thor

A casting notice for the lead role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor not only tells us that the position is still vacant, but what criteria will be applied in selecting the big screen God of Thunder. Coming Attractions have been slipped the following definition of a Marvelous Norseman and plenty of people aren’t going to like it:

Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.

Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severely humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature hero of our film.

Some controversial points there, not least that they’re looking for a 20 something. It might just be that I’m getting old, but it feels to me like 20 somethings are, in reality, the new teens while to the studios and casting agencies, they’re being used as the new 30 somethings.

I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense in an origin story that the lead hasn’t really lived much yet, but I think most people’s immediate conception of Thor is not necessarily compatible with that. Simply put, I think folk typically conceive of gods as being older. And there must be a modicum of outrage due when Kevin McKidd, for sometime now a fanboy fave for the role and definitely a choice I could quite easily see working out, appears to have been kicked to the curb in favour of a younger demo. This does have a whiff of Internet upset about it, but I bet it’s quickly overshadowed by the inevitable casting of a youngster as He-Man in the Masters of the Universe movie. Just a hunch.

The arc of Thor being “genuinely and severely humbled” is interesting, and perhaps indicates why the casting skews younger- but it still wasn’t necessary. People of all ages can and regularly do need to be humbled, of course, and definitely on some kind of mythical scale 30 something can still be played out as small fry.

On the other hand, when it ultimately comes to selling our 20 something hammerman as having matured, the narrative should do all of the work - Thor will have undergone the maturing process before our eyes, and therefore we’ll hopefully buy into it.

The emphasis on a “charming wit” wasn’t quite what I would have predicted. Egotistical, yes; petulant, yes; wild, yes; witty, not so much. Despite inevitable protestations that I’m reading too much into it, I really think there are some telling indicators of the production’s trajectory woven into this casting notice.

Standing somebody who is taller than six feet next to the typical Hollywood leading man truly would create a giant. I hope they do cast short for the other parts.

Now… bring on the casting details for Loki.

  • I don't know why they don't just this guy...

Today's Hollywood 20 yr olds look like teenagers. That's why they routinely play them in all the movies. Thanks to better dieting, skin care products and other Hollywood magic, their 30 yr olds look like 20 yr olds. Casting so young is a huge mistake.

A lot has changed in a short period of time looks-wise. A decade ago, casting a mid 20's guy as an adult made since. Those guys looked like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon. Today they look like Shia LaBeouf, who can and does still play teenagers. The Hollywood spa culture has skewed age perceptions. Ashton Kutcher is in his 30s.
  • Q??
I notice they don't say anything about blond hair or blue eyes. I guess they can fix that with bleach and contact lenses, but still you'd think they would say something. Would it upset you if they cast some dark haired or dark eyed guy?
  • 20 something can go all the way up to 27 or 28. Don't forget, Christopher Reeve was 25 when he landed the part of Superman. Let's not let Brandon Routh ruin it for all the other guys in their 20's who can actually act.
  • LOL. Too true.

But remember, Reeve got cast over 30 years ago. It's just like with Mel Gibson. Those guys looked more mature back then.

Because that is Vincent D'Onofrio... Have you seen him on Law and Order lately?

Yeah, I was really pulling for Kevin McKid. But, I suppose that even though he's my pick for hope with Captain America, they could use Alan Ritchson to be Thor! He'd fit the part and fit everything that they have in the casting call
  • [A]
you read way too much latinoreview
  • [A]
got a bit old, didn't you? I read about it two days ago. two.
  • I thought Brandon Routh did a great job as Superman in Superman Returns. That movie didn't work because of the script.

20 something for Thor doesn't sound right in my ears. I had hoped for 40 something, at least.
  • JazzMan
so i guess a asian can play Thor then cause its in a fantasy world then plus alot of white actors are playing asian characters so why not have an asian play a white character LOL
  • Tim Drake
Maybe they want to cast young because they are casting a god who ages over millennia and not decades. So when Thor 2 or Avengers 2 comes out like 10 years from now, Thor will still look relatively young.

I hope they cast Captain America young too. After all, he was young man when he was frozen at the end of WW2.
  • filmkid
if they cast people like Zac Efron, OC kids or etc i will not watch it. also this does not make sense with a 20 something actor for Thor movie. the reason why cause if they doing The Avengers movie the actor whos going to play Thor will look out of place next to actors like Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle, Edward Norton (if his coming back) these guys are in 30s - 40 +.
  • Could go either way to be honest, it could be a great decision establishing an actor as 'Thor' for years to come, or it could completely wreck the project and the fanboys expectations, with the recent backlashes against anything and everything not being perfect in some-form of an adaption, I'd go for the latter myself...
  • /filmluvsthor
agreed. Routh was one of my fav parts.
  • Routh may suck according to Latinoreview but it doesn't matter anymore. The Superman reboot is years away and Routh will be in his mid 30s. So Latinoreview "wins" and will get their younger recast. So what? It doesn't make that site any "hipper" for getting its way.
  • I see nothin' wrong with this casting call.... hopefully great and comics-loving minds are behind the casting itself tho! *hope springs eternal*

Oh, and please make it a hot, hot man. Crucial.
  • And here was me hoping for Mickey Rourke to be leaving Iron Man to lead Thor. I said that as a joke but in my head thats a damn good film.
  • jason B
seeing as how RDJ is ironman, jackman is logan, norton is banner, bale is wayne, and macguire is peter p...wait, tell me again how " 20 somethings are, in reality, the new teens while to the studios and casting agencies, they’re being used as the new 30 somethings."

