Brett Ratner to Direct Youngblood

Reliance Big Entertainment has aquired the rights to make a big screen film adaptation of Robb Liefeld’s comic book series Youngblood with Brett Ratner attached to direct. Ick. Ratner explained to Variety that “Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left” that is available for the Rat to ruin… He didn’t say that end part obviously. But anyone that has seen Rush Hour 3 knows, that’s clearly what he meant. The project is being fast tracked.

When I was collecting/reading comic books during the big comic boom of the early 1990’s, Image Comics was all the rage and Youngblood was one of the top titles. I never could get into it beyond the cool larger-than-life art.  Youngblood was a high-profile super-team sanctioned and overseen by the United States Government. At the time of its release, Youngblood #1 was the highest selling independent comic book ever, but according to wikia.com, Youngblood was criticized for poor writing and inconsistent art, but mostly for its lateness. So maybe the title is pefect for Ratner after all. You can buy the first volume of the series in hardcover on Amazon for around $25.

  • Well, that's it Chris Nolan. Move over.

TDK is obviously about to be dethroned.
  • gah
For those non-comic book fans on the site, it should be pointed out that Rob Liefeld the creator of Youngblood is largely considered to be the "Brett Ratner of the Comic book industry" in that many feel that he's a complete hack and hated by most fanboys.
  • Palmer
His Captain America is an abomination....though I don't hate him as much as I hate Greg Land.....god I hate those porn faces. Anyways, when you're dealing with Brett Ratner you're automatically dealing with crap.
  • I totally, agree. Youngblood was crap. Maybe Ratner won't be able to ruin something that was already a steaming pile to begin with.
  • Way to go Ratner, you're hear to ruin another comic book movie.
  • Jeff L.
How can you ruin something that's already shit?
  • Is Brett Ratner ever going to make a good movie?
  • Daniel
    Red Dragon? Rush Hour 1?
  • why hollywood why
brett ratner is a terrible director. why does he keep getting work?
  • because for some reason, people go to see his movies. doesn't X3 have the biggest Memorial Day opening ever or something like that? i know it did at the time.
  • why hollywood why
it seems that he has incredible luck as he latches onto movies that are successful and directs sequels to them (the first rush hour and x men 1,2). i hope this is because he works for snickerdoodles because any other reason wouldnt make sense
  • sorry
    he directed rush hour
  • yeah man, he directed the first rush hour. but that franchise was shit from the get go, so i'll give you that one.

he also got his grubby mitts on the hanibal story. that was not pretty.
  • Yes. X3 got play because for some reason Singer's first two tragic attempts were such big successes.
  • kris
Yeah!! We need another crap-tastic movie. Cause there are not enough crappy comic-book movies.
  • i'm going to be optimistic. thank god Watchmen and Sin City were made without this hacks involvement.
  • Its a trifecta of shit
  • I thought Ratner did a good job on Red Dragon UNTIL I saw the original Manhunter(the first Hannibal film) and realized that almost everything interesting about Red Dragon was directly lifted, shot for shot, from Manhunter. So as far as I'm concerned Michael Mann directed Red Dragon.

But funny enough I don't hate X3 like everyone else does so maybe this fucking hack can pull it off.
  • Bravo, I was thinking the same thing.
  • They ARE the same because both of them are based on the same book!
  • Yeah but they weren't working off the same script with the exact same stage direction. If your gonna take that much from the original film why even remake it?
  • I'd say that's the studio's fault.
They would've wanted a 'safe' money maker, and so got a director who would be willing to follow all their orders.
The same thing happened in the remake of 'The Producers'.
    I don't hate Brett Ratner, but I don't think he's a 'talent'.
  • Peter mele
youngblood is a horrible! ratner needs to stay focused and give us Harbinger, that title is genius and has the potential to redeem ratner.
  • Ratner seems a perfect match for Liefeld. Douche-hack combo

"When I was collecting/reading comic books during the big comic boom of the early 1990’s, Image Comics was all the rage and Youngblood was one of the top titles. I never could get into it beyond the cool larger-than-life art." -- then you grew up and -hopefully- realized Image Comics art was terrible
  • GregoryV
As long the Rat doesn't touch Harbinger I'm happy. Besides, I can't even imagine what Youngblood would look like on screen.
  • wow, Hollywood is sure obsessed with shitty superhero movies.
  • Alright stop!
    Everyone hate and start hissin'
The Rat is back with a brand new edition....

