Shrek Goes Fourth Plot Revealed?

shrek

It appears that Dreamworks have fixed an official synopsis for Shrek Goes Fourth, the next in their Shrek series and, to me at least, it seems like a fairly clever conceit to get another sequel out of a stalling franchise. This synopsis can also be read over on the Lackluster Emporium, who are carrying a link to a Copyright record for the film. Unfortunately, at time of writing, their link doesn’t work - but that’s okay, a friend who pointed me to the story in the first place was able to give me a solid route through to the Copyright record in question and I saw the synopsis there with my own two eyes.

Having played a role in the third Shrek, the character of Rumplestiltksin is absolutely instrumental to the mechanics of the fourth. No idea if he’ll still be voiced by Conrad Vernon or if they’ll bring in a big star name now the part is bigger - Tom Cruise was rumored for a role, but that was given a “not true at the moment” style denial, so who knows?

I’ll put the rather extensive, unedited and spoilery, plot breakdown I was sent right after the break.

After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing a beautiful princess and saving your in-laws’ kingdom, what’s an ogre to do? Well, if you’re Shrek, you suddenly wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What’s happened to this ogre’s roar?

Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre”, Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumplestiltskin.

Shrek suddenly finds himself in a in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.

I’ve never liked the Shrek series at all and I’m not telling you I’m gonna be falling over myself to see this installment or anything like that, but this is a neatish way of getting a reset button into a sequel and that, at the very least, is a means of giving the audience what they want on two fronts: the same thing again but also something new.

Well, providing the Dreamworkers do something new with it. I’m not holding my breath.

My favorite sequel conceits are those in Toy Story 2 and Back to the Future 2 though The Godfather 2 needs some recognition on that front too. And yes, I think they all have sequel conceits at their hearts though it isn’t exactly popular to talk about The Godfather 2 and other “serious” films in that way.

I really like the whole King Arthur thing, so the third movie was one of my favorites, how they tied in so many things from the story of King Arthur into the movie, but that's just me, I guess. I really hope to see 'Arty' in the fourth movie though, I have to say. He was a great character, and I think it would be great to have him stick around!

I've seen all three of the Shrek movies, and I thought they were all good. Personally I'm kind of looking forward to see what the next one will be like.

i loved shrek and shrek 2! shrek the third, if u really take time and watch it twice u'll learn to love it! cause i used to hate it! but know i don't:) if u watch it a second time u really feel and connect with it. in this movie i found that i really connected with arthur(artie)
  • I thought the first two were clever. I didn't see the third one, the previews reeked of desperation. This one sounds alright, I'll probably catch it on DVD.

I couldn't sit through the first Shreck movie. It seemed that they were just mining every bit of fairetale lore they could, much like Toy Story did with kid's toys. The main difference that I could see is that Toy Story was actually funny (plus I had a lot of those toys growing up).

Both Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers are heading in the same direction as Steve Martin and Chevy Chase.
  • back to the future 2 suckkkkked
  • I've seen all of the Shrek movies and I have to say that they ran out of steam after the 2nd movie. I'll see this new one with the hope that it'll be better than the 3rd movie.

I'm inclined to say "Uncle" when it comes to Shrek. #2 was the best of the series so far, but I agree with you, this plot is very clever. A little Back to the Future 2, but clever nonetheless.
  • I loved 'Shrek' and 'Shrek 2' which are probably two of my favourite teenage-years films, but I wasn't too fond of 'Shrek 3', it was ok, but it didn't feel like it emcompassed the magic of the first two films, with my Shrek life story out of the way, I'm glad to see another is being made, because hopefully it will fill the void left by the third film and we can now have a polished and finished 'Shrek Trilogy'. Which all depends on it being a good, enjoyable, family film ofcourse...

  • maybe I was to old when the shrek franchise was launched. hopefully this one will get the foul taste of shrek the 3rd out of my mouth
  • They're very good at different things but, ultimately, T2 is the better one overall.

Not so with Aliens - Alien wins out. Despite, again, them both being good at different things.
  • Totally agree about Alien Vs Aliens, although apparently we a re in the minority...
  • i HATED shrek 2, it relied too much on pop culture and current events.
  • thats the magic of shrek 2...the pop culture refrences...shrek 3 was missing that...do you realise now why shrek 3 didnt work
  • yeah, that was what made it good. nothing really sets shrek apart aside from their pop culture references.

take it away and you got a big ugly unwilling hero ogre. princess. and eddie murphy.
  • or maybe that was Shrek 3? I can't remember
  • I've never liked Shrek, either. they pretty much stole the whole pop culture shtick from ALADDIN.
  • i hardly think it qualifies as stealing.

although i do love aladdin. One of my top 3 disney films.
  • Well the premise sounds a hell of a lot better than the Third one.
  • yeah. i def don't want to see a movie about his kids. that would just suck.
  • FrannyGlass
    It's the Wizard of Oz.
  • Ben
    Shrek: One More Day
  • Paper Doll
Exactly! I KNEW that premise reminded me of something!
  • That's exactly what happened to me when I got married. I had to autograph a lot of pitchforks.
  • Can't imagine it'll be all that good - but at the very least maybe it'll give them an excuse to get John Lithgow back as Lord Faarquad. Any Lithgow presence in the film will alone make it better then that terrible last film...
  • Shrek- Very good
    Shrek 2- O.k
Shrek the Third- Died a little inside.

    speed 2......

it sounds like it has the potential to make me want to set fire to the world.
  • EightSlicesOfPie
Yeah. It could go either way.
  • EightSlicesOfPie
I loved the first movie, the second one was average, and the third kinda blew. From that description, though, it sounds like the fourth has at least the potential to be good.
  • In need of a reboot? Just take it from a sitcom of the 80s, throw in a new kid to liven the show up. Comic? Alternate reality! Funny Movie? Alternate Reality + de-balled male lead roll!
  • Andy
well at lest the musical's good!
  • I didn't laugh along with Shrek 2 like I did with the first film. Completely skipped the third and will likely do the same for this part four. It's unfortunate that they took that gem first film and ran it into the ground, squeezing for every penny. But I guess it was to be expected.

  • Other great sequels are Addams Family Values, Aliens and Terminator 2
  • Terminator 2 is WAY better than the 1st film. Even James Cameron said so himself!
  • Adams Family Values was a good sequel? :d
  • I'll agree that Adams Family Values is a good example of a sequel that builds on the original.
  • Baconface
i was really disapointed by the first Shrek

there was all this hype around it and when i saw it, i was like "thats it?"

2nd wasnt very good either and i never saw the 3rd
  • The_Kid
Interesting Idea actually, and for some odd reason I can hear Tom Cruise playing the "smooth Talking" Rumplestiltskin, I really liked the first Shrek movie, the second and third were okay., This one sounds just okay, possibly more of the same gags from the other films.
  • Palmer
No, hell no. Enough of this pop culture references meets fairy tale crap.
  • I'm with you bro. NO MORE, PLEASE!
  • Ken
Love the BTTF shout out Brendon
  • Agreed, I immediately thought Back to the Future as well which is the shit. This sounds like an interesting premise.

I only like the first 2, so I don't really care about anymore sequels.
  • yeah. shrek 2 was the best one imo.
  • I saw the Third One after liking the first two. Worst mistake i've ever made.
  • yea man they were SO different...