none of our tentpole stars - whose films both matter and succeed - are under 30...so is this just a 'stir up internet gossip' topic?
  • jason B
oh, and i left out the entire cast of watchmen.
  • bring in new blood. routh was a no make before he became superman. brannagh is a great director - marvel got very lucky. lets hope ther;es a cool villain too ;--)
  • This casting notice sounds more like a dating ad, lol.
  • filmkid
HAHAHAHA thats so true it does sound like a dating ad cant stop laugh now because you pointed that out lol
  • damn that's right
  • I think the description is due to his potential reaction with humanity. He may be looking at them like,"I'm a God, what the hell is you guys problem?"
  • Zab
Routh may be a nobody but does that mean EVERY superhero must now be cast by nobodies? Downey Jr wasn't a nobody. Bale wasn't a nobody. What about Smith's Hancock? Even Toby Maguire wasn't a complete nobody before Spiderman. And their movies all made a pretty good chunk of change. Using nobodies is just an excuse for studios to be cheap. Lots of times the best person for the role isn't a nobody and studios just need to pay for it. They'll make the money back at the box office.
  • Actually, I never go to latinoreview.

Slashfilm seems to do just fine for movie news. And all without announcing any specific ethnic preference.
  • "HE ALSO HAS TO BE WHITE, BLONDE AND BLUE-EYED."
  • yeah, I've noticed this, too.
  • And everybody's looking back with, "Well, this is the modern world. Nobody really believes in Norse mythology anymore, dude."
  • Hence the wittiness.
  • MCA
Is it okay not to really care about Thor at all? It can't just be me right?
  • Dr. Doc
check out the J. Michael Strazinsky and Olivier Coipel run, its very very good

i absolutely despised Thor before i read this. I hated his costume and everything about him

now im not obsessed w/ Thor or anything, but i definately think hes alot cooler than i used to, it makes the prospect of a movie a little more exciting
  • Care to repeat that number again? I'd also love to hear where you read it two (yes TWO) days ago when the story was broken last night by Coming Attractions.
  • not just you.
  • sean p
Thor is a horrible character that will never translate to film. His costume is suited only for a gay pride parade. He would be sitting next to Captain America on the float.
  • 1. You guys find really weird reasons to like or dislike something. And really weird reasons to worry or not be worried about things. (Especially you Brendon.)

    2. This honestly seems like a joke. I mean, how crazy would it be if Branagh just wanted to throw us off, or freak us out or something? Crazy right? In any event, trust the man. He's delivered a long line of solid films.
  • Has Connelly even ever read a Thor comic? "Egotistical, yes; petulant, yes; wild, yes; witty, not so much." WTF, damn right Thor is witty! Thor is known for his comebacks, especially when others have debated his legacy. Stark and Thor go back and forth with witty verbal attacks all the time in the Avengers and that's just the Avengers. If you get into his comics, wit is definately one of the major character points in his character.

As for the twenty-something bit...Dr. Donald Blake (Thor's alter ego) is very young looking. But I agree, I felt Kevin McKidd was a perfect fit. Honestly though, if Branagh wasn't feeling it, I will side with him. Kenneth Branagh is a true talent and with him in the director chair, we are sure to get a top notch film.
  • Hot Sex on a Friday
    Kevin McKidd is Thor!
  • No way bro! Thor is awesome and can easily translate to film. That's like saying Lord of the Rings won't work on the big screen? As far as his look, have you even read Mark Millar's The Ulimates? Thor's look in those books is anything but gay.
  • Here here, STRACZYNSKI is the shit and his work on Thor has been very impressive. Not sure his book would translate to film all that well, but he definately has done some great work with revamping Thor's character.
  • sean p
    Thor is totally gay.

    1. long hair. gay
    2. winged helmet. gay
    3. tights. gay.
    4. Norwegian. super gay
    5. red cape. gay
    6. carries hammer. gay butch.

the list goes on. Thor is a poor man's Hercules and will never be a good film. Mark Millar only writes stuff that will be sold for a film. He made his character from wanted look like Eminem because he was hot at the time. Gay.

    Mark Millar.... gay.
  • People likening this casting call to some sort of resignation that they want to cast Zac Efron or something is stupid.

"Mid-to-late 20s, over 6 feet tall." That cuts out like 60% of Hollywood and all the people whom Thor fans would not want to see. Stop all this sensationalized reactionary news and commenting based on a few sentences.

The casting call for The Hulk reboot didn't say "30s, thin, very slender male". Whoever works the best for Branagh and his crew is who is going to get the gig.

Calm the fuck down, for Thor's sake.
  • someone's a homophobe....so worried about gay.
  • sean p
I'm gay ,too. That's how I know what to look for. Thor would fit right in with me and my friends. The question is,as a Thor fan, would you?
  • Yeah Rourke would make an interesting Thor...
  • filmkid
if you complaining about Thor is gay that mean you got to complain about all the comicbooks characters been gay too. you need to grow up and stop been homophobic unless you trying to hide your own personal issue that you are gay.
  • Nothing to see here folks. Everyone please return to your regularly scheduled programming.
  • Schofizzy
if your gay why are you complaining about him being gay? seriously...
  • sean p
I've already said that I'm gay. pay attention. and yes, most superheroes are gay,as well. that's why i like them and i'm assuming that's your reason.
