David Fincher’s Spider-Man That Never Was

In November 1999, Ain’t It Cool News reported that Sony had narrowed their choices for the big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Spider-Man down to four directors: Barry Sonnenfeld, Michael Bay, Chris Columbus and David Fincher.  Michael Bay passed on the project saying the script needed work (talk about funny) and it was later reported that Fincher passed because “it wasn’t his thing”. I’ve always wondered how Fincher’s name got in the mix, and what Fincher’s vision for Spider-Man would have been. Recently Fincher sat down to answer questions for The Guardian, and the filmmaker was asked about the project.

“I was asked if I might be interested in the first Spider-Man…” “I’m not interested in doing ‘A Superhero’. The thing I liked about Spider-Man was I liked the idea of a teenager, the notion of this moment in time when you’re so vulnerable yet completely invulnerable. But I wasn’t interested in the genesis, I just couldn’t shoot somebody being bitten by a radioactive spider – just couldn’t sleep knowing I’d done that.” … “I went in and told them what I might be interested in doing, and they hated it.”

I also once heard that Fincher’s pitch involved the death of Gwen Stacy and at one point he relented to the idea of showing some of Spidey’s origin (or maybe pre-origin) in flashbacks. I’ve also read elsewhere rumors that Fincher wanted Edward Norton to play Peter Parker, not sure if it is true or not.

As much as I love David Fincher’s incredible films, and as much as I’m curious to see what he would have done, I’m kinda glad he never had the chance. I wasn’t a big fan of the first Spider-Man movie, but to me Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 nailed the comic book. I’m not sure the tone, story, and characters could have been presented any better.

  • gah
Ed Norton as Parker? Oh man, that would've been cool. Ditko's spidey looked alot like Norton. Although Tobey Maguire was definitely awkward enough to pull it off.
  • i don't think norton is nearly awkward enough to be Peter Parker.

He is waaaay tooooooo much BAMF
  • But, he's the Hulk! What, is Christian Bale going to be Flash and Superman now too? :P
I prefer keeping one person to one character (per franchise).
  • yeah...this is all before hulk (or the first spiderman) ever happened though.
  • "I just couldn’t shoot somebody being bitten by a radioactive spider – just couldn’t sleep knowing I’d done that."

    You make movies...
    Not cure Cancer.
Get over yourself. Seven was good, but not that good. Evil Dead was better.
  • Some people really care about what they create. Not only do they see it as a movie, but they see it as an art form. Some of us just aren't willing to film certain things that we don't see as right whether it's for profession, art, or passion. That just shows that Fincher really cares about what he films.
  • A guy with an imaginary friend, a man who ages backwards, Alien 3...

...a radioactive spider? That's way too fuckin crazy.
  • "a guy with an imaginary friend". really? never heard of that before. ever. i'm not saying that the other two aren't credible examples, but schizophrenia (spelling? i don't really care) isn't terribly rare.
  • Oh dear. You need to understand that film directors (at the excellence of Fincher) devote a lot of themselves to their craft and pour themselves into frames of their films. I think Evil Dead is brilliant as well, but it can never be compared to Se7en, they are completely different levels of quality and class.

But its evident you're about 15 and still have some living to do before you realize what a film can represent.
  • How many replies are there?
  • You write comments in an internet box. You don't cure cancer either. Get over yourself.
  • Of course the studios wouldn't be willing to go along with Fincher's version of Spider-Man back then. But had Spider-Man's production been halted until now (i.e. following the release of The Dark Knight), I can guarantee they would be throwing bags of money at him to do it.

    Hollywood is so predictable.
  • gah
can you imagine a dark realistic Spider-man? That would be the stupidest thing ever. And seriously Fincher, Raimi is sleeping fine knowing he directed a movie about a guy climbing walls that had ten times more emotional resonance than Benjaman Button.
  • Well said, sir. Well said.
  • "What do you mean Spider-man can't have exploding spider-webs? Fine, I got giant robots on line 3 who are more than willing to blow shit up..."
  • ImGlad
    aaaahhaahahhahah. That's great.
  • Evil Dead was better than 7even? Whatever you're smoking ... stop it.
  • it's se7en
  • Damn i knew i did something wrong! D:
  • NO...
  • Matt
Yes, Evil Dead is better than SEVEN. Seven is a great example of a brilliantly acted, composed, edited, directed piece of shit.
  • They're both great for totally different reasons.
  • I'm happier Michael Bay didn't have a chance to touch it. Although chances are he could've made a better Spiderman 3...

Tons of ridiculous explosions are better than emo Peter Parker dancing.
  • Sucrose Fructose
Only a motherfucking idiot would say that Evil Dead was anything more than a lucky, shit movie. Seven is a masterpiece compared to most of Raimi's output.
  • Beep Beep
Evil Dead I hated. But can you say the same about Evil Dead 2?
  • Matt
Only a motherfucking idiot would say that Evil Dead was a lucky, shit movie.
  • yeah, only not really. it kinda was lucky. and a piece of shit. but the campiness and cult following has turned it into a masterpiece. if Evil Dead wasn't a lucky incident, then why is Evil Dead 2 so much better?
  • ReggieHammond
In the early nineties, James Cameron was attached to direct. They turned him away because they thought his vision was too violent. I love Raimi's vision, but a Spiderman on par with Terminator 2 in story and action would have been nuts!
  • Did you read his script? Doc Ock had a sun machine that hovered in the sky or something. His assistant throughout the movie was also named 'Weiner'.

