Andrew Niccol directed Gattaca and Lord of War - tick, tick - but also Simone - big question mark, vague tick in pencil perhaps. On the other hand, he also scripted The Truman Show - giant gold tick. I think, looking at my balance sheet, his projects are well worth getting excited for.

His next film The Cross has a rather modest $24 million budget, dredged from Australian, French and German coffers, so even while it is a sci-fi action thriller, don’t expect a raft of expensive FX work. That’s not a warning of course - I mean, who cares? - but it’s a detail that might help you position this film in a subgenre more accurately.

Orlando Bloom (seemingly unpopular) will star as a man attempting to cross somekind of as-yet unexplained Border; Vincent Cassel (seemingly eccentric) will play the sentry who wants to stop him; Olga Kurylenko (seemingly allergic to clothes) will likely be a love interest, and might even double cross Bloom’s character because, let’s face facts, that title has to have more than two meanings, right?

One of these meanings, I’m convinced, will tie into the stations of the cross and the travails of Jesus as he too attempted to do what he wasn’t allowed or supposed to. Niccol has already been acknowledged by academics for his exploration of/obsession with Christian imagery - with Michael Foley’s Plato, Christianity, and the Cinematic Craft of Andrew Niccol being perhaps the boldest dive into this particular deep end.

Variety report that Kinology are out at the EFM (yep, that again) trying to sell distribution rights to The Cross and others. One of their more interesting offerings will be Johnnie To’s Vengeance in which Johnny Hallyday (!) will play a hitman-turned-chef.

Hitman-turned-chef…? We’ve had that one before, and at least once. What is it people like about that idea? Perhaps it’s time for a chef-turned-hitman - may I suggest Gordon Ramsay for the role, Mr. Richie?

  • I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Gattaca--- one of the best movies to come out of the 1990s. Orlando Bloom isn't all that bad-- I liked him in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. I look forward to this.
  • I liked him on Extras a lot.
  • hah
  • Is it just here that the New York Film Accademy banner is out of place, covering up the title of the story? Oh and btw, that guy in glasses looks ridiculous.
  • Yeah please slashfilm get rid ofit
  • This sounds really interesting... loved Gattaca as well.
  • Oh Good. I really like Niccol's work, especially Gattaca, so this pleases me. From your description it sounds like it could be a low budget Blade Runner esk movie...or am I reading that the wrong way?
  • I don't see the banner because I'm at work and we have programs to block annoying ad banners.

Well thank goodness you shared that with us.
  • duh.
  • man, that picture of Orlando Bloom... ugh.. there's this really good-looking guy who works at my local bookstore and I go there every weekend to read... I see him there all the time... he looks like Orlando Bloom, EXACTLY IN THAT PHOTO, and we recognize each other, cos I've been coming there since September now. but I'm too afraid to speak to him o_O
  • Bull
    So Orlando Bloom isn't dead?

Also, it seems to me that F/X ruins ALOTof high budget movies. In my opinion, the lower budgets make filmmakers be more creative with their work and not just rely on special effects, which often look like shit to begin with.
  • I'll join the band wagon, but I won't drink the kool-aid just yet.
  • Andrew Niccol is a great director so while I'm not the biggest fan of Olga Kurylenko it's awesome to hear that he has a new project in the works!
  • Agreed. She needs to just stop.
  • Since it is Andrew Niccol we're talking about - the director of friggin' Gattaca! - then I am on board for this to some extent. Bloom could surprise, Cassel is an interesting choice. I can't give a strong opinion on Kurylenko as I have only seen her in Vincenzo Natali's Paris Je T'aime vampire segment. Made a good vampire.
  • Cast looks ok, Vincent Cassel saves it for me, and while we don't have much information on the plot yet, like everybody else I'm anticipating a lot more, seeing Nicol behind the camera once again.
  • Mehhh........orlando bloom? meh............

The Cross sounds like he's gone back to a fairly old Gattaca/Truman Show era script of his called River Road. It wasnt very good.. Makes sense it was not made at the time. While it shares a LOT of themes with Gattaca/Truman Show.. It was by far the weakest script in his "yearning to escape" trilogy.
  • Gattaca, Gattaca, Gattaca! Oh wait, am I thinking of something else?
  • G L
I have been waiting for a long time for his next film to come out, very excited about this film. All of his films are enjoyable and this one sounds like its not going to be the exception. The Cross sounds like the old saying if its based on River Road, the grass is always greener on the other side. Can't wait!
