1978 Battlestar Galactica Big Screen Movie?

battlestar classic

IGN is reporting a rumor that Universal Pictures is planning to turn the old Battlestar Galactica television series (1978-80) into a feature film. Series creator Glen A. Larson will be working on the script and is also expected the produce.

I’m not sure I understand the concept of making a Battlestar movie based on the old television shows as the recent Sci-Fi channel series is basically an updated version of the original series. I could understand releasing a movie about the original Cylon war, or some kind of prequel, but I just don’t understand what an old school Battlestar movie would bring to the table. Will Starbuck be played by a man again?

  • It seems kind of silly, since the show still airing has a following. For the record, I just spent the past month catching up on the series. It is excellent, minus 2nd season finale, and the beginning of the 3rd season.
  • Thats hollywood looking for easy money with minimal work... its like a remake without the work
  • I use to love the old Battle Star Galatica event that was apart of the Universal backlot Tour back in the 1980s. It was my favorite part of the tour. You were stopped by two cylons in a tank and then escorted into the Cylon base, "You have wandered into a Cylon Battle Zone. You are now our prisoners, do not attempt to excape! Move forward immediatly or we will blast you!" Once inside the station a laser battle ensued between the Cylons and the Colonial Warriors. I was awesome! I wish it was still there even as dated as it is.

Leave it to Peter Sciretta to blast the original series. It's pathetic to hear that everyone seems to think that the re-imagined, and I stress "reimagined," that we have morons who seem to think that Sci Fi's Battlestar Galactica is the only BG series out there. The original series is still adorned by fans all over the world and I still prefer the original series over the "reimagined" series. I look forward to seeing a new movie and I think it's pathetic that the writer for this article, Peter Sciretta, seems to think that the original series does not exist and that the new series is the official one that fans should follow. The Sci Fi Channel series is just a bastardized version of the original series.
  • This seems rather pointless to me.
  • That's where I quit watching.
  • Konrad
This is akin to making a sequel to the Stargate Movie.
Just no, there's no point. You can't continue that story line. There was an episode of olde BSG where they had to let... *GASP* WOMEN FLY THE SHIPS!!! It's just not going to work.
Keep selling the DVD's but please, take a lesson from Galactica 1980, just leave it be.
  • 5 bucks Richard Hatch had something to do with this.
  • What's wrong with the Second Season Finale?
  • A.J
Yeah, what's wrong with the 2nd season finale? When they settle on New Caprica and the Cylons take over? That was fine!
  • Lame. I love the TV series so much. Seeing the "original Cylon War" that is hinted to in the series would be really cool. Otherwise...this sounds like a horrible idea.
  • It is worth it to stick with the series, because it does return to form.
  • I wouldn't stay it returned to form but it's definitely one of the best shows on TV currently.
  • I hope so.

Ralph McQuarrie's original ship and character designs for the original tv show still look better than the crap you see in the new show. I'd rather have them build-off of that look and style and see that made into a well-made sci-fi film.
  • Weyland_Yutani
ahh... exactly. I quite like the new show, but besides the name, I don't particularly associate the two versions. I love the original designs and the classic cylons. If it were done right, I'd be in line.
  • Drew
originals were redone quire well in BSG Razor
  • Legs
greatest moment of the entire series.
  • I don't want to go into spoilers, but the writers must have drank too much. They took a slow building character building story, and jumped to something very different. It did get back after a bit, but the scars are there.
  • oh my god, not again. I've had it with Transformers, and now this?
  • nah, Michael Bay.
  • Have you seen 6 because she seems like a well crafted cylon model.
  • That was great. One of my favorite parts of the original tours at Universal.
  • the people who do the current show don't have the rights to do a theatrical movie. that's why.
  • ha!
  • bonnor
Quite simply a really bad idea.
  • soundwave_17
they would have to go in knowing that most people who know the series only know it from the new one than went back and found out how great the original one is
  • I'm not blasting the original series. I just don't understand doing a movie in this post Ronald Moore BSG world? What could a movie version of the old battlestar bring to the table that Moore's hasn't already done in a modernized more topical way?
  • ...and better.
  • I couldn't agree more. It was extremely jarring. And I don't see how the show could've gotten better unless they find a time machine, or some how wish those events away, but if you say so.
  • I think they did it beautifully with the whole 1 year later fade. And the way the story progressed, it actually made sense, sort of having you see how much people change in 1 year, in an instant, as if all was forgotten (the quest for earth).
  • I think they did it beautifully with the whole 1 year later fade. And the way the story progressed, it actually made sense, sort of having you see how much people change in 1 year, in an instant, as if all was forgotten (the quest for earth). And then the cylons landing caught them off guard, and it caught US as viewers off guard because we too were forgetting everything.
  • Uhuh, and how much did Sci-FI pay you to say that? Or wait, Ronald Moore? Is that you? J/K ; ) I get where your coming from. Maybe I'll go back and watch.
  • Its all about that cash money...
  • Well they don't go back in time, but they do move on about 3 episodes in. You are left with the aftermath of that situation for virtually the remainder of the show until now.
  • at least the creator is invovled
  • BSG is a great show. I have absolutely no problems with the second season finale, either then when it happened or now when what happened actually ties up the rest of the story.

