Jada, I think real couples in films usually do horribly...there are a few talented actresses that could be put in the lead female role....Naomie Harris or Thandie Newton would be a better fits

I don't mean to be obvious but isn't it going to be odd having the Smith family playing the Swiss family? considering his kids aren't trained actors along with the fact everyone hates the acting from his son Jaden...there has to be many talented child actors that could use the work...it's bad enough Jaden and Will are going ruin the karate kid...
  • Jimmy Mac
But the family isn't called Robinson!!!
  • Oh God... NO!
  • Look up "Nepotism" in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of Will Smith...
  • Brendan
dude im gonna audition for this movie
  • tom
I'm not the fist to say this, but HELL NO!
  • upset
Excuse me Brendon... are you implying that African-americans did not travel outside of America until modern day? That is ignorant BS.
