Collider got a chance to talk to director Michael Bay on the red carpet, and the director talked about his highly anticipated Transformers sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Here are the six things I learned:

1. “It’s bigger, and It’s not just trying to be bigger to be bigger” … “This one is Epic in scale” - After seeing the huge constructicon in the teaser trailer, we kinda expected this.
2. “The robots have much more personality.” - Which was a common fan complaint of the first film. Bay blamed the technology, but now says they’ve figured out how to make the Transformers emote.
3. “I know the fans wanted it Darker, we made it darker…” - Sounds like this could be the Empire Strikes Back of the Transformers trilogy… speaking of which….
4. Bay says he would return for a third film, but he’s taking a year off no matter what.
5. The running time is currently 2 hours and 20 minutes, but Bay is still deep into editing

And as you know, Bay shot three scenes of Transformers 2 using IMAX cameras. Bay calls the IMAX footage “Awesome” and teases with a grin firmly implanted on his face, “It’s different when you see Optimus Prime fighting in IMAX! It’s just very different!” Watch the full interview embedded below.

  • Bay is BORN to direct Transformers !
  • suuuuhhhhhhwwweeeeeet
  • this will be better than part 1, but not as good as the Lionel Richie Collection...
  • ur an idiot u know that ?
  • this will be better than part 1, but not as good as the Lionel Richie Collecting...
  • I guess I'm a fan of Bay's. I like his movies because they are entertaining and don't try to be anything else (although I agree with the population of Earth that Pearl Harbor was a terrible flick).
I think he's a perfect match for a Transformers movie, because lets be honest, they could never really be sci-fi masterpieces that raise questions about what it means to be human, have a soul etc etc, they're about giant robots fighting!

Having said all this, I've always thought that Bay's humor is weird. Its that whole "it's funny when I pretend to punch people" kind of thing that I've never understood. It's like when you see a bunch of guys talking about how good they are at fighting and how "I could smash you if I ever had to" and you think "really? That's what you guys talk about?".....anyways I'm going off on a tangent here....but does anyone get what I mean?
  • What else does Michael Bay have to do? He likes making giant robot movies, remaking horror movies, loves sequels. I think that he should do Bad Boys 3 because he's not going to do anything original for awhile.
  • I'm pretty sure Will Smith would too. It seems like Will would play anything as long as he's getting money for it.
  • He may be too busy with the I Am Legend prequel, blah.
  • I have no doubt that this is going to be better than part 1.
  • I just hope he doesn't fuck it up like the first one. Less retarded scenes, Mr. Bay, please.
  • Alpha Trion
    That is sad....
even the director says it was a "" dumb f...ing robot movie ""
" Nobody had any faith in the movie "
I can tell by the way they made it...they didn't care..
Even the blockbuster action sences sucked due to 1 second editing, shaky cam, and close ups.
700$ B.O most watched Superbowl trailer= Most overrated movie ever made?
  • I always used to think Bay was a douche because that was the general consensus. But after listening to the Transformers 1 commentary and how he didn't stop rolling camera when the mexican police force ordered him to my mind was changed.

"“The robots have much more personality.” - Which was a common fan complaint of the first film. Bay blamed the technology, but now says"

fans wanted more personality from the robots?? they are huge alien robots how much personality do they have to show...

i just hope 95% of the Transformers 2 dialog isn't played for comedy like the first one.
  • Also...Michael Bay is the new Chuck Norris...
  • But as we've learned he is a goddamn liar.
  • can't wait for this movie, say what you want about michael bay but the dude knows how to make mindless action movies
  • Love his movies, but he's a doosh. I mean, he wasn't serious through the whole interview. The interviewer would try to ask a question, and Bay would interupt and say a lame joke or talk about a different subject. I don't think he knows how to do an inteview. Good director, though.
  • The ad that pic is from is hilarious. Makes me laugh every time.
  • im hoping for the best with this film, especially if its darker.
  • Michael Bay is such a hacker and a douche-bag. I can't stand him.
  • filmkid
micheal bay aint a hacker and a douche-bag u got him mixed up with Brett Ratner
  • i'll give him douche bag, but hes a douchebag who knows how to blow shit up
  • "When you're filming, you're thinking "I'm shooting a dumb fucking robot movie".

