McG stopped by the New York Comic Con panel to discuss some Terminator Salvation footage and field questions from fans. While he discussed some topics already covered at the San Diego Comic Con last year, there was also quite a bit of new info, in addition to a bit of hilarity due to Bale’s recent antics.

Before we saw the footage, McG spent a lot of time on the defensive trying to justify this movie’s existence. He mentioned chatting with James Cameron about this project, but stops short of saying that Cameron gave the film any sort of particular blessing. From the way he described, it seems more like Cameron basically wished him well as professional courtesy. Given that this project is so far along, I’m surprised McG still feels the need to defend it so much.

He also mentioned Danny Elfman’s work on the score—something which I’m actually a bit worried about. While Elfman is still a better than average composer, none of his scores in the past decade have been all that great in my opinion (and anyone who brings up Spiderman will be flogged). McG confirmed that they have the series’ previous composer, Brad Fiedel, approval on using some of themes, but that’s to be expected at this point.

I was more interested in the news that Thom Yorke and Gustavo Santaollala would be contributing some tunes to the film, mainly because I’m sure that sound would be far more interesting than Elfman’s increasingly generic tendencies. And for the record, I agree with Peter’s comments on that news—Johnny Greenwood would have been an even better choice for the film’s sound.

We were then shown several minutes of footage from the film, with a mixture of complete and various degrees of incomplete shots. Some of the footage was repeated from the trailers already released, but among the new stuff there was quite a bit to get excited about. Most interesting to me was the generous inclusion of Michael Ironside who plays General Ashdown, leader of the human resistance. As we all know when it comes to Ironside, the more the better—and it looks like his character is the sort of hardass he’s known to play so well. McG made it know that Ashdown isn’t the sort of character that’s going to hand over leadership of the resistance to a so-called prophet very easily, and that John Connor will spend much of the film trying to prove himself.

Throughout the rest of the footage we get a glimpse at some of the larger action scenes which definitely cover territory we haven’t yet seen in the Terminator series (but still don’t seem all that original when compared to other films), and some longer scenes of Bale as John Connor. We see a longer version of his face-to-face monologue with a Terminator, and several scenes with Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese.

It also seemed strange to me that McG would even dare show some of the very early CG work in this preview footage simply because we didn’t gain anything by seeing it, and the footage also works against his so-called focus on practical effects. The completed CG work appeared as seemless as any big-budget film these days, but we’ll need a longer and closer look at these special effects to determine how well they actually work.

After the footage was shown, McG opened the floor up for a Q&A session—which led to some hilarious situations given Bale’s recent antics. Some slightly spoilery highlights include:

  • The first question dealt directly with Bale’s blowup, which McG explained as an unfortunate event but one that was resolved on the same day of shooting.
  • In terms of continuity the film will be mostly informed by the Cameron films, but they will still follow T3’s timeline for Judgement Day and other events. He mentioned the film doesn’t reach 2033, the year John Connor supposedly dies.
  • They won’t be following any continuity from the television show simply because it’s too difficult to work in that show’s numerous plotlines.
  • The second time someone asked about Bale’s blowup he responded loudly with “What don’t you fucking understand?!” I’m pretty sure the person who asked that question crapped their pants.
  • He was vaguely non-commital about a Sarah Connor appearance in the film, but if I had to guess based on his response I wouldn’t be surprised if we see her in the film in something more than a photo.

Overall, I can confirm what many have said about McG after this panel: He’s a very engaging guy who knows what he needs to do to get us excited about this film, especially given his track record as a director. I can report that his enthusiasm and devotion to the film seems genuine, the only question is if his talents will measure up. Judging from the footage we saw the film already looks far more epic than T3, but it remains to be seen if it will reach the heights of Cameron’s films.

