Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

This morning, an e-mail about Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hit my inbox: “Please note, STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGUND OF CHUN-LI will not be screening for press.” While this added fuel onto an already considerable fire of bad buzz surrounding this film, I was still willing to hold out a modicum of hope. Neal McDonough is, after all, one of my favorite actors, and while I’m no Smallville fan, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Kristen Kreuk from my male colleagues. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak has also shown that he can do half-decent action.

Then I saw  8 clips from the film that Movieweb IGN posted. Hit the jump to see some of the clips, and for some brief thoughts.

The first thing you’ll notice about these clips is that the sound editing is absolutely terrible, making the film sound worse than a direct-to-DVD movie (Hopefully this won’t be the final mix that is used in the film, but if it is, God help them…). [Videos now display clips with finished sound]. The second thing you’ll notice is that the amount of sheer awfulness contained within these clips is enough to make Raul Julia spin in his grave.

Let’s start with this exchange between Moon Bloodgood and Chris Klein (with some McDonough fighting for good measure). While I think we can all agree that Klein puts in the performance of his career here, everything else about this scene reeks of “low-budget action porn film”:

And here’s a clip that shows the titular character kicking some ass against what are apparently some of the stupidest henchmen in movie history:

As I was watching the clips, it actually pained me to see Michael Clark Duncan subject himself to this. In fact, I don’t think anyone involved in this production will emerge unscathed. Go to IGN to check out the rest of the clips, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Discuss: Do these clips make you more or less excited for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li?

This movie is gonna suck ass!!
  • Agree. I like Kristin, but this movie is terrible.
  • She's hot, but not enough to make me see it.
  • starscream9289
Where are the sound effects when a punch or kick is thrown?

This looks like it isn't even worthy of a Razzie.
  • We should erase every film before this one, because this movie is going to set the bar for greatness.
  • I will be spending my evening with a box full of Doctor Zhivago VHS' and a magnet.
  • Acto
The sound isn't done in those clips. Go look at the same clips from IGN.

All you can ask for is a fun popcorn flick, not an Oscar contender. As far as screenings go, there's interviews that indicate that it has been screened for the press. Also, they held the premiere in Japan and I've heard nothing but surprisingly positive reaction.
  • Felipe
Yeah, seriously, MovieWeb did some fucked up shit by putting those clisp online.
IGN has finished sound they are better.
  • Fir3Wolf
...Seriously. Looks worse then that first Street Fighter movie.
  • [A]
yup, it looks bad. almost as bad as Dragonball
  • dagreenman18
not even zombie Raul Julia could save this.
  • It's definitely not of good quality but judging it as a B movie, imo it is, it's fine.
  • Solid
Ming Na is the only chun li! At least she didn't have the body of a 12 year old girl. God, why didn't Kreuk eat before filming began? If she knew anything about Li, it's that she's got enough ass to eclipse the sun. Why... oh well, back to watching two chicks fighting...
  • <3 Ming Na
  • Werd! She was the best part of Street Fighter.
  • mypersonalol
This should have been LOL of the day. You folks at /Film are just too nice.
  • Chris
I like that move she did after the head butt.....but I don't dig that guy from Walking Tall being Bison. Raul was way closer than this guy. You know, if you just compare the two actors they picked, is all.
  • Chun-Li has powerful socks.
  • it surprises me how bad this looks since justin marks adapted it
  • Have you actually seen anything written by Justin Marks? Read any of his screenplays yourself?
  • well I've watched unbroken and read his short story stranger. so what you think your the only film student who gets to read screen plays. I'm sure 80 percent of people who read film blogs were or are film students
  • joe
i seriously laughed at the bathroom scene, but thats all i've watched so far.

funny because i was playing SF4 today thinking, "they coulda made this new movie so much cooler/better looking"

I honestly feel bad for Krisitn Kreuk. You look at her in interviews and she is one of the most nicest sweetest actresses in the industry. But she has been stuck with bad projects and she gets a ton of online hate because of it. With Smallville you had nerds complaining about the character of Lana which was out of her hands and now with Street Fighter she is enduring a ton of hate for just basically taking up a role. For those that dont know Kreuk is half-dutch and 2 quarters chinese and indonesian and they are people not just commenters on the net saying she isnt "Asian enough" despite how openly she talks about proud of her heritage and how she heads up a lot of Canadian Asian art programmes in Vancouver.
Dave Chen , as a person who I've agreed with on the view of the disenfranchised Asian actor, does it annoy you, like it does me when people accuse other mixed race people of not being "enough" of another race? Im not even Asian and I find it pretty offensive. Especially considering its over something as trivial as a Street Fighter movie.
It kinda reminds of when Obama was running for president and people said he wasnt black enough because of his mixed heritage. Not that Im comparing directly Street Fighter to the President obviously.

