Fan Film: Escape From City 17

Inspired by the Half-Life 2, David and Ian Purchase created a short film titled Escape from City 17, which chronicles the escape from City 17 by some members of the citizens resistance. The commercial directing duo filmed guerrilla style with no money, no time, no crew, and no script. When they weren’t shooting they were hiding from security patrols in between takes. The spec project ballooned into a multipart series, and the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of only $500. The short was sent to Valve, who in result flew The Purchase Brothers out to their Seattle headquarters last year. The second episode is nearing completion. Watch the first episode after the jump.

Watch the short film in High Definition on YouTube. Thanks to /Film reader Oscar for the tip.

Totally went to school with David's girlfriend...she has been pushing anyone she can, night and day, to watch this video
  • The Fonz
That was pretty fucking cool. Despite it's subpar acting, the visuals and the general atmosphere were amazing. I would definitely want to see some more
  • OMG..that was amazing.
  • It's cool the way they blended the video game footage in with the footage they shot.
  • Pierre
Give these guys jobs (or, more realistically, internships) at Hollywood. They've got mad compositing skillz
  • I second that...now i wanna play some half life.
  • That was just fantastic work. Well done Purchase brothers. Now I have to go show this to everyone I know.
  • That was awesome! I've just finished playing Episodes 1 and 2 and this fits into the universe really well. Looking forward to the next ep!
  • Isaac
    that was really cool
  • someone should recreate this in machinima. good stuff.
  • looks better than Street Figher or Dragonball Z
  • Allan
    so true
  • God, this is amazing looking. I've seen it like 10 times already.
  • as an avid fan of the game, that was pretty damn cool. when do we get part 2?
  • Not been posted yet.
  • i can see that, which would be why i'm asking when the second will be released.
  • pretty damn good
  • void
    This is really good.
best adaptation i ever saw of hl2.

valve rejects all the adaptations scripts for half life
its time that somebody adapt this on bigscreen
half life saga is the best game i ever played
  • Thank god for the rejections. Could you imagine Boll making a HL movie?
    (shudders)

Alright this is completely bad ass stuff. Hollywood can eat it's blitz-editing-cgi-wtf-is-going-on action scenes. This is how it's done right!

If you like this, check out Neill Blomkamp's stuff.

  • That's amazing and I've never even played hl2 (although one of my friends is crazy about it). Awesome job!
  • Save your time and skip the game. You won't miss it. Why HL 1 and 2 are so loved is a complete mystery to me.
  • Go buy it now....

    Best game I've ever played.
  • These guys should be making this into a film. If this is what they can do with $500, imagine what they can create with more.
  • They implemented the atmosphere and tension HL is known for so well. That's just the first 5 minutes. Bravo.
  • I've been watching this non stop since Valve updated their cache page with the info this morning. It's pretty amazing. I love their work, Coca-Cola babies was an inventive commercial. Did it ever air, I haven't seen it before other than on their youtube page.
  • You should really play HL2 and it's add-on Episodes. They're brilliant masterpieces in the gaming world.
  • Gabe
Impressive. Most impressive. Obi-Wan has taug...oh wait a minute...
  • Aecx
Hell yeah that was awesome hire them, give them a real budget and create a real full lenght Halflife movie
  • Jon
Maybe Gabe Newell will finally be convinced to give the movie rights Christopher Nolan, Darren Aronofsky, or Ridley Scott.
  • The_Kid
I wonder what they could do with something original , thaf isn't an adaptation, they have to have some cool ideas in their brains, that vid was awesome. But I would rather see one of their own ideas come to life by them.
  • great work by those two. very excited to see episode 2 and see what else they can cook up
  • Jimmy Mac
    "I hate walking, okay!"
  • CheapCGMakesMePuke
Looked cheap. They really overdid it when it came to the muzzle flashes. LESS IS MORE, GUYS!

You people get impressed by almost nothing at all. It was 5 minutes of two guys standing between two trains, listening to static on a radio and yelling at each other.

    LAME, LAME, LAME!
  • edc
thats really cool of valve to fly them over.
  • I live in that city what is at beginning... It is Riga, capital of Latvia :) All buildings are identical except mountains in background :D
  • That was a brilliant video to consider they had literally nothing a part from themselves and a video-camera to make it. Also, they intercut scenes from the video-game and scenes they filmed themselves very well.
  • Anrkist
Here's one of my favorite fan made films. Based on 28 days later series.

  • WTF. how the hell do you make that for $500 dollars??? did they kidnap someone from Weta and force them to do the effects?
  • Really good if you consider the budget. Pretty good if you consider that the original source is one of the most boring games ever created.
  • One of the most boring games ever created? Are you sure you weren't playing Gears of War?
  • Yes i'm sure. Gears of War - at least - delivers an entertaining gameplay. While it is far from being one of my favorite games, i would still prefer it over HL.

I don't hate HL, i just simply see no reason why people adore it so much.
  • some major studio should give these guys a budget and let them create a feature length half -life movie stat! This was brilliantly executed, all the sounds and look of the game were great! And it looked way better than streetfighter! lol
  • That was incredible I can't wait until part 2.
  • Dan W
give these guys a movie contract
  • Looks like $500 goes a long way these days. That was a pretty cool short film. Special FX werent too bad either.
  • i always love watching really well done home made movies like these. shows whats in store for film. But one thing that's interesting is how a lot of these, the 3D special effects are executed so well, but the practical effects and cinematography never seems to be anything believable. it shows how focused lots of art/film schools put so much focus on the new thing (CGI). And it also shows how the easy way out of having a cinematic feel now a days is to make all your shots shaky. I know i'm sounding like i didn't like it, i did, i'm just being a picky bitch as usual i guess.

And yes, I understand that these guys were running from security while filming and there were desperate measures. But what i'm saying doesn't apply to this but lots of upcoming movies lately. I know i'm sounding like i didn't like it, i did, i'm just being a picky bitch as usual i guess.
  • wow this is freaking amazing. they should get funding to make it into a real movie man... awesome
  • I would say that is one of the best trailers, films I have seen in a while!
