Into every generation, and apparently every nation, one is born. A schoolgirl who will take up arms against the pale and pasty undead. The US got Buffy Summers, while Mamoru Oshii and Hiroyuki Kitakubo gave young Saya to the Japanese.

Her debut was in the 45-minute anime Blood: The Last Vampire which, while being very visually accomplished and quite alluring aesthetically, seemed rather hollow. It played more like an episode of an already running narrative, or a particularly elliptical pilot. Below the break I’ll put the trailer, so you can judge how this latest run at the project plays.

There have already been very many spin-offs and side narratives that draw upon the original, including a reboot TV series called Blood+, a few video games, a Manga series and novels. Clearly, there’s something about a schoolgirl laying it down on bloodsuckers that really strikes a chord with people - and it sounds like a harmonious chord rings out every timea checked skirt comes out of the wardrobe. Blood plays a certain kind of geek like a piano.

I recognised the majority of the images in the trailer from the animated source but was pleased with how they were realised. It looks stylised, possibly even stage-bound, but fluid and polished. I’ve only seen one of Chris Nahon’s previous features - EuropaCorp’s intermittently splendid Kiss of the Dragon - but that suggested he can handle this kind of material with relative ease.

Of course, it’s all seems a bit lukewarm if you do compare it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but that’s true of most things.

I can’t see a US release date for Blood on the horizon, but according to The Anime News Network, the Japanese launch is set for May 29th, and we in the UK will get our shot on June 12.

  • I've been waiting for this for over a year....I'm glad to see progress finally! French director Chris Nahon, who previously made Kiss of The Dragon and Empire of The Wolves is one of my favorite French genre directors...the clip is too short to give an idea of what the overall movie will be like but it looks good so far...although all the stills released online gave away the ending which was disappointing....it will be the first of the R anime adaptations hopefully this one will set the bar for Akira, Ghost In The Shell and Ninja Scroll...
  • trailer looks nice, has a lot of energy to it. I did like the original anime, but i don't think it's worth doing a live action remake of it. my fear is that since there's a japanese live action, if's that successful then there could be an american live action remake, which just shouldn't be allowed.

i would prefer if they did a live action of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. A way better anime and has amazing action and a decent story, even by vampire lore standards.
  • Oh shit. I just saw that posted up on Trailer Addict about an hour ago. It actually looks really cool. Not sure if they are going to execute it well, but I'm going to remain hopeful.

I remember Ronnie Yu was attatched to direct a movie a few years ago. Anything still going on with that?
  • There's something about Asian schoolgirls wielding samurai swords and a various assortment of weapons in near-to-impossible situations, that always perks up my attention slightly... :D
  • I actually thought it would be a cool idea to have Terry Gilliam direct a Bloodlust adaptation with Johnny Depp as D....

this looks good how comes hollywood studios cant make trailers like this
  • because hollywood spends too much time listening to market research and rarely produce a decent trailer.

only exceptions i can think of are auteur directors like nolan, cameron, Snyder, del toro, jackson
  • dannyboy
    i guess you are right
  • hmm interesting.

if it was made by gilliam, at least there wouldn't be a dependence on CGI and he would use more physical effects to achieve his vision
  • This is that film. He never directed it in the end.
  • You know I like that idea.
  • if you liked that what about Tarantino directing an adaptation of Golgo 13....or Taylor and Mark Neveldine directing a hard R version of Big Guy & Rusty The Boy Robot....I could go on..lol

  • Gilliam isn't a stranger to CGI...Brothers Grimm had many computer effects
  • true. actually i think someone like Guillermo Del Toro would be better.
he has shown how amazing R-rated or 18's rated (on my side of the pond) can be with Pan's Labyrinth
  • yeah but he's busy as hell for the next 14 years...I'd rather him direct Hellboy 3 and his other projects...
  • me too
  • I'll stick with Gilliam and Depp.
  • Seem's interesting I just hope that it has substance and not just show a bunch of action scene's strung together which is what the original movie seemed like.
  • I have to say I wasn't a huge fan of the anime. But this, while it's not nearly enough to really tell, at least looks initially interesting.
  • I guess if you're aware of the anime this might look enticing... but to someone out of the loop, all I saw was a girl jumping around and 'looking cool' in some cut action scenes. Had I not read the /F post, I would know nothing of the story. As it happens I did read it, and I'm still not interested in seeing this.
  • kickass.
  • hot chick fighting. that's always good. i'm there!
  • it has such a fresh look to it. i'm really digging the japanese look to a tired concept.
  • I hope it turns out good.
  • The animated pilot, which many seem to think is a movie, was very satisfying. I heard and have been waiting for this. I hope its good.
  • What is with the japanese and their school girls?
