The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 Movie Trailer

Columbia Pictures has released the movie trailer for The Taking of Pelham 123, which will be attached to The International this weekend. Based on the John Godey novel that spawned the 1974 film adaptation, Pelham 1 2 3 is directed by Tony Scott. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by the hijacking of a subway train. John Travolta stars as the criminal mastermind and leader of a highly-armed gang of four who threatens to execute the train’s passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. “As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there’s one riddle Garber can’t solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?”

Looks like it could be a fun thriller, a lot more action than I was expecting but like most of Tony Scott’s work, it doesn’t look transcendent of the genre. Or as /Film friend and Totally Rad Show host Dan Trachtenberg said on twitter yesterday: “Ridley Scott is constantly ahead of the times, his movies are timeless. Tony Scott is constantly OF the times, his flicks are dated.” I think that’s a pretty insightful comparison of the two brothers.

  • I love what Tony did with Man on Fire. This doesn't look as stylized but it looks like a good straight-forward action thriller.
  • Palmer
Hmmm, it looks okay enough for a remake. But I do miss the cheesy voice over that the 70s version had for it's trailer, that and Walter Matthau.
  • Trailer editors: Stop showing me the entire plot of the movie in 2:30. Even if you've never seen the original [which is a must for all cinephiles], you can already project what's to happen.
  • ps , peter, this may be a good place to repost this link http://www.hulu.com/watch/27822/the-taking-of-pel... to watch the original on hulu.
  • hmmn....John Travolta doesn't seem like the greatest bad guy to me....but the trailer has at least sparked my interest.

Officially one of my most anticipated of the year...and looks very likely Tony Scott will redeem himself for Domino (at least in my books)
  • I'm shocked with the lack of the hang crank shots...I loved what Tony Scott did with Man On Fire and Domino...it seems a little too bland for a Scott movie
  • I'm shocked with the lack of the hand crank shots...I loved what Tony Scott did with Man On Fire and Domino...it seems a little too bland for a Scott movie

been waiting for this for quite a long time, seems like Tony Scott have been pulishing his visual style (Domino gave me a bad headache), trailer shows too much and kinda makes the movie predictable (even to those who havent seen the original), i really enjoyed the countdown at the end :), good ride, cant wait.
  • Looks like another Scott "style over substance" movie that isn't very fun.
  • Lee
    hostage situations? thats so 90s
  • At least they're not Arabs....remember, kids - white people can hurt you too.
  • lol
  • really? will anyone here actually be watching the International?
  • Fred
I will. One of the movies I look most forward to this year (including Watchmen and Terminator ofcourse..)
  • i'm sorry, this movie just looks terrible. a big bank conspiracy....woopee.
  • Tony Scott is one of the best action directors in the past 20 years or so, him and Denzel are gold together.
  • IZNAM
The taking of my money, I don't think so. I'll take the O.G. version.
  • It kind of reminds me of Collateral for some reason. The only other releases on June 12 are a bad Eddie Murphy kids movie and a bad Sandra Bullock romantic comedy. It doesn't take much to guess what I'll be watching in theaters that weekend.
  • Oh wait, The Hangover with Zach Galifianakis comes out the same day. Must see both.
  • looks really bad, that it makes me want to watch speed all over again,
    ughh i hate the metro...

I disagree with Dan Tractenberg's statement that "Tony Scott is OF the time". Even though his films are often time hit and miss (hit mostly for me), his style is often revolutionizing. The aesthetics of Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide and Spy Game and Domino were the forerunners for much of the filmmaking styles we see today.
  • Kingdom of Heaven and G.I. Jane don't scream timeless to me while Top Gun still holds up. Though I get Trachtenberg's point. More often than not Ridley breaks the mold while Tony does not.
  • This looks terrible. There was no need to remake this film. The original is already excellent.

Spy Game definitely deserves a lot more love and respect. It's a great, overlooked film. I was almost sure I'd read through this thread without anyone even mentioning it - so, thanks :)

As for Pelham123 - I like this type of film. I'll buy a ticket.
  • Spy Game is certainly an underrated movie. It had a good cast, an interesting plot that span decades and tons of style to support it.

