Judd Apatow’s Funny People Movie Trailer

Funny People
Universal has released the first trailer for Judd Apatow’s upcoming dramedy Funny People on Moviefone. The movie stars Adam Sandler as a famous comedian who has a near-death experience and hires/befriends and an unknown comedian/joke-writer played by Seth Rogen. You can read our previous review of the script here. The trailer gives away a lot more of the story than I thought it would, and looks very glossy for a Apatow flick. Watch the trailer (and check out new photos) after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Official plot synopsis:Over the past few years, writer/director Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up) has shown that nothing—not even losing your virginity or the miracle of childbirth—is sacred. About his third film behind the camera, he says, “I’m trying to make a very serious movie that is twice as funny as my other movies. Wish me luck!” Apatow directs Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann in Funny People, the story of a famous comedian who has a near-death experience. Adam Sandler, Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman, RZA and newcomer Aubrey Plaza join a cast that reunites Judd Apatow with Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill in their third comedy together.

  • after watching the trailer, I'm not really sure if I want to see this or not.

Download and watch the new movie Funny People http://blog-movie.com/Funny-People.html
  • Looks excellent. Thank God Apatow is sort of expanding his horizons just as his brand of comedy was about to become a very tired formula.
  • I laughed at the joke about Karl from Die Hard but I can't help but feel like that trailer really spoiled the movie.. unless the revelation that he's not dying happens in the first 15 minutes or something and then the movie goes on from there.
  • Looks pretty good. Shocked how much of the story that was given away, though.
  • not bad.
  • "The ones where you try to kill Bruce Willis"

    Okay, that was funny.
  • soundwave_17
I'm actually impressed with this. judd apatow is really finding his voice
  • Anybody else think using The Postal Service is a little cheap? It looks like Eric Bana is gonna be pretty funny. Also I, like dureggersc, am wondering why so much plot was revealed.
  • rnl
    I'm a fan, I'm in.
    Looks great.
  • It looks like another balancing act by Apatow, but with no annoying Katherine Heigl, I'm sold.
  • Ray Stanz
I bet he finds out he might live, then turns his life around gets back with his old girl, then dies at the end.
  • It happens like the first 45 minutes or so.
  • natcho
This looks painful. Isn't the plot of this movie, comedian bombs but other more famous comedian sees the greatness in the comedian who bombed and hires them, a ripoff of the worst episode of Studio 60. This looks bad, like laughs few and far between and melodrama cranked to 11.

SPOILER: The theme is, Adam Sandler will find what he was really for in the end - home.
  • Dylan
It is a lot more serious than I thought it was going to be, but I'm liking it. I can't wait.
  • Is it just me, or does this look like really depressing?
  • seth rogen looks skinnier?
  • also, it looks like Jonah Hill has dropped some weight, or maybe i'm just saying that because i caught "Accepted" on Comedy Central the other night and he was huge in that one.
  • I actually thought Jonah looked bigger. thats probably because...well I don't know why, he just does.
  • ElectricSheep
Video is working for me. Says its temporarily unavailable. Or is that just AOL's way of saying this is only for the United States?
  • ElectricSheep
    NOT working rather.
  • Ok follow me on this now: What we all hoped Tropic Thunder might be (The Self deprecating flick showing that Ben Stiller realizes he's a tool), this might actually turn into that for Adam Sandler. But instead of action flicks it's actually Judd's films and he's poking fun at himself.... Am I explaining that in the right way? That was my First reaction anyway.

This actually looks a lot better than I had imagined it would. A little melodramatic sure, but I doubt Mr. Apatow will allow his movie to dive over the complete deep end.

Oh, and Eric Bana...huh. How bout that.
  • Looks like a good summer time chill kinda movie...
  • Second on that front.
  • Most Trailers seem to do that now adays. If people don't know EXACTLY what's going on in the movie, then they won't watch it is the mentality I get from trailers now.
  • While he was shooting this, he was in the middle of training for The Green Hornet. In interviews he said he was puking his guts out with the exercise his trainer was making him do.
  • LittleJ
Yeah, and i read the script and it didn't have them hiking in it. And now they're hiking in the trailer. I'm pretty sure Apatow added that cause Rogen was probably getting skinnier as shooting went on
  • It seems like he put in all that effort for nothing now, you know, since Green Hornet might not be happening.
  • I would follow Apatow into hell if he was directing films there, at least I would laugh a lot.
  • I think you would have to pass through a candle and make it flicker.
  • At least it doesn't have Rogen as a lovable loser that gets to bang some hot chick. And Sandler has been getting better on dramatic roles (See "Reign Over Me").
Thumbs up to Apatow for attempting to make a new film instead of re-booting, re-imagining or doing a sequel.
  • Looks pretty good, but like others have said, the trailer gives away just about everything. I imagine Sandler's character makes Rogen his apprentice, wins back the girl who got away, and that's how it ends. I hope there's more to it than that though.
  • Looks good. Apatow is good at balancing comedy with drama and Adam Sandler was really good in Punch Drunk Love. I hope it doesn't fall apart in the third act like 40 year old virgin.
  • I do want to see this movie. I wish I'd read the comments before I watched the trailer. I hate it when they show that much of the plot in the trailer. The people that make trailers seem to completely misunderstand their purpose.
  • first of all. I J***ed for this movie__second. Judd apatow is Tarantino now, with this "Third Film" stuff LOL
  • first of all. I J***ed for this movie
second. Judd apatow is Tarantino now, with this "Third Film" stuff LOL
  • Except He's been making these movies once every 2 years or so, and Tarantino takes eons to do the same.
  • excellent
  • trailers always give away too much
  • Jimmy
Well good thing Judd Apatow movies are 3 hours long, so 45 minutes in is good ;-)
  • Showed too much, I feel like I just saw the whole movie minus the last 10 minutes.
  • jobless
to those who think they gave too much of the plot away. i do not think that judd apatows movies are about the plot twists. 40 year old virgin and knocked up titles gave the whole story away. people will go see these movies because they are funny, which is judd apatows forte. if you want a compelling narrative go watch the watchmen motion comics
  • I agree who would have thought his film about comedians would have the most emotional resonance. This is completely different from what I expected out of this movie..........although they should have left out the last mint or so of the trailer it really spoils it.
  • GORT
Judd Apatow please learn something from J.J Abrams about not spoiling your entire fucking movie.
  • Flax
You talking about the Cloverfield trailer where they showed...nothing, or the Star Trek trailer where they showed everything yet you still know what's going to happen because it's a prequel.

Granted, the plot was exposed too much in the trailer, but it looks a lot funnier than I thought.
  • /filmluvsjudd
looks gooood. i don't mind it shows the story. it didn't give us all the laughs. jonah hill and schwartzmann got like 1 line in this trailer but they're in a lot of the shots.
  • when has apatow ever done one of those kinds of projects anyway?
  • Apatow has pretty much made 50% of the new IPs in the last few years.
  • nicely said.