  • Thom Yorke !!! F-Off... MY heart just broke, and PEOPLE THIS DOESN'T MAKE MC Director Credable!
  • Cool read!
  • I might be the only person who feels this way but after watching the first Terminator film recently... that movie is not holding up well. T2 is still phenomenal but the original really struggles to be cool nowadays. This movie really only needs to worry about reaching the same level as T2.
  • Which would be pretty much impossible.
  • I'm just gonna say this even though I'm sure many will feel that I deserve to be shunned over it: Terminator sucked. I've never liked it, it always sucked and it always will suck. I chock this up to making Arnold the bad guy. I simply did not appreciate his presence as anything less than the ridiculously muscular heartwarming robot who learns silly half spanish, half english slang phrases from the nineties. He's just not believable otherwise... He needs to be lovable, otherwise fuck him, you know?
Terminator 2 is the shit. So, there's still that, I guess.

While shunning is a bit far, I feel the need to put in that while T1 may not have been the eye candy smorgasbord that T2 was, it is still a good introduction to a sweet series. The dialogue is solid and it presented the idea's in a well thought out, methodical way. To dismiss a movie mainly because an actor you love isn't cast in the way you want him to be is a bit much, especially when he's kicking all kinds of ass and taking names. I'll always love T2 and it definatly is one of the best action films ever made, but T1 just feels so very authentically Sci-Fi.
  • I guess this is good news that McG is very much wanting to please fans and make a good film. It also sounds like we are going to get a few nods to the old movies which is a good thing.
  • sounds like McG is trying to suck too many fans dicks and promising too much.

i want this to be badass though.
  • Yeah, but think about it... If McG sucks enough fan dick in this movie, then if the movie comes out and it's good, then fans will suck his dick. Profit. Reciprocation. Dignity.
  • Mecline
You sir, are a words smith, kudos.
  • Im just hoping the movies not a stinker, i'll stay optimistic.
  • As a fan of good movies, I can only hope this delivers. But as far as Thom Yorke is concerned, don't get too excited, lest we forget Billy Corgan contributed to the soundtrack for Stigmata. D:

I also attended the panel and wanted to add my two cents on a couple of points:

    1. McG's insecurity seemed very puzzling to say the least. Before and after showing the clips he said that while the movie was deep into editing, he intended to make changes in the film based on the crowd's response and feedback (e.g., more plot vs. more action). Of course, this was a pretty empty gesture as due to the nature of the clips no real substantive feedback could be given (which is usually the case with respect to these clip reels).

    2. McG not only defended the merits of making a third sequel, but also his entire directorial career. Basically, he said he didn't know better or have much choice in making the Charlie's Angels movies, whereas We Are Marshall was his way of coping with his fear of flight.

    3. Stranger still was his complaint about not being taken seriously due to being called McG, explaining that he had no choice in the matter (he was the third Joe in the family, so they nick named him instead, using his mother's maiden name). And I have to say -- McG, grow up; it's not like your friends and family made the studios use "McG" in the credits to all your works. (As an aside, throughout his rant I wanted to shout "how many capital letters are in McG?")

    4. McG wanted to make an "unplanned" call to Bale and have the crowd give a big shout out. To my surprise the call turned out to indeed be unplanned and instead of Bale McG only got Bale's wife. So I guess next time McG may want to confirm in advance that Bale is at least around at the relevant time.
  • Haha that phone call was hilariously awkward :)
  • Palmer
Well, at least McG is being light hearted about the whole Bale blow up thing. And not get frustrated by it. Also, Spider-Man.
  • I went in to the panel as a McG basher, but I have to admit he addressed a lot of the things I dislike about him head on. His level of talent definitely remains to be seen, but I left with a bit more respect for the guy. The footage made me optimistic. It definitely takes itself seriously.
  • gah
    Spider-man.
  • GregoryV
Magnus the Robot Fighter should be in this film.
  • I want more footage from this film, any news on when we will see another teaser or trailer.
  • Haha, I've just got this image of a McG making a reporter weep into their own notepad after shouting at them over the Bale fiasco! Hopefully we'll get some bootleg or released footage (crossed fingers) online from the Con soon.
  • Waitwaitwait...how is John Connor not the leader of the human resistance? Uh...didn't Reese go on and say that Connor taught them how to fight back, how to storm the electrical fences?