I also forgot to mention Enemy of the States. Not a great thriller, but an engrossing one nonetheless. It was also very influential in changing how later spy movies are done. Ridley Scott certainly didn't break any mold when he followed his brother's visual template while making Body of Lies.
  • I hated Man on Fire, but i am a fan of Tony. This film looks like it will be a good thriller. Good to see John T, back in a good movie.
  • eh. ill watch it only because i like the original but this looks like it will be mediocre at best. heist movies need to be suspenseful and tense. not action packed with retarded chase scenes and shootouts. the other thing is, i remember wanting the bad guys to get away in the original. this trailer makes it look like you wont like the bad guys at all, and youre supposed to relate with denzel washington the whole time. that is going to be boring as hell.
  • I'm shocked with the lack of hand crank shots...I loved what Tony Scott did with Man On Fire and Domino...it seems a little too bland for a Scott movie even if it's a remake
  • I prefer the more bland Tony Scott I have yet to make it through Domino because the direction drives me crazy. But I really liked his toned down stuff like Enemy of the State and Crimson Tide.
  • What about True Romance? :)
  • I like True Romance but when I watch it I can't help but think how much better it could have been if Tarantino directed. I know that not far to Tony Scott but I can't help it. But your right he did really tone it down for that one.
  • Seem to be lacking in the humour that ran through the original from the Matthau character being out of his depth - I'm not sure I'd ever believe that Denzel couldn't kick Travolta's ass. Especially a Travolota that seems to be channeling the biker from YMCA.....

Seems compentent enough in the action though. I hope they use the iconic theme in some capacity, too,

BUT - will the last bad guy still be caught by a sneeze? Will there be comedy Japanese who secretly understand and speak "Engrish"?
  • Looks ok, kinda reminded me of other movies like 'Speed' and shit...
  • i LOVE Denzel Washington and I wish he would get more roles in A-type films. come on, Hollywood, give him more roles!!!
  • PeteRepeat42
While watching the trailer I couldn't help but think of Inside Man, where Denzel Washington plays a detective who's acting like a negotiator and chief of police. Now he's playing a civil servant who's acting like a negotiator.

Looks like pure Tony Scott. In other words, pure shite.

The original film is one of the most overlooked action flicks of the 70's, and remains a top favorite recommendation of mine when clients at my video store come in looking for something good that they haven't seen. The humor, the actors, the soundtrack are all pitch-perfect. Matthau's characterization is brilliant, as are all the other major players and supporting actors. What really makes the film work so well is how the majority of the drama is underplayed, allowing the tension to build slowly and inexorably. Tony Scott has never had that kind of patience.

The only film of Tony's that I found to be decent was "Spy Game." I haven't seen "The Hunger", but that's supposed to be good as well. However, all his other films are such chest-pounding barrages of over-macho, hyper kinetic posturing that I don't think I could enjoy them even if I drank a twelve-pack. I always feel like I'm trying to watch something that's being strobed off a disco ball because of Tony's cocaine-fueled editing style.

Travolta works as a successor for Robert Shaw the same way Steve Martin works as a successor for Peter Sellers. All four have talent, but obviously NOT is the same way. The reason Robert Shaw is such a badass in the original is because he never blew his cool. He never got rattled, never talked a lot of loud trash and definitely never pointed his gun at anyone unless he meant to use it. From this trailer I predict that Travolta's character will lower his gun 90% of the time and then make some lame joke about why he didn't need to follow through.

I've always liked Denzel, but this movie looks like an easy paycheck as he doesn't seem to be given much to do acting wise. Finally, it looks like they completely changed the last half of the film, which seems really unnecessary to me since so few people are aware of the original, much less of its awesome twist.

    Bwa ha ha ha!

    5 5 5... 4 4 4... 3 3 3....

The original was good, but I've seen it so it kinda cuts the suspense for me...unless there's a twist in the ending. Also, Travolta (and overactor) in the same movie as Washington (underactor) seems like an unbalanced combination.

Trailer looks different -- and better -- than I expected. Travolta with an edge, gone all the way to the dark side. My problem with the film as set up by the trailer is that it seems like there is no possibility of a way out -- the "good guy" is so far out of his league, I can't see him realisticallly getting the upper hand. If there is a reasonable and satisfying conclusion, I'll see the film and love it. If not; I have no interest in Bambi vs Godzillla.
