As you probably already know, Danny Elfman will be providing the score for Terminator Salvation. At past events, director McG had mentioned that he at once point was considering having Radiohead, or more specifically front man Thom Yorke provide some score for the film. For some reason or another, the idea just never came to fruition.

But according to The Playlist, McG sounded a lot more hopefully about the idea during his appearance at the New York Comic Con over the weekend. Actually, he says that if it happens, it would be a collaboration between Yorke and Academy Award-winning Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, 21 Grams, Brokeback Mountain).

“We talked about Gustavo getting together with Thom Yorke from Radiohead which I thought would be very interesting.,” McG said. “And they may still do a couple of sounds for the movie.”

I love how every step of the way McG is “casting up” and trying to lure top talent, reguardless of their relation to the concept of a Hollywood blockbuster. As much as I like Gustavo’s film work, I’ve never been a fan of Yorke (which I’m sure will lose me points from the alt-indie crowd). Personally, I’ve always believed that Johnny Greenwood was the genius behind Radiohead, and I think he could provide something a lot more closer to the machine/computer sounds that a Terminator film might require.

I agree with utilizing Johnny Greenwood here, his soundtrack to There Will Be Blood was astounding.
  • It certainly does sound like McG is trying to reel in all the big names for his project
  • I think "trying" is the right word. It seems like he's using the media to lobby these talented people into working with him. I wonder if he's even talked to them because, to me, it sounds like some crazy concept he pulled out of his head just before stepping in front of the crowd.

By the way, this movie is supposed to come out this summer, right? Shouldn't the bulk of the composition work be close to done by now? I've been skeptical of this movie since I heard about it, but this really sends up some red flags for me.
  • as a somewhat proud member of the "depressed indie crowd", i don't think this would be all that great. i love me some Radiohead, and Greenwood's done some amazing stuff, but i don't think the collaboration would be that great.
  • gah
"depressed indie crowd"? hahahhahahaha. So you love Radiohead yet this still somehow sounds like a bad idea to you? WTF? Last time Yorke lended his single off his solo album to Linklater's Scanner Darkly it was a match made in heaven.
  • Stark1288
Last time Radiohead lended their song to a movie was Twilight... was that a match made in heaven too?
  • yes, i love Radiohead. A Scanner Darkly even sounds like it could be a Radiohead tribute band, so its not surprising that that collaboration was so awesome. this, however, is a summer action tentpole movie. doesn't seem like Yorke's music really fits.
  • Yeah it sounds like it could be good but just not for this project. Like I said down below, I'll have to wait to hear something in order to give an honest opinion.
  • Ash Williams
Gustavo Santaolla an argentinian like me :) Good for him and for Terminator 4.
McG is really trying to do a good movie In the deep of his mind, he know's that the Charlie's Angels saga are shitty movies but it's gonna prove to all us that he can be a good director. I really hope that he can prove to all of us that we are wrong.
  • Anything Thom Yorke creates does not belong on Terminator 4. Simple as that.
  • Thom Yorke can make good music Peter, just listen to The Eraser.

This does sound like it could be something good, but not really for this movie. I guess I just don't see it. Well I'll wait til I hear something to actually make a judgment.
  • gah
If this comes true, which i'm skeptical, McG often talks out of his ass (remember when Cameron "blessed" this project?) I guarantee you it would work really, really well. Prepare to be proven wrong my friend.
  • No what I said is that it could work, just not for a Terminator film. I would love to see Thom collaborate with a ton of other people, especially people who score movies for a living.
  • I listened to Yorke's solo album, and didn't like it much. I know, I must not have any musical taste then, right? :P
  • Nah, I'm happy you gave me your honest opinion. I think otherwise because it really is a great solo effort.

Radiohead's music isn't just for the depressed indie crowd by the way.
  • Isaiah Everin
I will toss my hat in with another "You don't know anything about Thom Yorke" comment. Johnny isn't the genius behind Radiohead whatsoever. As Landfill said, Yorke produced a brilliant album independently that wasn't even "depressed indie," and revealed how much his own developing style influenced Radiohead.

They're an amazing compilation of artists, and not one person is responsible for what they produce. That's why they're so good. Thom Yorke is an awesome lyricist and musician.

