akira bluray

I love my 2001 tin-case DVD release of Akira, but since word hit the street that the film was getting a high-definition Bluray restoration I’ve been aching to learn how it was going to be improved. A recent post over at Blu-ray.com sheds some light on this highly anticipated release, and thankfully, it sounds like we’re getting more than just a higher-resolution version of the 2001 Akira release.

From the site:

Even though AKIRA had major restoration work done for the 2001 DVD release, including a 1080p theatrical quality master, advances in digital restoration and film transfer technologies have increased to the point where a brand new transfer was warranted. As with the audio, a new inter-positive was struck from the original film negative for a new scan into a digital intermediate (DI); the master computer file upon which all of the remastering work was performed.

Apparently, the Blu-ray release is also getting an uncompressed PCM 192Khz/24bit 5.1 audio track as well (which in layman’s terms means it’s totally sick), which was developed by the film’s composer, Shoji Yamashiro. While high-definition audio formats like DVD-Audio and Sony’s SACD are pretty much dead in the water at this point, I’d kill for this higher resolution version of the score to get released on one of those formats.

And for those of you worried that all of the digital remastering may erase some of the film’s original magic, Blu-ray producer Jun Takei seems to be keeping tabs on that:

Mr. Takei feels it is very important to maintain the character of the original film and the warmth of hand-painted animation. Even though modern audiences have grown used to computer painted animation it is very easy to go overboard during the cleaning process in an attempt to come closer to that look and feel, as has been the case with some Hollywood films where processing and noise reduction has been used to excess. Subsequently, AKIRA was given a thorough color correction and Mr. Takei believes the restoration team has gotten very close to the luster of the original animation cels, restoring the picture to a condition that allows AKIRA to be experienced as its creators had intended.

I’m sure this isn’t going to be the last anime film or series to get a Blu-ray restoration, but it definitely sounds like Bandai Visual and Pioneer has set the bar for high-definition anime remasters.

Akira hits Blu-ray on February 24, 2009.

Discuss: Will you be picking up the Akira Blu-ray? Are there any other anime (or other animation) releases that you’d like to see in high-definition?

  • Yeah but I read that the special features are shit on the blu ray. I'll still buy it though, considering I don't own it already.
  • Also I am an Afrom Samurai fan which they are starting to release on Blu Ray. I would definitely buy Dragon Ball Z if they released those volumes on Blu Ray.
  • It would be sort of hell to remaster all of Dragonball Z for Bluray, plus the animation was really crappy during non-fight scenes. That may end up hurting the show in high-definition.
  • Yeah probably, but its something I would still give a look at on Blu Ray. I would have thought they would have done like a box set or something with the up and coming live action shit-fest Dragonball.
  • Nyssus
Well in Japan they will start re-broadcasting DBZ in HD on April 5th for the 20th Anniversary. It will show newly recorded dialog by the original cast, new sound effects, new opening & ending sequence
  • what kind of process goes into remastering animated material?

do they redo the coloring? more fluid animation? i just don't understand what the process would be like. hoping you can clarify.
  • Ghost in the Shell!!! Princess Mononoke too!!!
  • Yah all the Miyazaki films would look GREAT on Bluray. Ghost in the Shell is getting a Bluray release as Ghost in the Shell V2.0. Seems like they made some more drastic changes to that film though.
  • Rob
Really? That puts me off getting it... GITS is superb, "drastic changes" sounds like a worrying move. I'm really hoping the info you've heard is incorrect... personally, I wouldn't be interested in a tinkered-with version.
  • They 'only' changed the visual nature of the film and have redone some scenes in CG (like the skyscraper jump). Other than that it's the same film.
  • Rob
Thanks for the info; no plot or editing changes then, which was my real concern.
  • Thrillhouse
I can NOT wait! I love anime, I love Akira, and I love special edition Blu-rays. Bring it on! KANEDAAAAAA!!!!
  • I'm not an anime fan at all, but I feel like obligated to check this out on blu-ray just to broaden my horizons.
  • This is definitely a good film to start out with. Also hit up Miyazaki's films starting with Mononoke, and Spirited Away.
  • Those are both on the queue, as well as Grave of the Fireflies.
  • From one non-anime fan to another, I'm glad you're giving it a shot. It's one of the few animes I enjoy. If anything you'll appreciate how completely badass it is.
  • cesaria
Miyazaki is god. I'm quite partial to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
  • Just ordered this last week, only think I find wrong so far is that the picture has a black bar surrounding it, not a problem if you're watching it in the dark but still.
  • Hmmm this may be my reason to actually buy a Blu-ray release. I have been looking for a reason to put that PS3 to use for something else.
  • I want me some Satoshi Kon films.
  • Good news for you, my friend!
Paprika is on Blu- Ray. :)
Not sure about Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers or Perfect Blue, though.
Millennium Actress and Paranoia Agent will look great on Blu-Ray. Damn.
  • I love this film and it gets better with subsequent viewings! I just don't like how all anime is placed in one category by us Americans. Anime or not, this is a great film.
  • Palmer
Hmmm, I'd like to see Trigun or Batman: TAS in HD. I know Batman recently had that giant DVD release, but I think it's the same transfers from the previous DVD editions.
  • Already got my copy and watched it two times. The Japanese Dolby TrueHD tracks is amazing and definitely one of the best audio tracks I've ever heard!
PQ is great too, even if it can't compete with "modern" digitial productions like Tekkonkinkreet.
I did a comparison between the 2002 dts DVD and the new BD release and everyone with a Blu-ray player just has to own this! :)