Hatch and nothing to do with this. Glen A. Larson holds the rights to the movie version of BSG…as well as a few other of his properties such as Knight Rider. Even though Larson is accredited on the new series as a consultant he had very little to do with it……. It seems to me that old Larson is in need of some cash and wants to cash in on the BSG ticket after the series ends this spring. Though I liked both new and old,m I would prefer the new series going to the big screen then the old

The way I see it is that Ron Moore's version stands on its own as good science fiction but it's not what I would call the only version. Peter keeps saying that why do a movie based on the old version when Ron Moore's version exists.

Everyone keeps assuming that movies or new television series based on the old series should not be produced. However, this logic is faulty. There are a lot of people who still love the original series over the new series as Ron Moore took the concept and didn't just make changes to the surface structure of the series but drastically altered the entire dynamic.
  • The Commodore
Why should a new movie be made based on the original series? Because they are still legions of fans who appreciate the original series and while the newer series may have a following it just doesn't have that long term staying power that the original series will always have. It's why other shows such as Buck Rogers, Incredible Hulk, Bewitched, Wonder Woman, Gilligan's Island, Flipper, etc. It's original entertainment and remakes, reinvisioned shows, updated versions of shows based on the original versions of those shows will always have that extended staying power and why remakes will never maintain that extended staying power.

Also, the new movie is mostly through the actions of Glenn Larson and Universal Studios. The new movie would never have been given the green light without it being approved by Universal, which obviously liked the idea so don't blame Richard Hatch, although it may seem that Universal may be trying to turn Battlestar Galactica into a new sci fi movie franchise based on the original series.
  • Mecline
Speaking of faulty logic, stating a show doesn't have the "staying power" of its original incarnation while the series is still airing seems incredibly hasty, especially for a show that has garnered such widespread acclaim.
  • You spoke for me. Also Commodore, might nostalgia be clouding your judgment?
  • Legs
    is that you Richard?
  • ThanosPrime
HAHA!! Its funny you mentioned Buck Rodgers.... ITS NOT ORIGINAL! Buster Crabbe in the late 30's and early 40's did serial films, heck, the character was acctually introduced in 1928. NOT a Larson original, nor are Wonder Woman (DC), or The Incredible Hulk (Marvel). These could be called "reimagined" as well based on the writers ideas of character development. Ill admit I loved the original BSG when I was 10, I also loved the A-Team (I would be thrilled to see a reimagined movie of that) But would I watch it if I could see a modern, more realistic, for grown-ups, makes-you-think, dirty, gritty show, that the "good guys" dont alwasy win (or at times who the good guys are), or a campy feel good, "we won the day! Its Disneyland time"? No. Im sorry but I have left the past, im not 10 anymore, I have a Atari 2600 in a box somewhere, and a Xbox 360 hooked to my HDTV LCD with surround. By the way, there are rumors that a new Buck Rodgers will be coming in 2010..... I cant wait to see the outrage about that. I hope Ron Moore will work on that as well. HEHEHEHE......
  • The Commodore
The new series has a definite ending and I think we might see the movie series being developed based on the plotlines started by Richard Hatch with Apollo as the Commander of the Fleet.

Besides, last I checked, it worked for Star Trek: TOS (6 movies), The Next Generation (4 movies), etc.
  • David Simmons
You can get a movie based on the original series on DVD right now if you want. It functions the same way the new mini-series. I like the old show for it's bright and silly disco-cheesiness, but the new show is far more interesting for me character-wise and story-wise. It definitely has its flaws, but I think it will age much better.
  • Palmer
Man, what a way to mind fuck with the fans. We go from original 70s, some 80s version , the re -imagined version, Caprica, now we go back to DISCO!
  • Terry Lee
Yeah...I'd prefer a big screen prequel to the new series.
  • Other than the name, they are seperate entities. There was talk for years about doing a movie to conclude the saga. It might work better as a TV Movie.
  • 790
Yeah that Universal Studios attraction was great. I remember that one. The Cylons would split in half when they were shot.

    Ah the memories.
  • Yea it does seem as if this project is aiming backwards somewhat. I'm not an avid viewer of 'Battlestar Galactica', but catch it on television when I can and think the more recent series would make great properties for a big screen adaption (and also make a lot more sense).
