I’ll admit, I’ve been a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme ever since I saw Bloodsport as a kid. While his career and personal life have had their ups and downs over the years, I always hoped that he would somehow make a comeback as a legitimate action star. JCVD showed that he still has some on-screen charisma left, though it still wasn’t enough to redeem his action credibility. I figured a project like Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action extravaganza, The Expendables, would be perfect for him—but apparently Van Damme thinks otherwise.

In a recent interview with Total Film magazine, JC explains why he turned down a role in the film:

“Stallone gave me a part in his next movie,” he told us. “But I ask him about the subject, about the story.”

“He said, ‘You’re gonna make lots of money.’ I don’t want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character.  He was unable to tell what it’s going to be.”

“[Stallone said:] ‘You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.’ [So I said:] ‘Sly, what is my character?’ So I didn’t do the movie.”

So it seems in addition to learning how to be a dramatic actor, Van Damme also acquired “standards”. While his work in JCVD was good, I don’t think anybody is going to be hounding after him for any major dramatic roles. Action was his bread and butter, and the sooner he attaches himself to a film drenched in baddassery like this, the sooner he’ll get his career back on track.

The Expendables also stars Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Ben Kingsley, and his Bloodsport co-star, Forest Whitaker. While I applaud Van Damme for asking about character first, this is exactly the sort of film where the action stars need only be themselves, and plot is a distant afterthought. Stallone made Rambo an entertaining action film with a crappy plot, terrible dialog, and annoying characters. Somehow, I think this film will be even harder to screw up.

Discuss: Do you have any lingering attachment to Jean-Claude Van Damme? Is there anyone else that should be cast in The Expendables, thereby creating an even greater singularity of awesome?

  • Brian Rodden
    Bloodsport fucking rules.
  • pangloss
man van damme would have been awesome in this. he is totally fucking up all the credibility JCVD gave him. he needs to be in something that doesn't go straight to dvd. fuck i would love to see JC return to the mainstream...
  • I like Van Damn but turning Stallone down is out right stupid! Sly would only make him look good.

    chuck
  • I REALLY need to see JCVD, i've been hearing how amazing it is.
  • ATOLOCUS
Standards my ass. Van Damme must still be on drugs to pass up an opportunity to work in this. Van Damme and action are done, PROFESSIONALLY.
  • If Schwarzenegger wasn't Governor, I'd like to see him in the movie.

Van Damme was awesome back in the day but doesn't realize that he won't have too many roles in the future. It is nice to see he's not looking for a quick buck, but he did make a big mistake by not being in this film.
  • JCVD
    JOHN LOCKE!!!!!!!!
  • Dammit JCVD would have made this movie even greater than it's going to be. This movie now needs Jesse The Body Ventura, Carl Weathers, and Steven Segal to complete the badassness that is The Expendables
  • i really doubt stallone said that. not a single one of van dammes roles have any character to them. Stallone on the other hand wrote Rocky (he also won the oscar for bestscreenplay) and rewrote most of First Blood. Van damme is miserable. I would rather he ask Dennis Rodman to be in expendables.
  • Network_fanlolLL
No he didn't. He was nominated, but Paddy Chayefsky won for Network.
  • what an awesome pic! what film is that from?
  • Looks like Hard Target, John Woo's first American film. I believe he has a bit of a fight scene with that snake.
  • Even awesomer if you know that he punched the snake in the face first for trying to bite his girlfriend.
  • [A]
Awww Van Damme is nitpicky.. What. The. F**k.
  • Who does he think he is, Mickey Rourke!?!?
  • filmkid
Van Damme should of took the role this movie would of bring him back on the big screen once again. look at the cast of actors for this movie, he should of said yes we need a good action flick with the old school action star plus the new breed join force to kick some ass.

bad move JCVD but i still love bloodsport and kickboxer
  • I see it from both viewpoints. On one had he is making a bad decision because this movie is going to get a theatrical release and he could have used that. On the other hand he is trying to shake the "im just a action guy" stereotype. Personally I would have jumped into the role but I can see why he turned it down.

