Martin Campbell in Talks to Direct The Green Lantern

Martin Campbell is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of the DC comic book series The Green Lantern according to Variety. Campbell is probably best known as the director of James Bond films Casino Royale and GoldenEye, but his filmography also includes The Mask of Zorro/Legend of Zorro, Vertical Limit, and the upcoming Mel Gibson film Edge of Darkness. The screenplay was penned by Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone), Marc Guggenheim (Law & Order, Eli Stone) and Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes).

Berlanti was at one point attached to helm the project, but is now attached to an adaptation of Jonathan Tropper’s upcoming novel This Is Where I Leave You. Campbell is a much better choice in my opinion. He is another example of Warner Bros hiring a director who is way over qualified, and can bring a sense of realism to the potential franchise. I was worried that after The Dark Knight that DC/WB would rush into darker versions of the comic properties with no care to the level of talent involved. But it appears that the studio execs might have actually learned something from their experience working with Christopher Nolan. Shocking, I know.

The Green Lantern character was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940. The Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives him control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

Green Lantern's one of my favorite comic characters, so I really really hope they do it justice on the big screen. I'm not terribly excited for Campbell as the director, but it could be far worse. I'll have to wait for more news. I'd be fine with Gosling as GL, he's a talented actor. I just hope that they have a talented actor play the villain as well (hopefully Sinestro) and that most of the film takes place in space/other planets. If they set this movie on Earth I'll be pissed.
  • I just hope those Ryan Gosling rumors will come true and he'll play Hal Jordan. That would be perfect.
  • Maybe a cameo from all of them like John, Guy, and Allen Scoot you like a old newspaper with the first Green Lantern. But Hal the Greatest in the comics. The 2nd one should be Sinestro Corps War and then Blackest Night. but the first one going to be more of Emerald Dawn then Rebirth.
  • um, that guy is a far cry from christopher nolan...if they brought on aronofsky i'd be excited, the guy who brought us zorro? not so much. don't get me wrong, casino royale was good, but it was little more than a competent execution of a production team mandate, it wasn't revolutionary cinema.

still can't believe aronofsky committed to a robocop remake, the franchise is beneath him

all is right in the world

Not sure how I feel. On one hand, I loved Casino Royale, but on the other hand, Mask of Zorro is the only movie I've ever slept through in the theaters.
  • I'm assuming the GL will be Hal Jordan right?
  • Green Lantern was always my fav comic besides Dead Pool....so hearing that Campbell is taking the reigns makes me very happy. He obviously has skills and will bring some credibility and sense to this film...

I thought I was going to see Joel Shumacher's name attached or even Mark Steven Johnson *shudder*
  • Peter i've noticed you have credited "Variety" but have not set up the link to work. Thats awesome, why give them the link referral..

    Anyway,
Looks like there is a good group of people behind this. I remembering hearing about this a while ago, lets hope this is for real and not a rumour..
  • This project really needs a rumor page.
  • thankyoufor
and the guy who made NO ESCAPE
    greatest movie ever!!!
seriously its badass in a cheesy way
  • They should make it more sci-fi than dark and gritty. And I'm talking out-of-this-word foreign, odd, with a 70s vibe, but serious. With a little Avatar thrown in.
  • MCA
Not convinced, but good luck to them.
  • Campbell is a brilliant director who knows how to play action out perfectly without subsidising other area's of the plot, interesting team penning the screenplay though.
  • Id prefer if he made the third bond film in the daniel craig trilogy than work on thsi! more of a bond fan
  • This could be the franchise that DC needs, b/c they can create spin-offs for the Green Lantern Corps similar to the 'Marvel:Originals".
  • Yet another blow to Seth Rogen's Green Hornet.

Why? I'll tell you. Anyone in Hollywood knows that releasing two movie with almost identical name is bad karma. People just going to be confused if they are released almost together. Green Hornet, Green Lantern... this is a flop written on both movies.

