Warner Bros Wants Seven Batman Movies

While the sequel to The Dark Knight is just in the beginning stages of development, Warner Bros is already looking much further down the line. During today’s Time Warner earnings call, CEO Jeff Bewkes compared the Batman series to the Harry Potter film franchise, saying that they hope to release a long line of sequels.

“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy taht very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 - 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

I kinda get the impression that if Christopher Nolan does a third Batman film, it will probably be his last. He seems like a filmmaker that wants to move on to his own passion projects, and while Warner Bros has been very patient with him in regards to a Dark Knight sequel, the studio/company is clearly looking much further down the line. Warner Bros wants to make a lot more Batman movies? I know, this is a pretty obvious story, but it’s the first time that Time Warner/Warner Bros has said publicly that they are looking beyond the next film.

I know Zack Snyder has expressed interest in filming an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, and even got Frank Miller’s blessing at Comic Con last year. If Nolan isn’t interested in making a fourth Batman film, I would love to see Warner Bros take the leap and do the alternative future story with Snyder in the director’s seat. That way you could give the A-team (cast and crew) behind the Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Batman 3 a break and still make another Batman flick. Sounds like a much better idea than possibility tanting the franchise with a Justice League movie featuring a recast younger Bruce Wayne.

  • Eh, as much as I love Begins and TDK, I really don't want to see this go the way as the 90s Batman movies. I don't blame WB for wanting to capitalize on the franchise, but I just don't want to see it become a vicious cycle of rebooting franchises and then running them into the ground. Hopefully they make the right choices and keep putting out a quality product.

Exactly! The thing about the Nolan's Batman is, it's viable as a standalone film while remaining true to the comic books. Batman Begins and the Dark Knight were far more than just reboots of Batman lore, but serious, engrossing, enthralling masterpieces of cinema that can easily stand the test of time. Trying to reboot after this is like trying to reboot the Godfather or Chinatown. You just can't. The movies were unique and specific in quality, taste, emotion, and visuals. Seven movies? Forget it. If they make it to four, we'll be lucky.
  • come on. we're talkin about a franchise which made WB more than a billion in the 80s and still keeps making money. I'm talking about the burton one, with the iconic batman emblem. it's just ludicrous to think that WB will stop to make the films because Nolan is not interested. I think TDK is the best film of 2008, but it would be utterly naive to think that WB would stop making the films (or making them just on Nolan's terms) because TDK was just a success (both critically and commercially). Batman is as important to WB as bugs bunny, and it is an economic reality that batman franchise will go on and on and on and on...lets just hope they'll figure out a way not to fuck up ala batman & robin.
  • I kind of want to see how a godfather reboot would be.
Not saying that I necessarily want one, just want to see how it would be done.
If only I had a What If? Machine from futurama.
  • I agree with you! I seriously do not want to see this version of the franchise get destroyed like in the past. At least Harry Potter has been consistently stable, but the material for HP is very easy to follow, each book each movie. But for Batman there is just too much to be covered and it would get to a point where the Nolan's realism is not going to be able to keep up with the actual Batman universe. I mean sooner or later they will have to introduce Robin into the series (I'm a Robin supported as long as he's properly introduce and not just a rush thing) and all of this other character that would probably not exactly fit with the way Nolan tells the story. There is a lot of super powered people in Batman's universe, they cannot always be left out.
  • Dr. Doc
its way too soon for a DKR flick

i think that as long as the character and his mythos are treated w/ respect and taken seriously and the people behind it are passionate and dedicated about it, more Batman flicks would be a great thing

if James Bond can have 22 flicks, why cant Batman?

I don't want the Batman series to be whored any more past a third film. What, does Nolan look like some sort of slut you pick up on the side of the street? Seriously Warner, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING!?
  • Read the article, they said exactly what they're thinking. They want to make more movies with the tentpole projects they have. I wouldn't mind seeing anymore Batman films as long as they keep the same quality as the last two Batman films.
  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEAH right.
  • /ambient
I'll probably loose interest in Batman once Nolan stops making them. Sure, there's plenty of filmmakers who could make a great Batman film, but I'd rather see something new than different variations of Batman over and over again.
  • fordicon
Nooooooooo! (metaphorically falls out of a skyscraper, Hans Gruber style).
  • If there's a Batman 3 and then a Snyder-directed Dark Knight Returns, then I'll be a happy boy, but no more. I wonder if Nolan even has passion in a third Batman...
  • Dark Knight Returns would make an awesome closing movie to the current Bat franchise.
  • batzarro
Exactly! Jump straight into from "Osama-Manson Joker" to Dystopic apocalyptic vision of the future. What a capital Idea! with the girl Robin and everything! You should work at WB!
  • 7 films. eek. it is just going to get stale.

