The Wachowski Brothers to Direct Superman Reboot?

Could The Wachowski Brothers be in line to direct a reboot of Superman for Warner Bros? A scooper over at AICN caught an interview with V For Vendetta director James McTeigue on Berlin television where the filmmaker admitted that Plastic Man was originally scheduled to be the brothers’ next project, but the film has been delayed indefinitely due to a major shake-up of projects at Warner Bros. McTeigue was even signed on to direct second unit, as he has done on past Wachowski Brothers productions.

Here is where things get interesting. According to the report, McTeigue said that Bryan Singer was not going to helm another Superman film because Warner Bros wants to reboot the franchise. Also, Singer wants to move on to the Logan’s Run remake that he was developing before he got sidetracked a couple years back. And Singer’s departure has forced WB executives to take an entirely new direction.

Ready for it? The Wachowski Brothers have been approached to develop and direct the Superman reboot. Now before you freak out, nothing has been finalized. The Wachowski Brothers have not agreed to the project yet, but McTeigue said if they did, there is a chance he would take over as director of Plastic Man. I can’t even imagine what a Wachowski Brothers-directed Superman movie would look like.

Discuss: What do you guys think?

  • Just get Jon Hamm! Please!
  • Jon Hamm should be Captain America
  • gah
Captain America? Steve Rogers is in his twenties when he volunteers for the super-serum and he's blonde. I agree, Jon Hamm would make a great Superman. I guess the question that should be posed: Would Jon Hamm agree to be Superman?
  • it would look like the coolest fuckin superman man movie since... ever
  • starscream9289
Superman dodging Kriptonite shards in slow-motion.
  • Kdawg
Might be kinda cool. I for one actually enjoyed Speed Racer. I think this could end up being rather interesting.
  • Hoopersx
A Wachowski brothers Superman? Didn't they already make that and call it The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions?
  • " I can’t even imagine what a Wachowski Brothers-directed Superman movie would look like"

I can. It will be a visually astounding film that lacks any sort of substance or understanding of the character at all.
  • skippy
"...lacks any sort of substance or understanding of the character at all."

you obviously have the Wachowski's confused with Michael Bay.
  • Backer Backer
agreed. How could you say it "lacks any understanding?" Despite its brief role, Descartes' themes in the Matrix provides a decent introduction into philosophy as well as incredibly entertaining.
  • Plastic Man? Wasn't that the title of the last Superman movie?
  • Nope that was called Wooden Man.
  • hgrgt
    fuck
  • This could be EPIC...visually. And absolutely terror story wise. Lets hope they don't write it, and hope casting is superb to offset their style.
  • they should the story mark millar has been writing.
  • I prefer Geoff Johns
  • if geoff johhs wrote this movie it would be amazing. i would rather have him write a green lantern movie though.
  • From what I've heard about Millar's story is that it would be an 8 hour story that would take 3 movies to tell. It would start with the origins and end with the death of Superman from the Sun dying. It sounds alright but WB might not have the money to make such a big movie like that and hope the fans will respond positively.
  • Wow, I'm disgusted buy at least 3 things in that artical first off Plastic Man is probably the lamest super hero on the DC roster why would they make a movie based on a character that isn't even popular in the comic world. Second Singer's planning on a Logan’s Run remake WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And third The Wachowski Brothers doing Superman I don't really hate it but there has to be better choices out there.
  • I get the first two points and why you hate them but not the third. I really think that they can make a great Superman movie. If they were just set to direct and not write the whole thing, it could work out for the best. This is the best Superman news I've heard in a long time.
  • I just think the The Wachowski are very hit and miss with even there directing. "Bound" = Good, "Matrix" = Great" but "The Matrix Reloaded" = Bad, "The Matrix" Revolutions = Really Bad even if you accept "Speed Racer" as a good movie, which is debatable, it this news really doesn't make me jump for joy although I would be willing to give it a chance.
  • Rob
V for Vendetta was good although they only produced it and wrote the screenplay. I do agree that their movies are all over the place in terms of quality. The original Matrix is a classic. Reloaded was just dumbed down for action sequences which didn't save it from the stupid turn they took "The One" mythology. Revolutions had a warped retelling of Revelations from the Bible that no one seemed to get (and why do you take the movie out of the Matrix anyway and set most of it in Zion?).