Is this another Yoda was my master but Qui-Gon taught me retro-fit?
  • yes, that's what Reese said in the first movie.
  • The way McG explained it was that Ashdown was a guy with tons of military experience, and he sort of became the leader due to all of that. When this movie starts John Connor is unproven, and it would be foolish to assume everyone would follow him just because he says he's the savior of humanity.
  • I must say, something about that plot line as you have just stated it has me very intrigued. I, until recently, had assumed that Connor would be in charge at the start of the flick. I love a good rising to power story.
  • I'm still really excited about seeing this film. As I am about The SCC starting this friday!

this hack is the one responsible for some of the worst movies of all time: Charlie's Angels 1 & 2.

he rightfully should be defending anything he's "directing" for the rest of his life.
  • I really wish they never did the TV show. The TV show has ruined the cool, mysterious aura of Terminator. now i'm just like "meh, I can watch this on TV every week."
  • There's always the choice not to watch it. Which it seems like you're invoking. We that do recognize it's a great show will continue to watch. Terminator, imo, is not a flawless property that one season of a great tv show is going to ruin. My opinion anyway.
  • BFFredo
From what the first movie says, the reason humanity follows John Connor is because he is the one who showed them how to fight back and united them to do so.

Sounds like McG is retrofitting the whole thing. Meaning what we heard from Reese was more along the lines of mythmaking.

Btw I forgive McG because he, if nothing else, gave us Supernatural.
  • Just a guy
Ashdown is way too close to Assclown. Then again, it's McG, no surprise.
  • skippy
this sounds EXACTLY like what Jonathan Mostow said during his panel at Comic Con promoting/defending "Terminator 3".

he went through the whole "James Cameron blessing" thing and the "making it for the fans" and "i'm a huge fan, too" and "trust me, it'll blow you away." the difference was that at least he had Arnold. i guess.
  • I didn't know that. I guess we can only compare the two once this one finally comes out. I will say that this one looks alot better than the last one just from the images and trailers I've seen.
  • skippy
i have to agree with "angrybroomstick" about the world being a better place without the TV show.

i couldn't stand the smell of a cow being milked to death before the release of T3, but now the stench is unbearable. the way the rights to the Terminator franchise have been bought and sold and passed around makes it another hollywood whore, used and abused.

    [i'm not bitter]
  • Abused, really? As far as I know there have been 3 movies and 1 season of a tv show. If the show wasn't at the quality it is I might agree. Expansions usually fare far worse in quality. I'd add that this adds to the universe, official or not, since it's story/drama heavy. Letting you really feel the emotions of the Connor family and the other people touched by them. Let's not forget Summer Glau is fantastic.
  • skippy
[2 respected films, a 3D themepark attraction, a third movie that should never have been made, a bastard stepchild of a TV series, and a fourth in-progress movie that at best will probably land somewhere between "it didn't suck" and "at least it wasn't as bad as T3"]

i would rate the TV show higher if it wasn't connected in any way to the Terminator mythos. it was obvious the writers/producers were grasping for anything to forcibly continue the story, even at the expense of the established universe. the characters were constantly contradicting and betraying their existing backstories and motivations: John Connor in the show was such a whiny little shit, consistently endangering himself, his family, and the entire human race for the stupidest of reasons; Sarah Connor must have completely forgotten all the hard time she spent in the mental hospital and her years of training with guerilla/army dudes because she turned into such a tender "tough love" soccer mom - the complete opposite of her previous psycho-bitch, save-John-at-ALL-costs characterization). That was not the Connor family as previously depicted.

and, i'll respectfully vote "nay" on your "Let's not forget Summer Glau is fantastic" comment. but at least she wasn't as bad as Shirley Manson's character... yech.
  • that's cool... i'm really really excited for this movie.

I have a hunch Salvation WILL be dissapointing. Why? You cant make an end of the world apocalyptic movie where humans are being exterminated and make it PG-13. That is so stupid. They are trying to make a movie using an R rated plot and delute it using PG elements. That is like trying to do a hardcore porn movie rated R. It just doesent make sense and no one watching will be satisfied. I am tired of watching all these PG-13 mediocre movies where the action falls short because the studio doesent want to put any violence that could offend minors and hope they can fill all available seats in the theaters.
