Are you way behind on your movie watching? The Oscars are approaching faster than you think. In case you hadn’t realized, they’re on this Sunday. Still haven’t seen Milk, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, or Slumdog Millionaire? Not doing anything this Saturday? Well then, you’re in luck. If you have $30 bucks to spare, you can catch every single one of these films in a row, starting with Milk at 10:30am, all the way up to Frost/Nixon at 9:45pm. It boils down to almost 11 complete hours of film time, and AMC is tossing in a large popcorn with free refills all day to boot. Plus you’ll be able to come and go as you please… like during the last hour or so of Benjamin Button.

Over 97 different AMC theaters across the U.S. are participating in this showcase, and you can check on their website to see if this is happening near you. While it might not be all three Lord of the Rings movies in a row (which is almost as long with those extended editions), it’s still a pretty serious way to geek out on some quality movies. Just make sure you eat your weight in popcorn to really squeeze some extra value out of your thirty bucks. That’s what I’m planning on doing (I’ll be at the one in Anaheim), and now I just have to figure out how to smuggle in a tank full of soda.

  • Wouldn't do it. Although I want to see Frost/Nixon, my friends say The Reader is a rental and I couldn't sit through all of Benjamin Button again without skipping the overlong introduction and epilogue. But I would happily pay to see Slumdog and Milk on the big screen again.
  • Your friends must not like movies because The Reader is worth watching in theaters. And if you were really bored with Ben Button, you could go do something else until the next movie started. I said it down below, 30 bucks for these movies is a great deal.

I did this in 2007, it was a really cool experience, plus they give you free popcorn and soda refills

i've watched Benjamin button and i must say it was a 3 hours love story, the character of brad pitt was interesting and the movie was mediocre, i tried to watch slamdog millionere two times but both i got bored after 20 minutes, i mean really, why is all the fuss about??/
  • Correction: You will be at the one in Orange, since The Block AMC 30 is in the city of Orange not Anaheim
  • I definitely think The Reader is good enough to see in theaters. I liked it a lot better than I expected to. But I guess your friends probably have similar movie tastes as you do, so I guess following their lead is probably good in your case. Just know that there are people that really like it. It's not like Ben Button, where most people agree with what's wrong with it.
  • I'd totally do this but I doubt that there is a theater around me that is an AMC...stupid Iowa. I wish I was home.

I'm glad that you referenced Lord of the Rings. I just watched all three extended editions with three friends of mine this past summer. It took us a whole day, from the late afternoon to the late afternoon the next day (but with sleep and food breaks in the middle). The mere fact that I have three other friends that are wiling to sit through that much with me shows how nerdy we all are.
  • Kevin try a Camel back water system, they hold a more than a half gallon.
  • I did that when the final extended edition of the films came out. My best friend and I marathon through them in one day. We took about 15 minutes between each of the discs and got done within the day, the sun was not in existence that day.

Swarley, I thought I was the only one from Iowa who was a movie nerd! I live in LA now, but I am from around the Council Bluffs/ Omaha metro area.

They allow you to bring in outside food to this, so you shouldn't have a problem. I went last year, it went by surprisingly quickly. Hopefully this year's group will flow as well, although I'm definitely more reluctant.
  • there is one at downtown disney. 12 theaters.

    i live in Anaheim =)
  • i wouldn't fill them with soda though.

i've had a friend fill one with wine before.....it forever stinks now.
  • Wine can be tricky, I would use a cap full of bleach and let it soak for a day. That's how I would clean them when I was mtn bike racer.
  • there is one at downtown disney. 12 theaters. although, it looks like only the one at the block is showing it.

    i live in Anaheim =)
  • Hmm...I have nothing to do this Saturday. Anyone going to the West Nyack, NY showing?
  • anywhere near mo?
  • I'm actually from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but I'm just here for school.
Coming from a highly urban area with a ton of movie and culture buffs, it's definitely a big change to be in such a small city that hardly has any indie flicks playing.

Oh and also, I think I've watched the extended editions and the special features with them like a million times. That's just a rough estimate. I frequently reference jokes from the commentary or the documentary footage on the extended disks, but no one other than my best friend ever gets what I'm saying.
  • cant wait to do this. i'll be at the frisco tx showing
  • Better_Than_You
It keeps talking about viewing the best pictures of the year, but I don't see "The Wrestler," "The Dark Knight" and "Wall-E" listed anywhere.
  • wow that's a lot of time at the movies...
  • if wall-e wanted best picture they should have never created best animated picture
  • Better_Than_You
    I agree.
  • and with the exception of the reader i agree with the list. put in either the wrestler or dark knight in its place and i think theyve got the top five for once this year
  • Been wanting to go for years, but this is the first time I hadn't already seen 3 or more Best Picture nominees. It'll be a great experience.
  • Welp, guess I'll be at the Burbank Town Center all day. Freakin' amazing deal. $6 a movie plus the popcorn and drinks all day. Wow. I'm actually really excited.
  • Reniassance_Man
I'm psyched too, though I don't think it includes drinks with the price. It'd be awesome if it did though.
  • Kevin Kelly
The Reader is FANTASTIC... and ranks only below Slumdog in this list for me. Seriously, it's a great movie.
  • Kevin Kelly
Whoops, you're right. I always forget to credit Orange for being a city, and it's actually The City of Orange. Crazy.
  • Wife and I are going, figure if we could get the G-parents to watch our crazy 2 and 4 year olds, might as well marathon all the films.

This way I can watch what the /filmcastis always picking apart or griping about.
  • Dan
I will be at the Grapevine Mills AMC in Grapevine, TX. Really looking forward to working out my butt in sitting for 11 hours. That came out weirder than I had hoped.

    Anyway, go movies!
  • i was at the one at stonebriar
  • Bored at Slumdog? Do you have no soul? jk...
  • $30 for these 5 movies isn't a bad price. I would definitely do this if I hadn't already watched them.
  • As I have sunday off work, I will be travelling to my local cinema twenty miles away and watching 'The Reader' and 'Frost/Nixon' (missed first 20mins) again for free (I have a cinema card which allows me to see as many films as I like for only £11/$22 a month). Mind I would love to do something like what the AMC is doing, spending a whole day simply watching films and chilling out sounds like the life for me!
  • well... after sitting through 4 movies and a change of schedule the management came out to say that the print of Slumdog had been damaged and we wouldnt get to see it. did this happen to anybody else?
  • Ouch. Oh man. I'm sorry, you missed the best one hands down. Where the rest were bogged down with a lot of self-importance the two that stood out were Milk and Slumdog Millionaire. They both had more life and spirit in their first twenty minutes then the rest of the movies combined. Slumdog though really shined through in the way that it told a fantastic story, built up the tension to boiling point, and brought so much passion to the table. The life it brings to the screen, That's the reason Slumdog should and will win tomorrow night.

I'm so sorry you missed it. Demand your money back or a free showing, that's inexcusable from the theater.
  • it was pretty douchey of them. luckily i had already seen slumdog at totally agree with your analysis. milk and slumdog are the top 2 of the year. they did give us a free ticket for today to see any movie, but for 7 years i have been going to this theatre to see my blockbuster movies, and for the first time in seven years they "dropped" the reel. pretty freaking douchey.