To top it off, Peter was more of a hustler in that script than in all of Spidey 3. Try and find it around the internet.
  • Wow, Fincher's Spiderman woulda been some cool shit...
  • if anyone finds this interesting at all, i highly highly suggest reading david hughes' book "The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made" - it tells the (hi)stories of (i believe) 21 of the best movies that are stuck in development hell (some were put into production after the publication of the book, so its not 100% accurate, but great none the less), including JAMES CAMERON's spider man, william gibson's alien3, and david lynch's ronnie rocket

i swear im not getting compensated at all for this, i just think it is an amazing book and more people should check it out
  • Think I'd have to agree with Test Subject here. He's going into this knowing it's a superhero film from a notoriously campy franchise, so he was taking himself a bit too seriously there. Going serious worked for the Dark Knight because that was true to the character, it wouldn't have gone down the same for Spiderman.

Also, I totally agree with Peter, Spidey 2 showed what a perfect match Sam Raimi was for the Spiderman franchise. Too bad he sabotaged himself with Spidey 3...
  • In all fairness Spiderman 3 wasn't completely Raimi's fault, I mean Avi Arad did force him to have Venom. Spiderman shouldn't be serious, and it should have some campiness. Technically Fincher is doing a comic book movie though now, Black Hole, which is a pretty awesome graphic novel. Also I mean you can say the same about Christopher Nolan, really, I mean Batman and Robin & Batman Forever set the new unfortunate tone of campiness, and Nolan came in and made something serious. So maybe I am alone but I don't think it would be bad like some are saying, it probably would have been awesome. Raimi is perfect for Spidey though... to bad S3 was so disappointing though (but not bad).
  • ImGlad
Um. He didn't "go into" anything. That's why he didn't do it; cuz of the campiness of it. The studio offered it to him, he didnt want to do it like Raimi eventually did, but offered the studio his own idea that he might be more comfortable with. And they didn't take it. So he didn't do it. He can take his stuff as seriously as he wants.
  • detective comics
@ test_subject_28 ain't no frickin' way evil dead was better than se7en you douche!!!!!!! Evil dead is a classic , but so is se7en besides they apples and oranges a$$hole. Anyways... why all the hate for Fincher, this is the same guy that made fight club and zodiac too. BTW he didn't write Benjamin Button he only directed it. He did the best job of intepreting the script as he could in my opinion and anybody else that knows anything about movie making. If you didn't like it....take some film classes and make a movie yourself. Maybe that will humble your ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • first off, we have the reply button for a reason. so you don't look like a douche halfway down the page.

that said, i agree with what you said. while i like Se7en better than Evil Dead, they are two completely different movies.
  • Settle down a little. There are more constructive ways to present a criticism than getting personal, lashing out and calling people assholes for liking the films they like...
  • you need to go have a pull and calm down..
  • Shazaaam!
I agree w/ detective comic. I mean who the hell said David Fincher's spiderman would be dark??? The man is great at suspense and storytelling and that's all you need . I mean who woulda known that sam raimi , the same guy that made evil dead and army of darkness woulda made spiderman such a bright movie?....so shut up
  • yeah, I confur with Devindra. It's just a f--king comic book superhero, not a F. Scott Fitzgerald short story.
  • gah
So basically a man with spider-powers is somehow less ridiculous than a man aging backwards?
  • yeah, a story about a man aging backwards. adapted from a story by one the greatest writers of all time. with a fantastic story and oscar caliber performances (in front of and behind the cameras). go find some credibility.
  • Yeva
What the hell did MoMo just say? Anybody? Especially the last sentence is very confusing. Maybe because the suggested idea of the performances having anything to do with fincher choosing to make the film makes no sense? Anyway, it's a job Fincher, get the f over it. I'm glad he didn't get it as that would have been an awkward ass film but yea he sounds way too pretentious in that/
  • Palmer
Well, at least he would've gave a better treatment to Gwen Stacy than what was given to the character in Spider-Man 3. And I shudder at the thought of Michael Bay making Spider-Man. He'd probably have him use grenades just for the hell of it.
  • Jon
But Spider Man 3 was shit! Raimi owes us a decent 4th one! ...or at least a new kickass Bruce Campbell B-movie!
  • Fincher needs to get over himself. The more I read about him, the more he comes off as a pretentious, confrontational, douche bag. I love Fight Club and all, but dude, you aren't God.
  • but he made "Fight Club". that puts him pretty close.
  • Aesir
Fight Club was god-awful, and yes, Fincher is way too pretentious for his own good.
  • Hiegmachine
fight club was god-awful?.....get off this site dude you have no taste in movies....go watch spiderman 3 and tap your toes to peter parker waltzing down the street....

    ....freaken wierdos man.
  • Fitzy
Oh goodness yes. Let's not repeat that Halle Berry- Catwoman/Storm fiasco again..