That being said, he's way too good to be seen helping in this ridiculous production. He would lose some of my respect if he did it, and since he'd never do it for the money, I'd have to wonder exactly what would compel him to.
  • When Radiohead okayed their song to be used in the credits to Twilight, they lost the ability to claim that they would only lend their music to quality products :P
  • gah
It was in Twilight???? WHAT??? I did not know that, and that is really depressing.
  • Eric
That was the only good thing about that movie. That and my girlfriend snuggling up next to me. w00t for lifting arm rests.
  • It's not on the official soundtrack so Radiohead can't be at fault for being nice for lending a song. They let whoever owns twilight to use it for half of the credits.
  • Radiopays
    They still

#1 allowed their song to be used on in a vastly subpar product
#2 made money of the music rights for the usage of the song.
  • #1 Most likely a friend of their asked if they could use the song for the closing credits, so they let their friend use it, but not to make money off of.

#2 They aren't about making money, just ask the people that bought In Rainbows for under a dollar as a digital download.

Radiohead is my favorite band and that pissed me off to no end.
  • same here!
  • i dont think peter realized how many of his readers are yorke fans
  • Nope, I realized. I just didn't think they would have a hissy fit. Thought radiohead fans would be cooler than that :P
  • I am pumped for this to tell you the truth.
  • True, but his style doesn't fit with everything. I love Radiohead and Yorke's solo work, but this might not be the best match.
  • Mike D 37
I agree. Johnny Greenwood is the genius behind the band. And his style would be much more suited for a Terminator film, at-least conceptually. I'm sure there much be a part of the film that could use Yorke's moving vocals, but I'd rather have Greenwood anyday.
  • most that say jonny is the genius behind the band really have no idea what he does in each song. i'm not saying you don't...i'm saying i doubt peter does :p
  • Also, I have removed the offending "depressing" comment from the post, please, lets keep this on topic about if Yorke/Santaolalla would be a good addition to the T4 soundtracks or not, and not my music tastes.
  • Thanks Peter. If they did make some kind of music for the movie, it would be good, but I wish it was for some other movie beside a Terminator movie.

Oh yeah, you guys make sure you catch Thom and Radiohead tonight on the Grammys.
  • Thanks Peter. If they did make some kind of music for the movie, it would be good, but I wish it was for some other movie beside a Terminator movie.

Oh yeah, you guys make sure you catch Thom and Radiohead tonight on the Grammys.

    Alt-indie, gotta love it.
  • Thanks for agreeing with me. Radiohead is a group effort, not just one or two of the members. They all come together to make a great sound in order to make music that they enjoy. Thom's solo album was good and he is able to make good music by himself.
  • very well said
  • Isaiah Everin
Well, Yorke is a great electronic musician. I would be pissed off at him if he helped in this production though. Selling a song for credits is completely different than producing music solely for the purpose of a film.
  • Isaiah Everin
Meaning, if "electronic" is the way this film is going, that's his forte.
  • Kiki C.
Why would you be pissed off? Film music can be really great. It takes a lot of talent to be able to write it. It's more challenging than writing an album because it plays such a crucial role in movies. Great film score can greatly enhance a movie. You make it seem like musicians should only write music for albums.
  • Isaiah Everin
No, I'm saying this because Terminator is a hack, commercial franchise, and not something that it seems Yorke would associate himself with, what with his promoting musicians to not sign with record labels and giving away music for free.
  • TwilightLovesRadio
#1 Stephanie, the author of Twilight is a big Radiohead fan and begged them. They did get paid for the song.

#2 In Rainbows internet sale was a marking gimmick, and it worked incredibly well. The dividends from offering the cd for free will pay off in album sales and live concert ticket sales. Radiohead isn't stupid.
  • I'll agree with you that making music is kind of a business but the reason why Radiohead went independent is because they no longer felt that they needed a record label to make great music. Oh yeah, also on the fact that Radiohead isn't stupid.

I wasn't sure why they would allow Twilight a song for the closing credits until now. I had no idea the author of Twilight loved Radiohead.
  • i dont think you realized how many of your readers are yorke fans hehe
  • exit music is a good example radiohead writing an amazing song for a not so amazing film
  • Talk Show Host is another great song by them. It wasn't written specifically for a movie but was used heavily in Romeo + Juliet.
  • kickass.
  • tommy up
McG stands for McGuffin, he pulls this shit outta his ass.
  • Eh? Even though Radiohead beats the living soul out of every man, woman, and child, they're not what I'd expect in a Terminator movie. If this movie turns out to be really good, I'll eat my own tie.
  • what the helll? Gustavo is a genius and he's not a proper composer for a such film.
ps. and yeah radiohead is sooo overrrated
  • Isaiah Everin
The word "overrated" is what's overrated. It doesn't even mean anything. "The Muppets are sooo overrated. Breakfast cereal is sooo overrated. Anything I don't like that lots of other people do is sooo overrated."
  • saying overrated i mean that lots of ppl consider Thom Yourke some kinf god. i can't undersyand that: he's just a talented musician. not genius, not something unique