I walked out of Speed Racer. I couldn't take the God-awful dialog that had every character sounding like they were mentally challenged.

    I really liked Bounce though.

I think the Wachowski brothers are too twisted for Superman. I would like to see more edge in the next Superman than the boring homage to Richard Donner's original that Bryan Singer made, but I think if you take that edge too far you get a Dark Knight rip off except this Superhero can fly.
  • John Hamm could be an interesting Superman, but he honestly has the look of a lot of heros. Also I think this is a rumor. Bryan Singer said a little while back that he doesn't think Logan's Run will happen. I personally want to see Singer do the sequel but it wont happen. Wachowskis would be weird for Superman but better then Bret Ratner. So considering I am one of the few who like Speed Racer, I think a Wachowski bros Superman would be cool. Also I think WB wants the Wachowski to do it so they can have there "dark" superman.
  • Also lol could anyone image Reeves as a Superman... man that would be bad. Also have Lawrence Fishburne as Lex Luthor!
  • For a second I thought you meant Christopher Reeves. Because yeah, it would be kinda awkward to get that to work.
  • skippy
you mean, Christopher Reeve (no "s"). I thought he meant him too, though then i thought he meant George Reeves, who played Superman in the b&w TV series.

who refers to Keanu Reeves as just "Reeves?"
  • LOL I thought that, but I thought with a refrance to Fishburne that people would get it... and its an article on the Wachowskis.
  • Boo-Ya
Booooo-Yaaaaaaa. Offer Tom Welling 10 million to be in it.
  • We're living in an era when Mickey Rourke is getting 250,000 for Iron Man 2. Ten Mill?
  • That seems a bit much for somebody who has no talent.
  • Tom Welling that is. I think Mickey has more than proven that he can act.
  • gah
Seriously. No one's giving Tom Welling anything close to that number. Brandon Routh was only paid one million for Superman Returns which had a budget of like 300 million.
  • Boo-Ya
I'd pay him Ten Million easily. Then I'd hire all the other cast of Smallville. I'd rape everyone's childhood if I could. =D
  • arent they the wachowsky brother and sister now? this is 2008 be politically correct !
  • try 2009, but good effort anyway.
  • Solid
Interesting, /film. It seems that the next superman movie is at least starting to move forward, probably because of batman. I just hope they don't listen to the fanboys. None of those guys know what they want outside of a few who can appreciate something based on its own merits and not some outside criteria.
  • I kinda agree with that. Sometimes, Fanboys can be your great key to success; sometimes not.
  • I kinda agree with that. Sometimes, Fanboys can be your great key to success; sometimes not.

All you need is a compromise.
  • Rorshach
NO! Never compromise, not even in the face of armageddon!
  • Kal El of Krypton
This is a rare instance where 'lol' is actually applicable. Nice touch.
As a Superman fanboy, I don't know why you dogged on ALL of us. Some of us have an open mind or some good ideas!
  • Brad Bird should direct the Superman Reboot.. but that's just my wishful thinking.
  • He would be perfect.
  • I've Seen Pictures Google IT !
  • zac
um, that was a hoax, man. I can google bigfoot too.
  • Well I think this could be really cool. Since Superman has a whole timeline to choose from, they could choose a lot of the coolest parts and blend it together. I, personally, don't want to see a dark Superman. Superman isn't supposed to be dark. But The Wachowski Bros. could make this awesome.

And I also liked Speed Racer.
  • I think that if they kept the tone from Superman Returns, that would be dark enough. That film was pitch black compared to the campy 70s Superman movies.
  • ARe you serious? a Wachowski made Superman. Fuck that. After that last POS I'll skip it..and Captain Howdy - you KNOW how much I love Superman and for me to say that, fuck this shit, I'm out.
  • I agree with you. FUCK THAT!
  • I guess I'll respond even though I'm not Captain Howdy. Anyway, this news, if anything, means that they are trying to get the ball rolling for an eventual reboot to the Superman Franchise. So far, this is only a rumor so don't go all ape shit and abandon the franchise, Superman needs all the fans he can get right now. As for the Wachowski news, it's fine by me as long as they have a good script for the film. It can't be that hard to find a good script for an origin story for Superman so if someone writes one up real quick, they could have this film out by 2010.
  • whatever
you mean the wachowski siblings are slated to direct an awful movie.
