/Film reader Christopher M sent over two new photos from Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, ne of which gives us our first real look at Black Eyed Peas ‘ singer Taboo as Vega (Balrog in Japan), who you might remember from the Street Fighter video games. See the full photo after the jump, along with a second photo featuring Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) as Maya, getting ready for action.

The character first appeared in Street Fighter II as the second of four computer-controlled opponents. According to Wikipedia, Vega is a masked talon-wielding warrior from Spain who uses a personal fighting style combining Japanese Ninjutsu and Spanish bullfighting, earning him the nickname the “Spanish Ninja”. IGN ranked Vega at number ten in their “Top 25 Street Fighter Characters” article, and GamePro ranked the character #46 in their “47 Most Diabolical Video-Game Villains of All Time” article.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hits theaters on February 27th 2009.

Wow, I feel like throwing up now.
  • Way to reference the always reliable wikipedia Peter! Man this looks sooo bad.
  • No offense to Taboo, but I always pictured Vega as a fucking badass...
  • i agree.. he definetely is not.
  • Palmer
So the marketing of this film is not going to focus on Chun-Li? Even though...you know, the movie is about her? Even if Kristin Kreuk can't act for shit.
  • prophecy_projectz
I think she can act, she just needs good parts. Loved her in Parition. I mean I would judge this nor Smallville with the terrible writing for anything they come up with
  • Jfive
Is it me or does the Vega mask look photoshoped in after the picture was taken? And the mask looks way bigger then his face lol
  • hahaha I was thinking the same thing, doesn't look right!
  • Wow.....I prefer him with his mask on :P
  • They should have got Fergie to play Maya... That would have been the final nail in the already full of nails coffin.
  • dannyboy
Vega ment to be good looking and taboo aint looking good to be Vega
  • The last video game film I saw was Bloodrayne. The only one before that was Mortal Kombat. The films just tend to be utterly horribly lame.
  • filmkid
only Mortal Kombat was the best video game movie
  • ish
thats true....and after that the movies just went south!!!!
  • i'm not arguing that the first movie was good- I KNOW it was bad.

but i grew up thinking that Van Damme damme was a bad ass-- much undeserved nostalgia
  • Something tells me I will most certainly NOT be seeing this movie.
  • Judging by this one pic. This movie is gonna be epic to the limit. Fo Realz.
Like Enter The Dragon Epically awesome. Fo Realz.

That is what I would have said when I was 10 years old.
  • Somebody needs a good shampooing and rinse :D
  • I'm thinking the guy with the fireball is Ryu

  • Frantik
no ryu in the movie, just finished watching it...
but a refference to a second movie with ryu was mentioned.
  • Did I REALLY need to click the jump to see this?
    Ooooooh mysterious.
  • Er, kinda gives off the vibe of a random guy trying to look cool in a shitty hand-made Halloween costume.
  • "Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, ne of which gives us our first real look at Black Eyed Peas ‘ singer Taboo as Vega "

    hahahahaha

    hahahahaha
  • He looks rather like a mad, out for revenge hair stylist. : /
  • Detective comic
Wait a tick! I thought Vega was supposed to be from SPAIN and a matadore that took pride in his his Femine Beautiful looks and used that as a cover to be a deadly assasin that kicked ass with Ninjitsu then swiped his blade across your face till you bled to death and then licked his blades. (Read Street Fighter Eternal) nothing worst than seein a suck-ass reboot! Coulda done so much w/ the original storyline.
  • Shazaaaam!!
lol@Detective....very good! Anyways luckily Ryu isn't in this because even tho' the video game says he's from Japan they might get some 19 year old white kid from Beverly Hills to play him and make Dhalsim CGI.Right in the middle of a "yoga flame" have a Bollywood dance sequence cause he's from India to to please the ppl that like slumdog millionaire.
  • LOL, you're so right!
  • DocHop
Is this Street Fighter or Nightmare on Elm Street...

    What a creepy looking tool...
  • I seriously thought that Vega was a suppose to be Spanish and blonde... Not like a dark skin and black hair ugly looking guy.

One of the reason Vega wears his mask is because of his vanity. He is a "beautiful" man, according to himself and many many girls in the Capcom approved mangas. He does not want to ruin his facial beauty when fighting, so he uses the mask as protection.