  • i have the Japanese 2001 box with 2 dvds (1film + 1extras) and 1 book with the whole film in storyboards by Otomo.
the only thing i hope for is that they have the same extras but in English hehe
  • Rob
Will have to find out more about this... If this is the original version, I'll be picking this up. If it's the dumbed-down version from Disc 1 of the "Ultimate Collection 2 DVD set, I'll pass.
  • i pre-ordered this over a year ago @ www.play-asia.com, other animes i have picked up on blu ray are:

    Steamboy
    Metropolice
    Ghost in the Shell
    Ghost In The Shell 2
GITS Stand Alone Complex (complete tv series)
  • shadow
Princess Mononoke on Blu-Ray will force me to purchase it, it would not be an option.
  • myfavouritepart
Can't wait to watch the opening biker gang sequence in HD!!!!
  • FatherBradley
Unless this somehow adds new colors to the film - I don't get how making a cartoon 1080p is going to do anything other than an aspect ratio improvement on 16:9 TVs. Must see this to be proven wrong.
  • lujs
    Evangelion please.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'd love all of this money to be spent on new animation. Too many new stories to be told in the original medium.____I love the improvements they are talking up for Akira, but between all of the midnight showings and all of the repeated viewings on different DVD releases, I've had enough.
  • How about Cowboy Bebop in BD?
  • Ahhh, the sounds of a dead format stumbling around not realizing it's dead yet...

I spent the money for the 2001 tin, they can go f themselves on this one.
  • When I first saw Akira on DVD in 1999 or so, the animation blew my ind away. can't wait for this...
  • that is just toooo amazingly cool. i cannot wait for akira in blu ray. that stuff was ground breaking. i remember i had to pretend to sleep so i could go watch it on tv after midnight, when my parents were asleep. I wore out that vhs tape, which i still have.
  • marz
guess everything's going to be done in HD and 3D.The simpsons episode that comes on tonite is supposed to be in HD for the first time. Soon, video games will prolly be in 3D that come with special glasses..actually,that sounds kinda cool..and a horror game would be even cooler.Imagine resident evil in 3D! As far as the akira thing goes,i'm just waiting for a good live action movie.wasn't somebody supposedly getting that together?!
  • Cowboy Bebop has been released on BD in Japan, sadly without English subtitles.

  • The high definition version will make the colours and contrast much more vibrant, image will crystal clear on HD TVs, and audio will be re-sexified. Everything is going to look and sound more beautiful than it ever has before.
  • REAL6
Well as long as it has the original English track. Not the new second one that corrected the mistakes. I perfer the original english track. But have both and the japanese track.
  • I never got into the whole Akira thing.
  • kidinsatiable
does anyone know if it has the original english track that was done for the VHS and Laserdisc or the updated english for the dvd?
  • Wow its about time some of the classic Akira stuff is getting put onto Blu Ray...can't wait. I also heard on the grapvine that they were looking into the Thundercats
  • What's the final verdict on this, is the blu-ray version true to the original?
  • No question in my mind, the original version will always be the best. The editors have got to be true to the original version for the true fans.
  • I'm not so sure about remakes and blu-ray versions, call me old fashioned but I prefer the originals.
  • Havent seen this movies yet, not sure if I want to spend the money on the blueray dvd or not.