i'm not sure i'd be too interested in watching a The Dark Knight Returns film, and then just go back and pick up where The Dark Knight left off.
  • Not to mention I really can't see Warner Bros agreeing to Superman being a government stooge as the climax of the film.
  • Yeah seriously. superman is so weaksauce in the novel. Not to mention Joker would have to make a comeback.

Although the fight between Batman and the leader of the Mutants would be pretty damn exciting to watch.
  • gah
I can't believe how many people are not excited about this. I wish there was a Batman movie coming out every year.
  • Dvq
a third Batman will do for me as long as the Nolans and David Goyer are involved, i like Zack Snyder's vision for filmmaking but theres no possible way he can land the Batman stories to reality like the Nolan brothers did. btw Peter, any news on 'The Prisoner' by Chris Nolan? im dying to know more about it!.
  • Dru Jeffries
Don't think that Nolan's The Prisoner is going to happen, since AMC is remaking the show as a television miniseries with Jesus and Magneto is the lead roles. See http://blogs.amctv.com/the-prisoner/
  • hahah Jesus
  • Dvq
oh damn, well, thanks for ruining my day, lol jk.
  • It's good news... means his schedule's all cleared up for the next 5 Batman flicks.
  • optimusprime
If the third is done, then Im done. I really don't like this.
  • Ben
I know I might get some flack for this but why not do a Batman Beyond flick? I loved that show.....
  • DUDE!!! I was just thinking that!!! I fucking loved 'Batman Beyond' haha...good thinking man...
  • Jon
It's too soon for something like that. That would probably be something they'd think about doing when Christian gets older (if he stays on throughout them). It's not a bad idea but you play the futuristic part too out of whack and it just doesn't seem right. It'd be interesting to say the least.
  • Leeski241
Batman and I are done professionally.
  • TheMarquis
I can watch Batman movies forever. Bring 'em on.
  • ME TOO, at least that makes two tickets sold.
  • Batzarro
Yes, they'll make them until people stop watching them. Moving on...

    I'm surprised about Superman, though...
  • jay347
    GO FUCK YOUR-SELF WARNER BROS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • chase12
any one for peter dinklage as the penguin?
  • haha dude Peter Dinklage is pretty much really attractive. true story.
  • they should break new ground, use villains that haven't been used before.

BANE would be pretty amazing on the big screen =)
  • me
bane has been on the big screen with poison ivy and the riddler in the crappy wanna be futuristic batman movies of the 90s
  • Rone
Right, it was Batman and Robin - the one with George Clooney playing Batman - and Arnold Schwarzenegger played Mr. Freeze. It was pretty much the worst Batman ever!
  • Jesus. Seven? I don't think anyone should make more than 3 movies for a franchise. Harry Potter is really pushing it with as many movies as they have, even though I'm looking forward to the next. I guess "always leave the audience wanting more" is not a phrase in Warner Bros. vocabulary.
  • A third one by Nolan and company will be just the right bite.
  • anymore, and there's going to be some puking going down.
  • Umm... did he compare harry potter to batman?
  • Dantes
I don't understand the complaints if Nolan wanted to make a fourth one or beyong everyone would go bat shit crazy for it
  • If Chris Nolan is involved I'm all aboard. If he's not. I'm not interested.
  • Jon
Maybe everyone would, but he's better than almost any other person that Warner Brothers would be able to get. Seriously, they wouldn't be able to pay for someone like him that could keep the franchise stable. Hell, they couldn't hire a competent replacement director the last time. Christopher Nolan has to be considered on the same level (or a step down at most) from the likes of Clint Eastwood or Spielberg or Francis Ford Coppola. How many times do you think any franchise could land a guy like that? Honestly, not too many.
  • money, money, money, rolling in money.
  • thats alot
  • starscream9289
    What the.......7? Too much.
  • it could work if they are approached the the same way they approached the first two.
  • The Dark Knight Reloaded, The Dark Knight Resurrection, The Battle of The Batman, The Dark Knight's Dead: The Final Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Generations