This guys is so ugly that I think the reason he wears the mask is to not scare people when he's fighting them.

I knew this movie was going to be bad since it was announced, and this just confirmes it even more.
  • I haven't checked in lately, but from the shots I remember seeing, NONE of the characters even remotely keep to canon. I'm definitely going to wait and see, but it's looking like I'll be passing this one up. The main star doesn't sell the character for me at all, there's just no way.
  • ish
even if the actor was an olive color....still have a good looking spanish guy that whoops ass and takes names.....Taboo is clearly not the guy the girls get wet over....lol
  • LOL, agree with you a 120%.
  • it all looks like an improvement to the first movie...and from what I'm gathering they used a lot of references from the anime movie...so it might end up surprising people....also in the trailer I noticed someone who could be Ryu
  • daddyboy
ryu is not in the movie at all
  • yeah, really?! no ryu? how could u make a street fighter movie without ryu? I mean....if you got no ryu, you essentially should have no Ken. and the original had about what......8playable characters?

LMAO i'll laugh so hard if Zangief is in it, and Ryu isn't. hahahahahhahahahahha
  • I, for one am glad there's no Ryu. Don't have to sit through the horrible mispronunciation again.
  • I'm glad because hopefully this means they'll save Ryu for a worthwhile adaptation.
  • prophecy_projectz
Not for nothing, but the plan is to introduce a batch of the street fighter by each film. Justin Marks already said the next will focus on Ryu's origin. This franchise is mostly aimed at the japanese market so lets see if we get it here in the US
  • marc
for you guys that dont know the reason why theres no ryu or ken or that many other characters cause the filmakers dont want to put too many characters in one movie. that was the reason for the first one being so crappy. they threw in all the characters without any kind of development and it failed miserably. it was said by the director and producers that if chun li does well enough in the box office than they will come out with a ryu film afterwards. that way they can introduce more characters like Sagat. i honestly think its a very smart approach.
  • Scorpionsy
That is not true....see the Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (The TRUE SF Movie) that included all the characters...including those from Super SF II...and even though most characters had small roles...the storyline blended them in perfectly....even Akuma was shown in the background of one scene. Why didn't Capcom learn from the Van Damme movie mistake and stick to the storyline of the Anime and just turn it into a live version with Real Martial Arts actors and CGI effects??? WHY CAPCOM??? WHY!!!!???
  • Where is the Love?
  • I just dont know if i could ever see another live action street fighter the other one was such a monstrosity that im kinda ruined from it and this isnt helping at all
  • pass
  • Wow, this film just keeps getting better. And by better I mean shit.
  • Is Vega still going to be gay in the movie?
  • wiched99
shouldn't blade be in his left hand
  • toryoom
Good lord, this looks bad! ...The comments about Vega's pretty-boy vanity compared to how unfitting Taboo is in the role are spot on, of course, and this just shows how completely callous about the original story and character concepts the makers of this movie probably are. That very hollywood-ish callousness toward franchises they don't believe would be worth the effort to make a proper film translation out of is exactly why those films usually turn out to suck so bad (self-fulfilling prophecy there). The only reason Mortal Kombat worked, in spite of the producers shooting themselves in the foot as always, is because it was such a cheesy tongue-in-cheek game to begin with that the movie couldn't help but emulate that successfully, even if it was unintentional.

Contrariwise, the reason flicks like Lord of the Rings worked so well despite the reticence of various production studios about it's success is because Peter Jackson cared enough to try and stay true to the story's characters, by and large. This care could be applied to ANY film based on another's work, no matter how shallow the overall premise of the original.

A Street Fighter movie *could* be a worthwhile (if somewhat vapid) summer blockbuster-styled action flick if they would just try to do it proper justice and stick with the whole tournament-secretly-controlled-by-evil-megalomaniac (i.e. Bison) setting. Man, I hope someone from CAPCOM is reading this!
  • molee
    uhh.. taboo is no vega.
    he lacks the personality.
i'm happy that ryu is'nt in it cuz i don't wanna see ryu getting f*cked up.
i ope they recast vega if there is a sequel.
  • joe
