For a while, Brian Bendis‘ comic book series Powers was looking to be a big-screen adaptation. Back in 2001, Sony had several drafts drawn up and Frank Oz was, if I remember correctly, attached to direct. Bendis wasn’t too pleased with how the project was going, however.

He tells MTV’s Splash Page, “We had to sit through waves of screenplays that were just inappropriate for the product, and for fans of the book. There were whole drafts of the screenplay without Deena Pilgrim in them. They’d hand me the screenplay and go, “What’s wrong with this?” and I’d go “He has no one to talk to!””

Sounds odd - normally the sidekick is something inserted by studios in these anecdotes, not the first character to get the axe.

That misbegotten run at things has long since gone off track however, and when Bendis yesterday promised on Twitter that some big news was forthcoming, I assumed it would be another attempt to mount the film for the big screen.

Nope. This time, possibly eased along by the relative success (and imminent failure) of Heroes, the show that many have accused of simply leeching on Bendis’ work, Powers is headed to television and Bendis himself has written the pilot.

“I just handed in a draft to the network and we’re getting our notes from the network as soon as this thing is over. So next week I’ll get the notes, and as long as they don’t involve sock puppets and some sort of orgy scene that I’m not interested in, then hopefully it will go in the right direction.”

“This thing” is the NYCC, the network is FX. OK? Too many abbreviations, KWIM?

Powers, if you don’t know, is essentially about buddy cops investigating superpowered criminals. The week-to-week format is clear, the potential for series arcs inherent and, frankly, good writing and casting could make this a smash. Shame we probably can’t expect the comics’ Madman and Savage Dragon cameos.

Do you think a more readily viewed network might have made a better home for Powers (that is to say, a home with deeper pockets) or will the relatively low ratings expectations someplace like FX do the show some favours?

Embedded below is the Powers short film that was once posted on Jinxworld:

Bendis gettong a TV show is awesome news! Does anyone remember that wicked short of Powers that was on Jinxworld?
  • This is great, Powers is one of my favorite comics. It's part cop drama, part superheros, and part Highlander.
  • FX sounds like the right place for it. There you can curse on TV and has two of my other favorite shows. It's always Sunny and Rescue Me.
  • Post
Yeah, I feel like FX would be a great fit, it's quickly becoming one of the best networks for origial series. This is the first time I've heard about Powers but it seems very interesting and looks like it'd be perfect as a TV show.
  • good news, it's a really good read.

but, when the hell is hbo gonna jump on the superhero bandwagon?!
  • Mr T
This is fantastic news. FX is such a great cable channel. Perfect home for Powers. Well done Bendis!
  • Well, at FX at least it won't get the axe in the first month of episodes even if it sucks.
  • Thanks for the reminder. Now embedded in the post above.
  • just keep Michael Bay out of this
  • Palmer
So wait, is this animated or live action?
  • Live action.
  • so the cops have no powers themselves? sounds like an interesting concept.

it almost sounds like the kind of show that would be great, that nobody would watch.

    see: Arrested, or Pushing

  • Well Christian Walker the Main guy use to be a Superhero himself but lost his powers so he started to fight crime as a normal human by becoming a cop, he handles Superhero Cases.

I'd Suggest Patrick Warburton for the part of Walker.
  • There's a little bit about... well, I don't want to give it away. But there's a plot twist with somebody having to keep a secret, eventually.

Awesome! I've always loved Powers and translating it to the small screen is much better. It's been awhile, but what was the connection between Bendis and The OC?
  • Powers would make a great serialized drama. Hopefully FX will have the budgets to make this work.
  • You know, I've been waiting for this day to happen. Powers is an amazing work of literature and I'm glad to see it being produced. I am also glad it's on the FX network, where it has more room the breath and possibly take the risks necessary to make it an amazing show. Imagine Battlestar Galactica on ABC or Dexter on FOX, it just wouldn't cut it. FX is a network that doesn't have to worry about ratings so much as those networks since it is a cable network and not a syndicate.

Powers should only be the beginning. I'm really waiting for a "The Walking Dead" show to be produced on SciFi or something.
  • Andrew
Walking Dead is exactly what HBO should be doing as a companion to True Blood.
  • gah
I really hope it's good. Every time I watch Heroes the writing and production values make me cringe. I wish them the best, but I'm skeptical. Curious what they're doing with Fables as well.
  • Reading up on 'Powers' on Wikipedia, because I had simply not heard of it, the premise and concept sounds to me like it would suit the Hollywood Big Screen more than the small screen, especially since it sounds a lot like 'Heroes', which is a great television show, but seems to have had trouble over the time it's been on TV.
