Brad Bird’s 1906 Earthquake is Getting Smaller?

Last week Brad Bird revealed that he was still trying to crack the screenplay for his live-action debut 1906, which seemed baffling to us. In March 2008, our spies told us that Pixar was busy building virtual scale models of a period-era San Francisco and that Warner Bros had put a hold on all of the soundstages that were available on its Burbank lot. So what happened? How did the project get delayed? And what are the script issues exactly? Jim Hill claims that the economy and budget cuts have been sucking the life out of Bird’s big screen epic.

Apparently the recession hit and the three studios involved started to grow worried that the $200 million projected budget which would be required to film Bird’s expansive story might be too much of a risk. This is when Warner Bros quietly released that hold it had on all its Burbank soundstages and then supposedly asked Brad to rework his screenplay. And since then, Bird has been trying to bring the film’s budget down by minimalizing the scale of the film, according to the report. It always seemed clear to me that Bird was out to make a Titanic-like historical epic. In interviews he would talk about the scale, mentioning all the different areas of the city that would need to be shown in the story.

So when Bird says that “It’s (been) a really hard script to write”, I think he’s talking about the comprimises that he’s being foreced to make. And I think the end of the interview he did with Latino Review was very telling. Bird commented” We’ll see if they have the courage to make it.” And that’s a good question… will they?

  • I think if the studio like WB spent 200 million on a tentpole (like Green Lantern), it's a risk but it might be profitable in the long run because it's a summer tentpole and a comic book franchise. It's pretty much a surefire hit unless something goes wrong (like hiring Andy Dick as Hal Jordan)

Now with 1906, 200 mill on a drama about an earthquake in San Fran. It's a huge huge risk, especially now. There's no gurrentees that it'll make a profit. Even the golden boy "Benjamin Button" still has failed to make a profit because it was expensive.
  • Benjamin Button didn't fail to make a profit nor it flopped. It performed pretty well at the box office, and the studio was reportedly happy with the success it had.

but I agree about "1906," I don't see how it's going to be a hit. I smell a huge flop.
  • Yeah its not a bomb like some say, while its not turning out big bucks it is still not a bomb. Plus they will make a shit load of money on dvd. Also why do so many people give Benjamin Button crap? I have read people saying nobody loves that movie, they why is it in IMDB's top 150? I didn't love it but I really liked it and I think people give it too much crap.
I don't think 1906 would be a big hit too, but I bet it would be a great movie. It would definitely make more then Australia though.

Are you all idiots? Have you not seen 'The Iron Giant' or 'The Incredibles' ? BOTH films rated 97% at RT ? Bird is an extremely passionate film maker. WB would be making a huge mistake to not go forward with this!
  • As much of risk it may be, its Brad Bird of Incredibles and Ratatouille fame. That guy can do anything, I hope they do have the courage because this could be amazing. I really don't want him to scale back and not follow his original vision. Brad Bird is just amazing in animation, can't wait to see him in live action!
  • I say, give hope and freedom to Brad Bird, I have yet to see a bad movie that he's been involved with, and YES you guessed it I am a Brad Bird fan, I think that he and John Lasster are an inspiration to many people and I would LOVE to see him doing a live-action movie.

Dude, GIVE this man his money. He's a fantastic film maker and of a rare breed who actually enjoys STORY AND CHARACTERS FIRST!

I'd see 1906 over any crap fest out of Fox's studio.
  • gah
I love Brad Bird, but I just can't get excited about this project. I really hope he moves onto something else.
  • yeah. agreed. i highly doubt i'm going to go watch 90+ minutes of EEAARRTTHHHQQUUAAKKEE!!
  • ARGH!
That's because the freaking movie IS NOT GOING TO BE 90+ MINUTES OF EEAARTHHQUAAAAKEE!! Had you investigated into the film a little more, you'd know it's not a diaster movie. It's using San Fran during this time as a backdrop for a charater piece.
  • so its a character piece with an EEAARRTHHQQUUAAKKEE?? backdrop??
  • This project doesn't excite me either, I much rather watch the Incredibles 2!
  • I really hope this project does not become a misfortune to Mr. Bird. I do have high hopes for this project.

I think it would be a shame if big budgets were only reserved for action, comic, or franchise friendly films. Every once in a while, it's nice to see a bunch of money spent on a different type of film. You may not like the subject matter of Benjamin Button, but Fincher sure made a beautiful film.

They told Cameron that Titanic would fail.

Brad Bird is to good at this movie making stuff to fail. Perhaps, it's a risky film in today's climate, but I sure would love to see anything he wants to do.
  • Agreed! He is a fnatsatic film maker and his proven himself! give him the money!!
