The People vs. George Lucas Teaser Trailer

I have never met anyone who loves George Lucas, but over my lifetime I’ve met countless Star Wars fanatics that blame him for ruining everything. It’s kinda weird, that there is a hatred towards someone who created a universe that is loved by so many. It’s kinda crazy if you really think about it. What happened? How did this happen? There is obviously much more to this story beyond Jar Jar and a bunch of Ewoks.

Exhibit A Pictures has released the first first teaser trailer for The People vs. George Lucas, a documentary that “delves into the impassioned feelings and opinions expressed by fans and foes of legendary screen icon George Lucas, and the many debates surrounding his legacy.” It looks like a talking head-style oc, but I’m sure any fans of the Star Wars films would be interested in checking it out (whenever it gets released). Plus, what other movie trailer would feature a song titled “George Lucas Raped Our Childhood”? I’m pretty sure this is going to be the only one (that is, unless they get greedy and make a sequel). Check out the trailer after the jump, and feel free to rant in the comments below.

  • People always loved Lucas until after the new films were released. Frankly, I admire the guy. Without him, there would be no Pixar, no ILM, no THX... the list can go on.
  • The One Two
I agree. Without ILM, where would movies be? However, I think most people would agree that he has milked the Star Wars thing for FAR TOO LONG. I really don't think he has any ideas left. Almost everyone also knows that Indiana Jones KOTCS was terrible so we don't need to get into that.
  • I remember there being a hatred for him before the prequels, maybe not as strong of a hatred, but it existed. I remember a lot of people hated Return of the Jedi and what he had done with the Ewok movies...etc And then the "Special Editions" where he changed around classic scenes....etc
  • Why is Jedi hated so much, sure the ewoks were fucking stupid but its still a pretty good movie... despite not nearly being as good as Empire and New Hope.
  • that looks really interesting. It's a really cool concept, I just wonder what else is going to be in it. Is it going to be an hour and a half of people just saying they hate/love lucas? Either way, I'll check it out, looks cool.
  • Something tells me this is just going to be a two hour rant about how much people hated the prequels. The same soapbox speeches we've all been forced to hear for almost a decade now.
  • This is pretty much putting moving pictures to what you can read on a million forums on the interwebs.
  • That's exactly right... only these guys turned it into a payday. I've always though an idea like this would make a good documentary... just never did anything about it. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
  • Terry
I would not say I "love" him but I do respect him a lot! I liked the prequels and Crystal Skull..I do not always agree with him but it's his universe, his sandbox, his vision.
  • I really can't stand people. He created the greatest movie ever made: Star Wars. and he has done sooo much for the film industry (not saying he hasn't hurt it a bit). as John Carpenter once said, America loves to create and destroy their heroes. and truer words can never be spoken.

he crapped out with 2 of the 3 of his new trilogy. doesnt take away the fact that Star Wars, Empire, and Return are still incredible.
  • /filmluvsindy
i have no hatred to him. he gave me star wars. but more importantly, INDIANA JONES. yeah speilberg and harrison were just as important. but it came from his head. i think he's great for that.
  • GeorgeLucas'footrest
Sad and kinda pathetic. Hero worship, that is. I know these people. Sure, Lucas made a few decent films, but as far as his "science-fiction" goes, it's just basic archetypal, by the numbers crap. Star Wars as a franchise, was a fluke. It's nothing but a cynical merchandising monster; everyone knows it, but we still can't get enough!George Lucus didnt rape your childhood; your childhood bent over and begged for it. Sorry, someone had to say it.

SOME PEOPLE FUCKING LIKE JAR JAR BINKS
  • I did, I thought he was funny as shit...
  • dvva
People have way too much time on their hands. To hate is a pretty strong emotion so there must be a kind of weird obsession for the man.
  • o jeez relax hunny dont go all force unleashed on us...... by the way i cant wait to see this doc.
  • the illustration looks pretty cool. the documentary looks lame. There are a trillion other things out there more deserving of my time than watching people cry about the Prequels.

that's all it seems like it will be. crying about the prequels (and to a small extent apparently: jedi).
  • I Love George. But yeah the new films were not AS good but heck I still like his stuff. I am a Star Wars fan and would love to see this...

    Plus! He made freakin ILM!
  • Zing. Me too
  • here here
  • Your haters will ALWAYS be your biggest fans...
  • Jeff L.
Is this documentary a moot point? Is there anyone on this planet who doesn't know about this backlash? Or is this just another excuse for nerds to bitch about the prequels?
  • Palmer
Hey may have not raped our childhood. But he sure as hell messed it up.
  • This looks horrendously dumb.
  • produced by george lucas.
  • Donkey Punch
Lucas created some awesome movies: THX-1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars, Raiders of The Lost Ark. The problem with him is that he then drove the franchise into the ground with horrible sequels: More American Graffiti, all the Star Wars Prequels, Indiana Jones 2 and 4.

I look forward to watching this documentary. It looks half serious and pokes fun at the man we both love and hate. Damn you George!

Why do people hate Jar Jar Binks so much? He's freaking adorable!
  • He raped a childhood that wouldn't have existed without him.

    Quite the conundrum.

