BBC has put a bunch of the acceptance speeches from the 2009 British Academy Film Awards on YouTube. I’ve included some of the highlights after the jump.

Heath Ledger wins Best Supporting Actor

Mickey Rourke wins Best Actor

Slumdog Millionaire wins Best Film

Danny Boyle wins Best Director

  • woot danny boyle is the man!!
  • WHsmith
who cares about all those hacks. the only guy that mattered at this BAFTA is Terry Gilliam, where's that clip? I hope he offended as many Hollywood big wigs as possible.
  • Mickey's speech was the best.
  • Rourke needs to win an Oscar just so we can hear his acceptance speech.
  • I agree! His speech at the Emmy's and this one have been great! I can't wait for the one at the Oscars....I really do hope he wins it.
  • Definitely!

    welcome back mickey!
  • Marc
And don't forget his speech at the Golden Globes. That one was great as well.
  • Whoops, I mean the Golden Globes, I dunno why I said Emmy's.
  • Mickey Rourke: Most hilarious speech ever.Mickey Rourke: Most hilarious speech ever.
  • WHsmith
Slumdog - most overrated film since Crash. In a year of so many overrated movies, it's the king. Clearly it will win all the Oscars
  • Zinc
Screw off, nobody likes your opinion.
  • gah
Agreed. Slumdog backlash has yet to fully set in, but I hope it hits in Juno proportions. It's weird, it usually takes a while after the Oscar ceremony before people start coming to their senses.
  • WHsmith
I hope Danny Boyle hooked up all the child actors still living in the slums with lottery tickets - they might have a harder time "living on love". The backlash has already hit Mumbai - where people are protesting this film in the streets. Exploitative, trite, insulting etc
  • Marc
Oh come on. There is not a single person protesting against the quality of the movie (and that would be pretty ridiculous to begin with. Just don't see it if you don't like it). According to the source I have a few people protested because they found the title humiliating:
"Referring to people living in slums as dogs is a violation of human rights," Tateshwar Vishwakarma, a social activist said.
I'm not a native speaker, but I always understood the title as a play on the word underdog. And since an underdog is not actually a dog this whole protesting is more a case of a misunderstanding ('lost in translation').
  • I'm protesting against the quality of the film.
  • Dice
Hell yeah, I'm protesting the quality of the movie. Contrived, overedited, noisome, embarrassingly amateurish, one-dimensional. How are we supposed to take a movie seriously when a cell phone rings fifty fecking times without going to voicemail in a crucial scene -- and conversely, how are we supposed to say "oh it's just a movie" when a kid is getting his eyes gouged out with a spoon. Pure garbage, offensively bad.
  • Oh my God. Seriously?
I will repeat what I said in the last Oscar-related post:
Do not take every post about the Academy Awards/this years crop of movies on this site as an opportunity to complain about what you don't agree with!
Stick to the topic of the post!
  • WHsmith
Excuse me? The topic was the BAFTA awards and who won them. What topic should I have stuck to? How awesome Slumdog and Danny Boyle are?
  • No but this is a post about the award speeches and you are just telling us that you don't like Slumdog Millionaire. That's good to know and all, but the topic isn't about who won, it's about the speeches. If you want to talk about who won, comment on the post that was before this...about the winners.
And maybe you yourself haven't been doing it on other posts, but there are TONS of people who just go on any post that relates to award shows and yells about a movie they don't like. And there are only a select few of said posts where that sort of opinion is really appropriate.
  • Marc
It's a magnificent movie. Maybe it's a little bit overrated, but the same applies for Benjamin Button and The Dark Knight. Overall it is the definitely best choice for Best Picture.
  • Holy shit! I spat coffee over my monitor when Rourke said his publicist told him who to fuck... FUNNY! Great acceptance speech. Breath of fresh air as far as acceptance speeches go!
  • He actually said "WHAT to fuck" which I find even better.
  • shadow
Micky Rourke just gave the best acceptance speech ever.
  • i'm pretty sure Heath is going to win an Oscar.
  • Well that was a pretty pointless thing to say.
  • Lol, why did they keep showing Christian Slater? Is he big in England or seomthing?
  • I hope they play The Dark Knight score when Heath wins the Oscar.
  • Wow, Mickey's speech was really funny. He'd never get away with that at the Oscars in America.
  • 790
Congrats Mickey!!! Don't forget sports fans, that Mickey is up for an Independent Spirit Award. That show is live the day before the Oscars and its uncensored.
I'm sure he's gonna win it!!!
  • pretty standard results down the line. not much difference from the golden globes or any of those guilds so looks pretty good for the oscars.
  • Mickey made the show
  • "Thanks to Darren Aronofsky for giving me a second chance after f**king up my career for fifteen years." Classic Mickey Rourke acceptance speech!

Also, it was funny and quite emotional to see Goldie Hawn give out the award for Supporting Actor. She kept laughing and joking as she was reading out the nominations as she kept getting her lines wrong (constantly), then as soon as she reads Heath's name, the emotional barriers go down, and you can see the emotion shine through.
  • the "talent we lost" sequence was geniunely touching...actors they might be, but it seemed that some really reacted when they saw Paul Newman and Minghella in the tribute. In addition, Goldie Hawn's reaction to Ledger getting the Bafta seemed real..dunno..
  • nope he aint....
  • These four speeches just need to be prerecorded for the Oscars. They will be hard to bet.
  • Danny FTW!
  • Kokushi
Cant wait to see Slumdog but the girl with the short hair that hugged boyle was facking Hot.
  • Dice
Goldie Hawn is a blubbering loon. I'm tired of all this phony memorializing. He wasn't struck by lightning people - he died of a self-inflicted prescription drug overdose. If you want to celebrate Heath Ledger, best thing would be to donate to Partnership for a Drug-Free America.
  • Why are you so awesome Danny Boyle.
  • Did anyone else notice the camera man put a red filter at aroune 0:26 of mickeys speach? Haha i dont think he couldve said a better speach@
    Mickey for oscar!!
Imagine his speach then! I wander if they will say something to him before the show
  • Wow Mickey Rourke's speech is really really good.

I want him to win because his performance was definitely the best of the year but NOW i also want him to win so i can hear his speech.
  • It's a shame Mickey didn't win the Oscar be we would have been presented with another funny and personal speech instead of a political one.
