This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

CHANGELING
While the reviews weren’t necessarily negative, the Clint Eastwood-directed Changeling opened to a surprisingly middling response, apparently falling prey to silliness and convention far too often. It was enough, however, to earn Angelina Jolie a nomination for Best Actress, despite claims by many critics that her performance detracted from the film more than enhanced it. To that I simply say, “…I WANT MY SON BACK!!”
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: 2 featurettes (Partners in Crime: Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie, The Common Thread: Angelina Jolie Becomes Christine Collins).

RELIGULOUS
A flawed but thoroughly engaging and entertaining examination of religions across the globe, Religulous is much more successful as a comedy than it is a documentary. With the final moments culminating in an ultimatum of sorts for the abolition of religion, it’s clear that Bill Maher was intending to do a lot more than provide atheists with an hour and a half of hearty chuckles, but with the blatantly deceptive editing and deliberately ignorant interviewee selection, the movie fails to adequately balance humor and insight.

Notable Extras: Commentary with Bill Maher and director Larry Charles, and deleted scenes/monologues from around the world.

QUARANTINE
I’m amazed this movie got as decent reviews as it did. I remember seeing the trailer before its release and thinking it looked laughably bad. Granted, I may have been biased against it, since it’s a hugely unnecessary Hollywood remake coming out only a couple of years after the highly praised Spanish original (entitled [Rec]), and it stars Jennifer Carpenter, who I’ve come to loathe after enduring season after season of her as the annoying sister in Dexter. But it looks like I may have been wrong about this one, so I’ll check out in the next couple of weeks and report back with my thoughts on the /Filmcast.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Commentary with writer/director John Erick Dowdle and writer/producer Drew Dowdle, and 3 featurettes (Locked In: The Making-of Quarantine, Anatomy of a Stunt, Dressing the Infected: Make-Up Design).

THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN
I wonder if this movie would’ve been more successful if it didn’t have a title better suited for a lousy porno. The story (adapted from the short story by Clive Barker) is certainly interesting enough, following a struggling photographer who’s looking to capture a darker side of humanity and subsequently finds himself on the path of a serial killer, and the reviews have been very positive. Considering all the word of mouth I’ve heard about the project, I can almost guarantee this one will go down as a cult classic.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A making-of featurette, a World of Clive Barker featurette, and a Mahogany’s Bag feature.

FLASH OF GENIUS
This classic David-and-Goliath tale has a man (played by Greg Kinnear) battling it out with a major corporation who stole his idea for the intermittent windshield wiper. If the subject matter sounds a little dry, it’s because it is. But even though you may have seen this type of story many times before (and done a lot better), it’s still said to be a satisfactory entry in the genre.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Commentary with director Marc Abraham, and deleted scenes.

DEAD LIKE ME: LIFE AFTER DEATH
As a devoted fan of Showtime’s now-cancelled Dead Like Me series (which follows a teenage girl who dies and becomes a grim reaper), I feel both excitement and skepticism towards this straight-to-DVD follow-up movie. On the one hand, the show never received the ending it deserved, and this movie could be a great way to tie up loose ends. On the other hand, the absence of actor Mandy Patinkin cannot be ignored, as he was one of the main highlights of the original show. It could go either way, really. I’ll be checking out the movie this week and report back with my thoughts on next week’s /Filmcast.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Audio commentary from Ellen Muth and director Stephen Herek, and a “Back From The Dead: Resurrecting Dead Like Me” featurette.

BODY OF LIES
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
I saw this movie little over four months ago and already I’m struggling to remember anything about it. If it weren’t for the strong performances by actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and Mark Strong, there would be absolutely no reason to see it. It’s an espionage thriller that as conventional as it is uninvolving. We’ve come to expect so much better from Ridley Scott.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc has no extras. The two disc includes an audio commentary with director Ridley Scott, screenwriter William Monahan, and author David Ignatius, an “Actionable Intelligence: Deconstructing Body of Lies” documentary, deleted scenes, and a digital copy of the film.

HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND ALIENATE PEOPLE
As sad as it is to say, Simon Pegg’s first foray into mainstream Hollywood cinema wasn’t nearly as successful as Ricky Gervais’, both financially and critically; and considering that Ghost Town basically bombed at the box office, that’s really saying something. There was so much potential for a great satire here, but despite Pegg’s best efforts, it’s a mostly unfunny and sitcom-ish affair.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Audio commentaries with director Robert Weide and star Simon Pegg, and a making of featurette.

CHOKE
If you’ve never read Chuck Palahniuk’s excellent book, then it’s very possible that you’ll find a lot of enjoyment in Choke. For those who have though, watching the film is a constant struggle of trying to figure out why somebody with such a poor grasp on the source material would go to so much effort to have it adapted for the big screen. If you’re interested in hearing a more in-depth discussion of the film, check out this episode of the /Filmcast.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: An audio commentary with writer/director Clark Gregg and Sam Rockwell, 5 deleted scenes, a conversation with Clark Gregg and Chuck Palahniuk, featurettes (My Name is Victor and I’m a Sex Addict, A Mother’s Love, From the Los Angeles Film Festival, Fox Movie Channel Presents: Casting Session), and a gag reel.

HOUNDDOG
There are some things in life I simply have no interest in seeing; a movie in which Dakota Fanning gets raped is one of them. Perhaps a scene like this could be justified if it was an essential part of a greater whole, but the reviews make it fairly clear that this is not the case. Pass.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Extended Edition)
Call me crazy, but if we ever face the apocalypse, I firmly believe the High School Musical series will have played a major part in it. Even if it doesn’t though, it’s still an awful franchise, as is everything that’s originated from the Disney Channel in the past five or so years. If I ever have kids, I’m going to make sure that channel is blocked, so they never have to endure its insufferable attempts to dumb down today’s youths.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc release will include the theatrical cut of the film, along with a Cast Goodbyes featurette. The 2-disc will include an extended cut of the film, as well as a Sing Along Feature, deleted scenes, featurettes (Cast Goodbyes, It’s All in the Dress, Night of Nights), bloopers, and a digital copy of the film.

Body of Lies should at least in rent it, its is 20x times better than QUARANTINE.
  • I want to rent BODY OF LIES, HOUNDDOG, CHOKE and THE MEAT FACTORY. already saw Changeling in the cinema, it was okay. Not Jolie's best performance, though.
  • just wanted to warn you: don't watch choke with high expectations. It will let you down.
  • Good, someone else who can't stand Jennifer Carpenter. We stopped watching after the 2nd season because of her. Couldn't take it anymore.
  • Wow, what a lot of shitty movies this week. Choke is good though, disregard Adam on that one.
  • Have you read the book?
  • I don't get all the positve reactions to Midnight Meat Train really shitty CGI and the actress who played the girlfiend was horrendous. Quarantine was alright it's like if Blare Witch and Cloverfield had a baby but it gets a little silly toward the end. Oh and people should see Changeling blu-ray if only for the surpurb cinematophy.
  • Bengoshi-San
"and it stars Jennifer Carpenter, who I’ve come to loathe after enduring season after season of her as the annoying sister in Dexter."

Really? Wow, credentials right down the drain for that one bro. Jennifer Carpenter is a great actress and she's meant to be very slightly annoying on Dexter. Her character is more about trying to be a strong woman who has very realistic weaknesses when it comes to men. But I think I speak for most true Dexter fans when I say that we don't find her annoying to the point where we don't want to see her act or to the point where we "loathe" her.

Aman, you should watch "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", I think she does a wonderful portrayal of a girl haunted/possessed/spooked to death. That was her first performance I ever saw and have been impressed with her acting chops since.
  • Amen!! She was great in "The Exorcism..." and is amazing in Dexter!
  • No "BUY IT" recommendation in 2 weeks? Is the industry really in that bad a shape?
  • jason B
PLEASE DON'T BE TURNED OFF BY THIS REVIEWER!!!! deborah morgan is perfectly depicted in SHO's dexter. the books/dexter himself/the show wouldn't be the same without her, and carpenter is wonderful in the role. don't take either of our words for it - i urge you to check it out yourself, it's one of the 4 best shows on television. the cast really makes this show fun!
  • How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is very underrated
  • Midnight Meat train had potential, but fudged it up with really laughable cgi, and a silly ending.

    Choke should be a rental.

