Remember that report that showed up on AICN last week claiming that The Wachowski Brothers had been offered a reboot of Superman? Sorry to get you guys all excited but I have just gotten confirmation from two independent sources that the report was completely false. I don’t know if an interview with James McTeigue actually aired on RTL1 or not (I’m guessing not) but The Wachowski Brothers have definitely never had any talks with DC or Warner Bros to helm a Superman film. This is confirmed.

  • well then..
  • Thank God!
  • Sista H
Funny how /film is debunking a story like they have creditabilty. Please give a break
  • Keith
Didn't Drew debunk this on HitFix already?
  • not to be a negative nancy, but i'm not interested in seeing a superman reboot.
  • Yay!
  • Mandy
Sad news. The Superman franchise desperately needs a total Superman Begins reboot after the debacle of the last movie. New cast, new beginning, new villians, new everything. Where is Superman's Christopher Nolan?
  • Don't be a douche. Theres really no need for your aggressiveness.

Regardless of your stance on /film's credibility, they said "This is confirmed." Not "we confirm" or "we are reporting," so if you have an issue with the "creditability" of this report think up a better way of stating it.

Oh, who are we supposed to give this break to? You didn't specify, you can't just randomly tell us to give a break and leave us hanging with the recipient.
  • /ambient
I'm sorry. The Wachowski Brothers were a tad upgrade over Brian Singer, but there's better filmmakers who should attempt Superman.
  • Peter how was it debunked? Who confirmed that it was false? Thats kind of to bad actually. Though I would rather see Singer do a sequel, the idea of the Wachowskis doing a Superman movie was cool I thought. I love The Matrix, I can even say I liked Reloaded though yes it was disappointing, I didn't like Revolutions, but Speed Racer was so much fun. I really hope the Wachowskis do a Superhero movie, Plastic Man would be cool.
  • Solid
Debacle? If Superman Returns was a debacle, I want every movie to emulate it from now on. Come on internet, just because Dark Knight was good doesn't mean Singer's movie is any less poignant and all the other big words for super awesome. :(
  • Mcfly
I'm not sure why some of these fans would have believed that WB would give the keys to their flashiest car to two directors who just crashed and burned with Speed Racer?

McWeeny at Hit Fix did debunk this a couple days ago, but that doesn't mean that Peter didn't check it out with his sources and also here it was false. Good to hear actually.
  • Me either. Lets give it eh, 10 more years before i even have to think about Superman again.

Lets just stick with the next Batman, DC comics. GO.
  • /filmluvssupes
pheeeewwwwwww. they just weren't right i think.
  • hmm
Not sure the Wachowskis were the right directors but a totally clean slate is the way to go, so that part was promising.
  • Yeah, I totally missed McWeeney's mention of it in one of his link posts (as it appears most everyone did, as I didn't see any rumor correction posts anywhere, and even AICN hasn't posted a debunk notice). I can say I have confirmed this independently with two sources, so that now makes three sources - the rumor is 100% false.
  • Jeff L
Larry Wachowski needs to reboot his wardrobe. The 'sexually-abused 5 year old' look is SO not cool.
  • sigh
Maybe no one is capable of doing a good Superman movie. He could be too boring for modern audiences. Just let the character rest until some new director figures out a new angle like Nolan did.
  • Another webmaster of a high profile site told me that it was absolute bull. I'm glad it was false, those two doing Superman at this point made no sense to me. I don't see it as an upgrade over Singer and that is what they need.
  • looks like AICN messed up big time.. I wonder how much trouble they would get in by using such false rumors
  • Why so much hate for the Wachowskis?!? Isn't The Matrix one of the coolest movies ever?!?
  • I have to agree with Mandy. Superman was pretty disappointing and seemed to be just go through the steps. Also the actor playing superman was disappointing and seemed like a lame attempt to replicate the success of christopher reeves and the past superman movies.
  • They pretty much said it was a rumor from the start didn't they? ie, take it with a grain of salt. I could see WB wanting these two before Speed Racer, but after Speed Racer? No way. These two were basically locked away in Germany spending WB's money. Doesn't make sense that they would go from Singer doing Superman to opening the checkbooks for this duo.

    *crickets chirping*
  • AHahHA, Come ON! They made the Fucking Matrix!
  • Dr. Doc
    OH THANK GOD!!!

i dont mind them doing Plastic Man, just keep them the hell away from Superman

WB, hire Geoff Johns to write you a Superman reboot trilogy! just freaking do it already! you didnt give him The Flash, dont drop the ball twice!
  • I don't think Johns would actually write the script, after seeing that Smallville episode I certainly don't want him to. That being said I could see him fleshing out a treatment and getting a story credit and consulting title. Bring in some polished screenwriters to solidify the story.
  • filmkid
i am glad they aint doing it but Superman does needa reboot and they need to give superman a different type of outfit
  • The only change that Superman's suit needs to feature to set it apart from Returns is classic all the way. Whether it is a reboot, requel, quasi-sequel, origin, reorigin or whatever the heck you want to call it just pull it from the comics and call it a day.
  • filmkid
i agree to follow the comicbooks but his outfit should be changed like how they did for all of them Batman movie make Superman outfit different
  • I heard the Christopher Nolan was writing a script for this, and in talks to possibly direct.
  • I'm really glad for that!!!
  • Anti-Septic
To be perfectly honest, I am sick of Batman movies also. Come on DC Comics, Superman and Batman are not the only comic book characters you have. I am a huge DC fan but year in and out I shake my head at the blind faith you show these two characters.

