The Dark Knight Passes $1 Billion at Box Office

The Dark Knight mourns

The Dark Knight has finally done it, passing the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Christopher Nolan’s comic book sequel becomes the fourth film to ever make more than $1 billion: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest with $1.066 billion, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with $1.119 billion and Titanic with $1.842 billion. The strategically planned IMAX re release pushed the film over the $1 billion mark.

this film rules, im gonna write soo much about it in my media exam
  • good work..
  • im guessing it will overtake pirates! but it wont go anywhere near ROTK or Titanic

Given it's overwhelming success and popularity of TDK (even my parents loved it), I'm shocked that it wasn't at least nominated for more Oscars. Not like I thought it was better than Slumdog, but it was definitely better than Milk. Nolan should at least get props (nomination) for TDK.
  • it also re released here in hong kong so i will definitely keep helping it forward in the money earnings.
  • plus you didnt have a bunch of people watching titanic for free on the internet

titanic never made so much money, just like there is no recession in the world.
The media will have you beleive whatever they want you to believe-saps.
  • cheaters...
  • Even domestically The Dark Knight is nowhere near Titanic. Internationally the gap between those two movies is just enormous, because the number for Titanic is without adjustment for inflation (which is of course always necessary).
I doubt Titanic's record will be ever be broken, because:

    1) In 1997/98 there weren't so many blockbusters. Now there opens one big movie every week during the summer season. It were a whole different time back then. That's why movies burn out really fast nowadays (opening weekend accounts already for 1/3 of the total gross). And so Titanic was #1 for 15 (!) weeks while The Dark Knight was #1 for a meager 4 weeks. I think that's a pretty impressive comparison.

    2) In 1998 most people haven't even heard of DVDs nor did they own huge flat screen TVs. Without a comparable home cinema option Titanic was in the top 10 for seven consecutive months (December 97 - June 98). Such a staying power is absolutely impossible nowadays and The Dark Knight had only three months in the top 10 (July 08 - September 08).

perfect answer. plus there's no nudity in the dark knight, so that rules out the perverts.
  • Nice stats. Thanks.
  • I did my part. I saw it 5 times in IMAX and 2 times on the regular screen. If every fanboy did just as I did, then we would have beat titanic.
  • kickass.
  • Well Done TDK, you deserve it.

Ill even watch you more than Titanic, dont worry.
  • Heath Ledger was the only good thing about this film. And I believe It made so much because people were curious about his performance.
  • agreed
  • It was only a matter of time, which is something considering it is only the fifth film in cinematic history to pass the Billion Dollar mark. Christopher Nolan, take a bow.
  • It amazes me that nobody bothers to adjust the numbers for inflation. In their raw form they are nearly useless. For example Jurassic Park made 920 Mio.$ worldwide back in 1993 and that is waaay better than 1 billion dollar in 2008.
  • interesting point. not to mention how expensive movie tickets are now.
  • interesting point
  • does anyone know if dark knight was the fastest to reach a billion?
  • Bobby
TDK came out in July. It took the movie nearly 5 months for it's initial theater run to end. It took the film an additional month bacily as a re release to make a billion. So all in all the film made a billion in 6 months. So to sum it up no TDK is far from the fastest film to make a billion and the other 3 films ahead of it made their billion without having to be re released and made it in it's only theatrical run.
  • yeah. in half of a year a good handful of movies with enough blind fanboys could make that.
  • Solid
Dragonball will best it, I'm certain.
  • If any of the Twilight movies get close ill kill myself.
  • Excellent :)

This is the first billion dollar movie to have a larger gross domestically than overseas.
  • This is very unusual for every major blockbuster. It's really hard to find other instances where this happened (obviously Passion of Christ is one of the most notable cases). In the US The Dark Knight was without a doubt the most successful movie of this decade (2000 - 2009). And then in 1999 Star Wars Episode I was more successful, at least if you adjust for inflation.

But despite that, overseas The Dark Knight performed pretty unspectacular. It was outperformed by Indiana Jones IV and is far from any record breaking number. Even if you ignore inflation at least 21 movies made more money than The Dark Knight (e.g. all 5 Harry Potter, all 3 Lord of the Rings, PotC 2 & 3, Shrek 2 & 3, The Da Vinci Code, ...). Yes, internationally even Spider-Man 3 (554 Mio.$) made a lot more than The Dark Knight (468 Mio.$).

It's because most overseas territories don't believe the hype.

Besides the kind of sophomoric tone there, i have to agree bobby... In time maybe others will see the dark knight from more level headed view. There's probably entire threads dedicated to this on superherohype, but yeah realism's pretty flappin boring...
  • Bobby
lol where's all the TDK fanobys? I thought this film was going to beat Titanic but it couldn't even beat Pirates of the Carribean. I never thought for a 2nd it would even catch Titanic or get close to Return of the King which are both better movies anyways.

TDK was a great film but as said numerous times Heath Ledger's death and the marketing were the main 2 draws to the movie. If Ledger didn't die I say TDK would have topped off at maybe $600 million WW. It was so funny to me that sites like Slashfilm always like to use that whole idea that if a movie does a remake or a reamiging for a series now they say the film is getting a Nolan look or a TDK look if the film is going to be dark as if TDK was the 1st reimagining for a series or 1st remake or if it's the darkest movie ever lol.
  • Bobby
Maybe these TDK fans forgot Begins was the 1st reimagining of the series and it didn't even make more money then Hancock yet when TDK made all this money Nolan tried to make it seem as if fans really wanted a reboot for the series yet he didn't mention his 1st Batman film at all. Face it TDK was a good yet very over rated film and Spiderman 2 and X Men 2 are still overall better comic book movies then TDK. When Nolan's Batman 3 comes then if you think Nolan doesn't do another Batman film that WB will continue his path must nuts. The batman myhtology is to expansive and deep to have to skip out on characters, places or events because Nolan decided to do a semi realisctic Batman movie. Burttons films he was involved in (the 1st 2 Batman) were way darker then TDK they just weren't as realistic.

hey dude its not only about money....everyone enjoyed d film and dats important!
    Got it !
Batman begins was way better a film than hancock.
titanic's record can never be broken....I can bet on it!
so stop comparing movies on the basis of money!
    TDK got 1billion-dats good enough.
  • While it finally made 1 billion, seems it is fast running out of steam. Titanic still holds the crown.
  • Baconface
