Yesterday it was revealed that Samuel Bayer, the music video and commercial director behind some of the seminal alternative rock music videos of the 1990’s, had signed on to helm a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. Today LatinoReview is reporting a rumor that Jackie Earle Haley is one of Platinum Dunes choices to play Freddy Kruger in the reboot.

Update: Producer Brad Fuller tells SHOCK the the rumor is not true: “I can absolutely deny [this rumor]. We have not chosen a Freddy Krueger we’re not even negotiating with anyone yet.”

The actor was nominated for an Academy Award for playing a child molester in Little Children, and next plays a crazy mental patient in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Shutter Island. Most reader will probably see him next don a mask as Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen. To me, Haley possesses the perfect balance of creepiness and intelligence needed for the character of Freddy. What do you guys think?

  • With Samuel Bayer signed on to direct and the idea of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy, I almost got excited for the nightmare remake. If they did sign him, then all they'd have to do is get a new writer and the movie might actually be pretty cool.
  • JEH would make an awesome Freddy Krueger, way better than Billy Bob Thorton.
  • But we all know that if they were both up for the part, the studio would most likely pick Billy Bob, well that's if he didn't ask for too much money. I honestly think that both of them could pull it off.

i think that would definitely work, although i don't want to see a remake at all.
  • He has the perfect look. Even though it's not true, it's totally plausible.

Personally I'm for not remaking old movies, but with someone as great as Jackie (I'm really just judging his acting ability in Little Children) they may possibly reboot the franchise like Batman Begins or something.

Does anyone else think this movie sounds like a slight against what all the other films were? What I like about the Friday the 13th movie that just came out was that it was gory and suspenseful, but it knew what kind of film it was. There was comedy and there were jokes. That is the essence of Freddy Krueger. If they are going to take away that eerie air of "I'm the dream demon and I like it" then I'm not sure I want to see that. I'm not doubting whether or not Mr. Haley can portray Krueger. I'm asking if this version of the character should exist at all.

Freddy went into a more flamboyant, comedical tone due to Newline and other influences on the francise and success of Freddy--this is why Wes Craven backed off to begin with. Freddy, originally was set to be a child molester, a dark pyschological serial killer who hunted and preyed on child, while in their sleep; who later became known as the "Springwood Slasher". I am a deep, devoted and hardcore fan of Freddy, but I wouldn't mind seeing them dive into what perhaps, Craven head set his heart and mind on in the beginning.

Who to play such a historical horror icon? I don't know. But I do, like others, hope they chose one who is inspired, passionate and devoted to the series, storyline etc, as England was; which is what made him so great at it. We want to be able to lose who the actor is iFreddy went into a more flamboyant, comedical tone due to Newline and other influences on the francise and success of Freddy--this is why Wes Craven backed off to begin with. These are my tn front of us and see the character before us.

    These are my thoughts.

for haley's career, and our viewing pleasure - this is a TERRIBLE idea. there is much more important work to be done.

fortunately haley strikes me as the type of guy who is in this industry for the craft and not the paycheck or exposure. if a different director or writers were involved, then maybe, but as it is moving forward, this is just not a project he should waste his time on.

    sure? why not?
  • Robert Englund is probably best choice to play Kruger..yeah probably the best. JESUS! It's like making Star Wars episode 7 and asking "so who are we gonna get to play Luke Skywalker....?"
  • I love the Nightmare Movies, i9ts about time they get going with these remakes. Rob Zombie knows what he's doing.
  • Ever since I first heard they were in talks to make this, the only actor I could see showing the depth to make a remake of Kruger that not only play homage to the original, but reinvented it for a modern audience was BEN FOSTER. I'm unfortunately not too familiar with Haley's work, but he does have the look. I think Foster could provide the animated athleticism to the role that I remember Kruger having.
  • even if it's not true...it's a great suggestion they should act on...Haley has the darkness Freddy would need....I think it would be awesome if the project could attract acting talent like this....I'd rather see a strong actor instead of some random stunt person cast in the role

Do we really need a Nightmare on Elm Street Remake? I mean, yeah I know there's the Friday the 13th Remake (which I don't think needs remaking) but come on. Are studios ever going to get tired of remakes? Though to be fair, I did like the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers remake with Donald Sutherland.
  • hopefully they do
  • I guess he could play Freddy. I was hoping that the Billy Bob Thornton rumors were true, I would have enjoyed watching that happen. If this does eventually come true, I wouldn't mind.

i know alot of us guys are against for a remake but its too late the film industry going to do it no matter what we say remake are the new thing nowadays. but i think Jackie Earle Haley would be great as Freddy Kruger but i wonder what our main man Robert Englund think about this remake
  • I wonder what he thinks, too.
  • I think I read it on hear that in interviews Englund is all for a remake, and although he doesn't want to be Freddy, he does want a cameo (which I'm sure they'll give.)
  • Johnny Depp should soooooooooo make a cameo, too.
  • haley already looks like freddy even without makeup so i'm all for it.
  • MICHAEL
UM HOW ABOUT NO!!!!!!!!!!! ROBERT ENGLUND IS FREDDY HE MADE THE CHARACTER AND HE DESERVES TO BE FREDDY IN THE REMAKE. • John
A remake would suck, the series itself is timeless.
  • asaf
    why a new writer ?
  • UHM how about you just keep Robert Englund. No one else in the world will be able to play freddy like him maybe becuase HE IS FREDDY. I refuse to see this movie if he's not in it. You can't make a nitemare on elm st. with Robert like seriously. I don't know what everyone is thinking.
  • Name
There is no way that anyone can be Freddy except Robert Englund. I have been a huge fan of the Nightmare on Elm St series, and have them all on dvd. Back in 2003 Robert Englund came back as Freddy in Freddy vs Jason. Please don't ruin the series by changing the actor to play Freddy. Robert Englund is and will ALWAYS be Freddy Kruger.