The other thing is people keep scrutinizing her physique but at the same time , the character of Chun Li with those "thunder thighs" seems pretty non-existent. So who cares? Honestly the hate she gets measured against how she is in real life, is pretty depressing. Are fanboys that nerdy and anal? Well, Dave after seeing the wrath you got for your opinion on The Dark Knight, maybe they are lol

Honestly I just hope Kristin Kreuk can get some good roles in the future that will help develop her acting and confidence and something like Street Fighter can be quickly swept under the rug. Yeah the movie looks like its gonna suck, but what else is new. You cant make a good Street Fighter movie. Even a faithful adaptaion would be cartoony and cheesy (and fanboys spare me the argument about how great the anime movies were......they're anime movies!)

The only thing that baffles me is why Fox is releasing this movie (Whose main market is in Japan judging from the promotion its getting there, and there only) in about 2700 theatres in the US. If you're not gonna promote it why let it sink in the cinemas? It's better to just release it on DVD straightaway.

This will probably be a guilty pleasure DVD pickup when it comes out in a couple of months. But other than that, Why so serious nerds?
  • cliche in the wry
You say 'nerds' like its a derogatory thing. What we arent "enough" of a social class for you? Perhaps we take too much pride in our "geek" culture. What if the Jews took over Christmas? How about the Germans revamping our (USA) national anthem? Not that I'm comparing something so trivial to important things obviously.
  • wasabi steak
See, that rigtht there....your doing again. Getting mad over nothing

lol@" talking pride over geek culture" as opposed to...dating j/k

Nah, I just said nerd as a term. Wasnt really meant to be negative or postive.
  • Booob
she isnt going to sleep with you
  • Wasabi Steak
Well obviously but I just thought the whole online hysteria over this film is a bit retarded. Like why worry about it. Generally from what I have read, it kinda makes sense why they picked a younger less bulkier version of Chun Li. The movie looks awful no doubt and they didnt do themselves any favours by going out and promoting the flick but I just think people are kinda whining and objective over nothing.

And yes I do realize I am questioning why people whining after I made that long post at the start lol
  • Chris
    Duuuuuuuude.
  • 'You don't want a ticket to this movie, detective" "But I've never even seen a movie"

  • Me too. She needs a new agent.
  • dave
you should make a youtube video:

    "LEAVE KRISTIN KREUK ALONE!!"
  • These clips make me want to see the movie. the trailer released a month did not. this movie looks ok but I don't think it's going to be breaking any records or doing that well at the Box Office.

On a side note, Michael Clark Duncan sucks in that tone clip. His acting is horrendous.
  • Oh... my ... goodness. That sucks. That indeed unleashed a hail of spinning kicks of pure suck upon my unsuspecting aesthetic sensibilities.

And, no, she doesn't even look chinese. That's not intrinsically bad - just weird if you're portraying Chun Li.
  • I mean, she's hot and she's obviously half Asian, but I know what you're saying.
  • This film was always going to be at best an average film.
  • Jon
Somebody likes Neal McDonough. This is more surprising than the ending of The Sixth Sense.
  • Or the twist in The Village.
  • Or the entire Wicker Man movie.
  • greycolumbus
Here's another clip that you missed, Dave. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxkr4wS7XqY
  • Ryu
This is going to be the best movie ever. I suspect the bar will be set with Lesbian Vampire Killers and then reset for Street Fighter.
Seriously, are we really judging this to be a bad movie? No shi-ite, sherlock, but they know that. Street Fighter won't be winning any oscars. So long as its presented as B-movie ridiculous fun, I'll enjoy it. It's only movies that aren't SUPPOSED to be bad that actually are.
And Kristin Kreuk is stunningly beautiful, so I'll be in theaters regardless.
  • i think it's pretty lame when people argue that a movie, 'isn't winning any oscars.'

DUHHH. it's still not a justification for putting out a shitty project. just cause you don't want to reach for something spectacular, doesn't mean you should get away with putting out a piece of shit. i don't think this movie is purposely being ridiculous.

    this is a C movie.
  • afflicted
Just horrible. The fan made short of Halflife 2 that was made on $400 budget a couple days back was a billion times better than this
  • I'll lay out for everyone right here what they did wrong on this project:

    1. they made it about Chun Li

    2. they don't have ryu

    3. they didn't bring JCVD in for some major sonic ass kick(ing) action.
  • DP kid
after this what should i expect for my friend Deadpool

    FOX U RUINED DEADPOOL

    U FAIL -> Chapter 11
  • adE
geez i thought the last street fighter movie was bad!

atlease the van dam movie had the so bad it's funny factor, but this just looks bad bad bad, no this calls for as stringer word like diabolical!

good thing i wasnt looking forward to seeing this anyway
  • KFMN
This looks like shit, but I didn't expect anything else.
  • terry
why do FOX always doing crappy video game movies i dont understand. why do these video game companies letting crappy FOX do the movies???
  • money money money money money money

    money!

( i wish i could replicate the beat of the song on here, but too bad)
  • Mark
There won't be any money to earn with this project. Do you really think this movie will be successful? Imdb reports an enormous 50 Mio.$ budget. Even if audiences are dumb, they are not that dumb. I doubt that this will make more than 20 Mio.$ (it's on the same level as movies like The Spirit or Bangkok Dangerous).