All I got to say is:
    They kill horses don't they?
  • Like Jeff L. said, Youngblood is lame to begin with. I'd rather the Rat direct this than anything else. Lesser of two evils.
  • Like Jeff L. said, Youngblood is lame to begin with, it was a rip off of every X-title Liefeld worked on. I'd rather the Rat direct this than anything else. Lesser of two evils.
  • Alright! Instead of destroying something we actually care about, Ratfink Ratner directing an adaptation of a comic everybody hates anyway. Let's pray this makes him too busy for Conan.

  • "Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and 'Youngblood' is one of the few comic books left with tentpole potential," Ratner told Variety.

What is Ratner talking about. There's plenty out there that are good. Then again, thank GOD he's not involved with anything good.
  • Weyland_Yutani
    Ratner is a clueless tool.
  • Woah... Lifefield works on crappy X-titles, leaves and creates said rip off. Ratner does crappy X-title in film form then does said rip off in film form. The world is a weird place.
  • It's a good news. He cannot direct Conan, no? Super cool. McTiernan, come back!
  • Crap comic + Crap Director = Match made in heaven.
  • Simon
Don't people who make movies ever watch movies? How does Ratner keep getting jobs?
  • Burt
    This will never get made.
  • filmkid
does this mean he wont direct GOD OF WAR. also guys the reason why X-Men 3 did well is because its X-Men most people loved X-Men 1 & 2 and people thought X-3 was going to be like the others but he failed on that
  • Dan SOLO!
Ratner & Liefeld mach made in heaven!!!
I hope Ratner stays faithfull to the comic... And here's how to do it!
    1. Everybody must jump hunched with their legs appart!
    2. Fucked up body proportions! Microscopic waists on the girls, 3 fingers on the hands ext.
    3. Don't want to see any feet in this movie!

    http://progressiveboink.com/archive/robliefeld.ht...

First Ratner movie I'm really looking forward to!
  • A part from 'Red Dragon' and 'Rush Hour', Ratner hasn't made anything remotely special or interesting in a good few years and seeing as I absolutely hated 'X-Men: The Last Stand', I have little faith in this project if it gets off the ground with Ratner at the helm.
  • Everyone has missed the big question: will Ratner give Youngblood better feet than Liefeld ever could?

Besides that, who cares? Youngblood was a crap book best known because it was one of the first Image books and because it took 5 months between issues.
  • they really are slumming it when it comes to this one.....although I liked when Chapel joined Spawn....why would they make this over a Wildcats film??...Ratner is perfect for this because nobody will watch it regardless... and this is project number what for Ratner?
  • Youngblood is one of my own creations that I am very proud to have been a part of.
  • This sounds like it could go straight to DVD. It won't be a hit at all.
  • BigBoi
LIEfeld was a douche BS artisit who conned people into supporting him but he always FAILED. His own partners kicked him out of the company he helped found, his artists quit on him, he's been sued more times than Michael Jckson and he draws like a 2 year-old niece. Today absolutely nobody remembers him except those forced to suffer his crap crowding valuable space on comic books shelves, and nobody in the industry wants anything to do with a talentless hack who was more famous for his crappy art than anything else.
As for the Rat he oughta be taken into the town square and made to commit an indecent public act with a man.
Wait, he already did that? Never mind.

There are no Youngblood fans. If they make it a movie they need to retitle it MASSIVE FAIL!
  • Ratner is as good at telling a compelling narrative as Liefeld is at drawing feet.
  • wmpp
I guess this begs the question. Can you ruin something that already kind of sucks?
  • edog
    Domino,

In all sincerity, that sums it up. Thanks!
