Is Mickey Rourke Still in Iron Man 2?

rourke iron man 2

I’m not sure what to believe anymore. Last month the Hollywood trade papers broke the news that Mickey Rourke was in talks to play the villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2. Then earlier this week Rourke said that he’s “not doing Iron Man 2″. Could it be that Marvel didn’t offer him enough money? In January it was reported that Marvel’s starting offer to Rourke was $250,000, which is extremely low by any account.

But now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that it isn’t over yet and that an “offer still stands, though nothing’s yet being negotiated.” And ReelTalk has a supposedly new interview with Rourke (although, I’m not sure when it was taped as there is no datestamp) where he now insists that he would “love to be in Iron Man 2″, that “it’s a possibility” and that Marvel “needs to do road work”, although I’m not quite sure I know what that means.

Rourke is known for his uncensored comments. Last month he announced on the red carpet that he would be appearing at WrestleMania. His rep later did damage control insisting that it would not happen, but now it’s being said that Rourke is still strongly considering the possibility. I think the bottom line is you never know with Rourke, which is one of the reasons Darren Aronofsky had such a hard time getting funding for a film with Mickey attached.

  • I would want more money too if I were Mickey. He's about to be a big movie star again and is going to be worth the price. Marvel needs to quit dicking around and sign that guy and start production or this will be in development hell for the next decade. If that happens, were talking reboot in 2016.
  • WTF they won't get him cause of money? Stingy ass Marvel...
  • I hate reading about this story, yet i keep coming back to it. Do i care ?

if i was mickey rourkes agent i would advise him not to accept any offers until he (probably) receives the oscar. his fee would automatically jack up by a good amount as a best actor winner. i'm pretty sure that in his full quote he says something like 'as of right now we're not doing ironman.' so this just adds to my theory that he is waiting for a better offer which will probably come after the academy awards
  • Any bet he'll make up his mind in the last minute.
  • it would be nice to actually know the truth about what is going on one of these days. are u coming to iron man 2 or not????
  • Well he has gone on record to say that he would love to do the movie but it must be Marvel and their financial backing. If anything he could be holding out for more money after the Oscars.
  • I think you're absolutely right, which begs the question, why hasn't Marvel learned their lesson yet and paid the people who are making them millions!?

I agree, somebody is telling him to stall things until after Oscar night, simple as that, money, pull etc

As for Wrestlemania, well, it's likely the same person who told him that it wasn't a good idea, but again, Oscar night might be the decider.
  • the money is the problem

Rourke is a human yo-yo, he's doing the same thing with Sin City 2 saying that he's in it one week and disagreeing with himself the next week. Maybe the drugs did his mind in completely..

how bout noone report on this until it's finalized.

    back AWAY from the keyboard!
  • This is a simple equation, surely? If he ends up being cast in Iron Man 2, the studio made the right offer. If not, they didn't.
  • it's all about the benjamins.
  • I really think Rourke's back-forth about Iron Man 2 is simply about a bigger pay day, similar to how Fav used the press to get one before he officially signed on. If he wins the Oscar, then Marvel will have to offer more or it won't happen.

And I think Rourke will keep ties with Wrestlemania/WWE for quite a while, especially if the Oscar doesn't happen. It builds his fanbase and keeps him the public eye, if not necessarily in the geek/critic eye. It also keeps the (easy) money rolling in for the time being. By starring in The Expendables and reteaming with Walter Hill, Rourke has a new career path in mind far outside of prestige pics like The Wrestler. The WWE will not hinder that, the opposite.
  • He was never not completely doing it. The quote from a couple days back stated "right now" which to me is negotiation-speak for "until the make a better offer."

  • i respect his talent, but could care less for him on this project.

Samuel L Jackson. don't lose him. marvel f*ckheads.
  • he was huge prior to his falling out. he didn't come out of nowhere, he just came out of the 80s

Why ruin Iron Man 2 with rourke. I dont know what the big is with this guy just cause he comes out of no where and does the one good movie doesn't make him a good acter. the guy is a loser and a bum and doesnt deserve to be in a film like iron man 2. Mickey rourke is garbage and should go into hiding while he still have some dignity after getting an award before he messes up his intire career agian.