DC Comics, please give me a fantastic Green Lantern movie and show the same dedication towards the character as you have with the Bat and no one will even remember the Dark Knight afterwards. You cannot tell me that a good Green Lantern movie wouldn't easily outdo these two characters just for the simple fact it would be a fresh movie experience for movie-goers! That and the fact that Hal Jordon is one of the most awesome and compelling characters in the DC Universe!

    Hal Jordon rules!
  • It is Jordan, not Jordon.

And for the most part, I think you're blaming the wrong company. DC does not make their own movies. Warner Brothers owns DC, therefore they are the ones that handle the movie side of DC characters.

And on another note, I do not think that any other character in the DC Universe can outsell, neither Superman or Batman. This is of course assuming that people that goes to movie follow the same comic book trends. The best selling books of DC are for the most part Action Comics and Batman, with their respective counter parts, Superman and Detective Comics. Which are Superman and Batman books.

To be fair though, if I'm not mistaken, Green Lantern is the hot item of the moment. And the main event of this year for DC is GL related. The Blackest Night.

But I have to make a clarification regarding that. This has nothing to do with the character, it is the writer who should be recognized for such a magnificent work. Geoff Johns is by far one of, if not the best writer that DC has right now. Everything he touches becomes gold. He can take the least selling or the least appealing DC character and make it so good that it can become the best seller and the most appealing, at least for as long as he's writing it. So if it wasn't for Geoff Johns, Hal Jordan would probably be dead and the idea of a movie would probably not exist. Which means, that Superman and Batman, would still be the best selling books.
  • I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.
  • bob
thank god, that might have been the death of the franchise
  • naters
well....i loved SR. i agree that it wasnt all that i had hoped for....but lets not be too disappoined....a sequel following singers idea could still be great. the biggest mistake would be to totally start over....just move forward. no matter what the topic is.....not everyone is going to be satisfied....thats just the way it is in the real world.
  • I guess we can always have that memory that we thought was true for the last two weeks. Oh well, I guess they can try to get someone better than those Wachowski Brothers.
  • I'm not either but it's not up to us is it? I wish they would continue the franchise after Superman Returns but I guess they're going in a different direction.
  • yeah. i didn't have any problems with Superman Returns. it wasn't a great movie, but i didn't think it was a terrible movie. a bit long if my memory serves me correctly.
  • Yes, but it's not the real world, it's the world of cinema, and starting over can be just what a franchise needs sometimes. Like this time. Reboot Superman.
  • Seriously why so much hate for The Wachowskis?!? They made the fucking Matrix! Doesn't anyone remember the first time they saw that getting that feeling like there fucking head was going to explode?!? Also yes The Matrix sequels were disappointing. But come on you cannot say those aren't technical achievements and you saw things in those movies that you never saw before. I for one actually think Reloaded is pretty good, despite narrative problems, that movie was a kick ass action movie with thought provoking questions... Then Revolutions didn't answer many if those questions, but it had enough cool sequences to make it worth while. Also Speed Racer was fun! I just dont get why so many people think this is such bad news, they aren't Brett Ratner, there the fuckers who created The Matrix.
  • starscream9289
Seriously, What the Hell is wrong with Superman Returns?

So he had a kid with lois, big whoop! Wanna fight about it?
  • gah
Peter, I've been noticing a trend in false rumors. They all seem to be coming from foreign radio interviews that never happened.
  • Yeah I don't get why people complained about that. I mean sure him being a Super Kid was a WTF moment, but I thought that was a nit pick blown out of proportion. Also people complaining about Superman having a hard time catching a plane and an easy time lifting a Krater. I just don't get that argument. I mean how did he have a hard time with the plane, he never complained, I mean its fucking Superman and if he knows his strength and he just cant stop a plane like that and have nobody get hurt. Also the krater was standing still and he ended up getting hurt. Or people complaining about Superman going to hospital. In all honesty I think thats what people would have done if they found Superman unconscious. I think people bitch about stupid stuff in Returns because they find it funny and popular. I have a lot of problems with Returns- Kate Bossworth, draggy at times, and we have seen that Luthor scheme before... I can imagine if you dislike the movie because of reasons like that, but yeah people have generally just blown nit-picks out of proportion.
  • yeah, it's all blown out of proportions. NOt only that, but fanboys are the most unforgiving people on earth. Thank God they don't get out too often.
  • I feel the same way.. I really digg Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and was hoping for him to have another crack at it but unfort that's not gonna happen :(
  • I guess you spoke a little too soon. It's crazy how fast news about a movie can change within a few days.

If you didn't know, /Film broke the news that it's going to be a reboot after all, it's going to be a sequel to "Returns" with hopefully Singer still attached to it.
  • Legendary Pictures removed the Superman Unleashed section from their website :(
  • Yeah that's only because it went public which is something they didn't want. Actually I really don't know why they removed it because it really wasn't password protected like this article said. Anyone could view it as long as they were registered to the Legendary Pictures site.