BUT this movie will be badass and I am looking forward to it.
  • If they can through Vin Diesel in this movie, they'll have just about every badass action hero ever. Well except for Arnold of course
  • you never know Bruce Willis and Arnold could make cameos
  • marz
i dont know..mars attacks had a huge group of a-list actors and look how crapy THAT movie turned out to be.he may have picked the right choice but we wont know till it comes out.if sly didn't tell him about the character, maybe it's a 'joke' character.someone who's made fun of..like a parody of an action star and sly couldn't tell him that.i dont know.i kind of wanna see the script.
  • I liked Mars Attacks...
  • Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson anyone?
  • yes i agree with you. He would be perfect for this film.
  • dannyboy
lets add Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the hit list for this film too
  • Prat
woah, this movie has an awesome cast..
  • I want to see Van Damme's friend and stunt double actor Todd David Senofonte in the Expendables!
  • This could be one decision he regrets in the future. At least sign on, do the film, get back on the screen, let people see you and remember you, THEN fail at being a dramatic actor. Promptly realize action was your bread and butter and quickly ramp up Bloodsport II. Oh, wait...
  • he made a wrong choice
  • Van Damme most likely didn't hear from Stallone that he was going to be the star...theres a reason he does low budget and mostly crappy movies...because he gets his name first on the title...it comes to down to ego...and considering all the actors involved have swallowed their pride and understand they're making a cool action film...Van Damme yet again makes a critical mistake would could have put him back in the spotlight for a couple of months

  • Definitely the wrong film to turn down on principle. Even people who avoid typical action movies won't be able to turn away from the names involved in this thing. It's a shame, really.
  • ATLianz
They call him Nuk Soo Kow, white guy with standards!
  • GlenJM
I'll wait to see which project Jean-Claude choose next before I get upset. I saw JCVD earlier tonight, and it was astounding! I can understand his hesitance, but man, it would have been PERFECT to have him in there.
  • the opening of JCVD with the one camera shot is absolutely amazing... i was like woah. that must have taken some super choreography. but i hope this doesn't come back to bite him in the ass.
  • opening weekend of The Expendibles, JCVD will be eating his own dick.

    dumbass.
  • Geet
Maybe cause Rourke is on it that he didn't do it. I mean didn't they have some kind of altercation a long time ago while filming Double Team with Dennis Rodman? I heard Rourke kicked his ass.
  • sa c
    so- what was his character?
  • Enthropii
I preferrede Van Damme in Street Fighter as compared to the Chun Li crap we're gonna get...

  • Man, I loved Bloodsport as a kid. Even though JCVD doing the splits between two chairs in his underwear was very disturbing.
  • kickboxer is far superior to bloodsport
  • yes this is true, an excellent movie. They should have never made sequels.
  • the scene where he splits the guy's shin apart is permanently embedded in my childhood memories.

    i loved that movie.
  • It's a little disappointing that he's not doing the Stallone film...I think Stallone should still write him in there, and let him read the script or whatever...I've never been a huge Jean-Claude fan, but JCVD was all sorts of awesome.
  • Still, if you can't even say who your character is, it's probably best to not take it along. Van Damme is no Day Lewis, but it's nice to see he has at least some standards.

    Also, didn't like Rambo.
  • gah
Ah man, that's hillarious. I can't wait to see what role he actually does take considering he's become picky all of a sudden. Something tells me there's more to this story than Van Dammes version.
  • Brad
    Still recovering from Street Fighter.
  • Here's a man who starred in Double Team: a film which co-starred Dennis Rodman.

    FREAKIN DENNIS RODMAN.....WITH GREEN HAIR!
  • i'm a bit confused. Was he aware that all these other great actors would be in the film when he said no? I understand he cares about his role, but this sounds like a kick-ass cast for a kick-ass action movie.

maybe he DID know, and was instead afraid that his role would be too minor?

I could see it both ways.
  • Maybe Stallone finally told him that his character is minor and is killed off after a few round house kicks to the face.