All these haters...bunch of whiners. Well every great entity has haters: God has atheist and pagans; Lincoln had Booth and the South; Kennedy had Oswald, Russians, Cubans, and mobsters; Lucas has these whiners;. The list goes on and on, but the thing is the former of the two are always remembered in the end as the ones with the most positive impact. The latter are viewed as whiny little fuckers that would not be anything had it been for their better counterpart.

I wonder what silly shit these whiny fuck-tards will come up with had they been the original creator of the Star Wars universe. Jar Jar is a necessary character. He is comic relief, and he is one of those characters that anchor stories to the ground. Of course our whiny little haters would know of his importance because they have immersed themselves in countless works of literature.

It's ironic how these haters are bold enough to turn their hatred into an actual movie even though they lap up anything Lucas produces that are Star Wars related like hungry mongrels. I can bet a million dollars that the majority of these self-proclaimed haters continued to watch Episodes II and III even after they proclaimed their hatred for Episode I because of Jar Jar. Hypocritical, whiny, childish, little scum bags that dare besmirch the integrity of Lucas' masterpiece! I'd love to see a movie about the haters of Lucas and how dumb and whiny they are.
  • George Lucas never raped my childhood because I didn't watch Star Wars or Indiana Jones until a few years ago....but I still think he's screwed up anything good he's created.
  • I'm in the exact same boat, Regina. Only, I didn't watch Star Wars on purpose. I couldn't stand it then and I still can't stand it today.
  • I also don't understand this hatred. The prequels were a lot of fun!, i prefer having these prequels to have none.
The battle of Geonosis at the end of Ep II was amazing as well as all Ep III. I also like Jar Jar in Ep1 but that maybe because I was a boy then, an that was the targeted audience for that movie.

People always argued that the prequels should have been darker but I say they don't understand StarWars, because they were never supposed to be so dark, they're based on the old matinee series.

Anyway George Lucas is the creator of this Universe and whatever he does woth it is cannon, we are only fans.
  • This looks great - I agree with Peter's observation that people were very much revolted at the new trilogy AND the special edition. Greedo should've never shot first. Fuck.
  • I loved Jedi, IMO best film out of the whole lot.. But yes, there were some problems when the Ewok movies came out. Even though i live caravan of courage.
  • the Ewoks ruined Jedi for me. sorry.
  • jedi was my fav growing up, it has the best space battle and the amazing vader/luke/emporer payoff, but empire's my fav now. it just feels better to watch, mainly because it's flawless and i can defend it o the death, if someone calls you out on ewoks there's nothing you can say!
  • unfortunately people start to believe that their heroes arent average human beings and make mistakes. I grew up watching star wars and I still love them.. I think they are contrary to what footrest said excellent films, and say what you want about the story being "basic" but the fact of the matter is it paved the way for a lot of movies after it. And the bottom line is, people love those movies. And they have every right to enjoy them, and every right to hate the prequels if thats their opinion, i just think people take it all a little too seriously. Thats how he envisioned them, and it was his choice to make em that way.

I definitely admire Lucas accomplishments over his career but at some point along the line his mind switched tracks and he fell back on Star Wars and Indy, he just cant seem to leave those franchises alone (even if it annoys his many fans) but at same time he seems almost scared to do anything truly new.

I wish he'd start trying to make new movies again & put the old stuff behind him.
  • I wasn't around for the 1st films so the impact of it all is totally lost on me.
I do enjoy the 1st 3 alot but not enough to hate the guy, he wanted to tell the whole story but .. well I guess added too much or too many bad elements to over shadow what he wanted to do.
  • WoW I am so glad I get outside at least 3 times a day!! That is almost as bad as Second Skin.
  • Schillaci
People relate George Lucas with Star Wars , but what they don't understand is that he created the technology that everybody uses in Visual effects today, in fact a lot of people that worked for him before , now owns the mayor visual effects houses that make other movies...
I see him as a visionary genius that shaped the modern visual effects industry/
  • frank c
people need to stop using the whole "raped my childhood" rant. it's old and lame. get over it
  • David Simmons
Hate is too strong a word, and implies a depth of feeling that I just don't have. What bothers me about the new films is that they often intrude on my enjoyment of watching the originals. Not much, but enough that I'll have a flash of "ewww" when I'm reminded of what came later.

I loved the first two films in the original series, while ROTJ remains ok. If he hadn't tailored and targeted the new films to such a specific age range then they probably would be more highly regarded.

I think Lucas' biggest difficulty is that he won't involve people in the higher creative levels when it comes to the storytelling. He's openly admitted that he dislikes writing, so why not hire someone to do it? Surely you could find a few million volunteers?!

I think he feels a very strong pressure to retain sole authorship of the franchise, but in fact LOTS of people were involved. He neither wrote the screenplay nor directed TESB, and it's the best film in the series.

If anything good is going to come out of the franchise, then he needs to relinquish control and allow other creative people come in and tell new stories. A fresh perspective is sorely needed at this point.
  • I guy who is really out of touch with film making and his fans.
  • hahahah brilliant stuff
  • Scott
George started going downhill when he made ROTJ. And then he went back and screwed up A New Hope and Empire.