How to lose friends and Alienate People is where it needs to be.
  • So true! Dexter is one of the best TV show around and Carpentier is a big part of the reason why! I also kinda liked Quarantine! I wasn't dissapointed!
  • I watched it yesterday... well I tried anyway. I stopped after an hour. I really didn't get into it... and I NEVER stop a movie before the end!!
  • frank
No offense, but maybe you should actually WATCH the movies before reviewing them, just a thought...
  • adam, i watched the movie a few days ago (how i got it lets just keep that on the hush-hush lol) and while i thought it was pretty good, as you said, the absence of favorite Mandy Patinkin, definitely leaves it feeling empty (they replaced him with the guy who plays desmond on lost). overall i thought the story seemed like it came to a decent close, though i would have preferred more closure on other characters.

that said, id say check it out - if you like it, you like it; if you don't, you don't.
  • maybe you should actually read the whole piece
  • dagreenman18
im still angry ghost Town bombed. that movie was gold.

Choke was odd but decent, Quarentine is a good remake of a superior film, and i enjoyed Religulous.

i never heard of Midnight Meat Train so i ignored it when we recived the DVD at work. ill give it a shot if it's decent.
  • Wow!
    Someone didnt have a childhood....LoL!

but its understanble if we're talking about HSM!
  • andrew aiello
both simon pegg and teh director said skip the dvd of "how to alienate people" they said they worked really hard to make sure the addtional stuff they shot would make it on the DVD(since they thought that teh extra stuffed somehow made up for teh crap theactrical cut) and the guys who put the DVD together either forgot or said fuck it and the studio didn't give a shit. So yeah....

I also saw midnight meat train in theaters. I actually read teh short story a long time ago and it struck me as a pretty cool little storyu but yeah the trailer looked f'n terrible. But the movie itself is indeed a good horror movie, plenty fo intrgue gore and suspense plus you get to see ted raimi evicerated. so I know bruce campbell wants to see it.
  • God, could any more boring DVDs come out? March 10th CANNOT come soon enough...
  • Dr. Doc
i always thought that the chick from Dead Like Me was very attractive...
  • I don't recall seeing any reviews in this article...
  • Yeah but Leslie Bibb is hot as shit and she was decent so she was fine in my book. I found the movie entertaining and quite good until the last 10 minutes where I thought it became kind of laughable. I just got Choke, Changeling, and How to Lose friends from Netflix. Also was Ghost Town a flop?!? I remember it not being a success but I think calling it a bomb is going a bit over board. Also Religious is pretty good, its just like Bill Maher's show- one sided but funny.
  • I'm surprised nobody has said congratulations on this column being mentioned in Time magazine. Anyway, congratulations!
  • Lono
    re:Jennifer Carpenter

Me too! The entire supporting cast for that show (Dexter) was...lacking.
  • No one likes Jennifer Carpenter. NO ONE.

Also, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 is the abomination you probably think it is. That spot is reserved for TWILIGHT. At least Zac Efron dances.
  • Jon
Body of Lies was a great film that gave a great portrayal of the war on terror better than Syriana IMO!
  • Dan
Couldn't agree more about MEAT TRAIN. I love Leslie Bibb and Bradley Cooper but they need to steer clear of horror. I might end up renting this just to see what I missed on FearNet's unbelievably dark, almost unwatchable, non-HD version.
  • Joe
I read Choke last May, drove half-an-hour to see Choke in the one theater near me actually playing it, and wholly enjoyed it. It's worth a rental, at least.

Oh, and one more thing: Poodle.
  • So true! Dexter is one of the best TV show around and Carpentier is a big part of the reason why! I also kinda liked Quarantine! I wasn't disappointed!
  • reading a book shouldn't be a prerequisite to watching a film. NEVER EVER EVER.

i hope that's not what you were inferring.
  • second straight week with no DVD's in the buy-it section.

it's like all the crappy films of the summer wanted to avoid sharing the release dates with good films.
  • tmille30
you are so right about choke. It was such a terrible movie. I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the book, but i had no idea it was going to be that bad. The book was amazing, one of my favorites, but this movie sucked big time.
  • Not at all. Read my write-up of the DVD, that's why I was asking.
  • There hasn't been a buy it movie in a while but i'll be getting Changeling for my wife.
  • Nop I didn't.