It's that delicate handling of the source material that makes people realize Michael Bay is just a dumb fucking director who shouldn't be allowed to have free license with people's favorite childhood show or anywhere near a film set.
  • agreed.
  • Awsome interview! kept me there the full 5 minutes! im looking forward to this movie
    and to answer his question

what did you wanna bring to the sequel that you couldnt in the first? more explosions
  • of course it will be, the first one made tons of money so why wouldn't the second one be way bigger?
  • Solid
I love bay and I don't care who thinks he's wrong for transformers. This is what he was born to do. Unfortunately the script for the last movie was crappy. Usually I'm open minded to anything even if it's crap, but even I have to admit the whole thing just felt hollow in the end. so I'm glad to hear there's more focus on the autobots' characters this time. The last movie gave us too much human crap that we didn't need. Now let's get to know the robos.
  • That was a video about how awesome Micheal Bay thinks he is.
  • As long as the climax of the film doesn't involve a cube of some sort being shoved into anything this time.
  • optimusprime
Cool interview. I don't have a problem him taking some time off after TF2.
  • I think he should make Bad Boys 3 in his spare time.
  • optimusprime
That would be cool, but I don't know if he is interesting in Bad Boys, since he said Transformers is his baby now. But I would like him doing another project before Transformers 3 even if is not Bad Boys 3.
  • Eric R.
I agree as well, I know when I go to one of his movies I'll be entertained. Its not like he's my best friend or anything, I don't want to know the person, I just want to know my $10 going in to the movie wasn't wasted.
  • Spence
He comes across like a total doofus.

Guys who laugh so much at their own (lame) jokes are insecure in the extreme.
  • joshi38
Say what you want about Bay, the man knows how to give an interesting interview.

Frankly, people call him a hack director, but the man knows how to entertain and that's the fundamental reason I go to the cinema. If I want my movie to make me think about things or give great insight into something, I'll see movies by other directors, but if I just want to be entertained I'll go for Bay.
  • he's a showman, that's for sure. I don't take him seriously and never will.
  • joshi38
I don't think he expects many people to take him seriously, he only expects people to buy tickets... and that's just what they do.
  • Eric R.
That's true Joshi, if people are looking for a hack director they can call Ratner any day.
  • jason B
    dammit i can't wait!!!

the 'darker' aspect, really makes me worry about what is gonna happen to optimus prime. these are his films, but i worry about his fate.
  • One of my favorite things in the world is watching Michael Bay be himself. You may not like his movies but he's a DIRECTOR in the truest sense of the word.
  • i totally agree with you. there's a place for filmmakers like michael bay.
  • I'm looking forward to Transformers 2 just to see which direction they take it in. I find it interesting that Bay is talking it up as 'epic' and 'darker'. Get these things wrong and he may not need to come back for a third film. Bad Boys 3 could still happen!! Lord knows Martin Lawrence will sign on.
  • oh ive been waiting for bad boys 3 for a looong time nwo
  • I like Michael Bay, I don't understand why everyone hates him. Sure, his movies aren't deep and full of things like "plot" or "depth", but I've never gotten to the end of a Michael Bay movie and said "That was boring, it was just not enjoyable..." Plus, the way he handles himself and his "craft"; you get the feeling he's the epitome of bad ass, the Avatar of face-punching awesome.
  • Mecline
Just to add to that wagon, I agree 100%. I think people just hate him for his personality and somehow think that means his movies are bad. Its like Tom Cruise, people can complain all they want about his beliefs in Scientology and what a doucher he is, but his acting skill is still on the top of its game. Sure Bay doesn't write deep or probing films, but he never makes any claims that those are his movies, unlike a lot of other directors who go deep and just end up looking pretentious.

Yes Richard Kelly, I'm looking at you.
  • Definitely, Bay does make some fun movies to go see...
  • SkycaF14
That was a good interview... lots of info, and off the cuff... really looking forward to the movie!
  • abcdefg
love the choice of picture. Never get old lol