There should be at least 6 month separation between the releases, even better a year, and since Rogen's project is in bad situation, and Green Lantern's wheels start to spin, it seems that Rogen's Hornet will have to wait even more.

And waiting is never good, people might move to other projects. I think this is another nail in Hornet's coffin. It all depends now on Rogen's behavior, because he is the only one that holds his movie right now. Rogen walks away, or have seconds thoughts - you can say bye bye to Hornet.

  • This is great! Finally the GL movie is coming along so perfectly so far. I really hope this movie is really good. And I really hope they are taking advice from Geoff Johns!
  • I wonder how a movie on the Green Lantern will do at the box office. It doesn't have the appeal of your Superman, Batman, X-Men, or Spiderman.

All of those guys had cartoons airing when I was growing up as a kid, and watching them on the big screen was a must.

Green Lantern to me, just seems like another superhero I don't care to see, kind of like Daredevil. I'll just have to wait for the trailer i suppose.
  • You can say the samething about Iron Man (Thought it did a have A cartoon, which kinda sucked compared to the 90s cartoons of Spidey and X-Men.
  • Fartie Lange
that iron man cartoon is unwatchable

GL is gonna be amazing though
  • this is awesome news. casino royale is one of my favourite movie. with a good script this could be the next big thing
  • Yeah, I love GL but the whole weakness to yellow thing was kind of lame. Although the first GL (Alan Scott) had a weakness for anything wooden, which is kid of more lame. Really, I think it was created because a the time every superhero had to have some type of weakness (Superman, Kryptonite, you get the idea). Although as someone else has pointed out, the issue with the color yellow has kind of been dropped in the comics.
  • Right on. This gives me hope.
  • i second that
  • Damn, I'd MUCH rather he returned to Bond, he's made my favourite Bond movies by far (GoldenEye and Casino Royale).
  • This is pretty damn awesome. Good chice, WB.

Plus, Green Lantern is a pretty damn cool character.
  • they will probably base the plot around one of the stories he has written, just like how the dark knight had some influence by the long Halloween and the killing joke
  • Tim Drake
So I read part of the script online, and have to say it was really really really good. I just hope they use Brandon Routh for the Clark Kent cameo part.
  • Clark Kent makes a cameo? interesting....I wanna see GL vs. Superman that would be a great movie...
  • OOH OOH OOH not bad.

ill give warner brothers props, they hire legit talent to handle their properties.

instead of some people *cought fox cough*
  • AAAA
WB are crazy not to get Geoff Johns involved somehow
  • If I'm not mistaken, one of the screenwriters is a comic book writer. He knows the current of Johns' Green Lantern series. I'm sure hes spoken to him once or twice.
  • gah
True. However they can redeem themselves by hiring him to reboot Superman. His action comics run with Braniac has movie written all over it.
  • i like the lantern, but i don't know if they can make a good movie with a guy who's weakness is the color yellow

whos the villain going to be? big bird? crayola-man?

all kidding aside, GL is pretty badass...but those little dudes creep me out
  • Palmer
To be fair, the Golden Age Green Lantern''s weakness was wood and plants. Not sure if he still has that though.

  • Does anyone besides Superman and Green Lantern have a specific, singular weakness? I mean, if we're discounting things like bullets, what other superheroes have a defined Achilles' heel?
  • The Fourth World Gods are vulnerable to radium. Wonder Woman loses her powers if she's tied up by a man. The Martian Manhunter can't cope with fire. And Professor Xavier has one weakness: stairs.
  • /filmluvshal
yeah. the yellow was explained as the color of fear or something. only the rookie GL's have problems with yellow. Hal Jordan pwns it obv. this is great news though. can't wait for the movie. should be epic (all the script reviews said it is)
  • yeah, the yellow was dropped. It was explained in a way but it doesn't matter at this point. I've read the script (the first draft..yes it's real) and the 'yellow' disorder is not present.
  • The color yellow? Are you serious? I never cared about green latern and this doesn't really help.
  • gah
No, its not his weakness. His ring just doesnt work on it. Plus, thats been thrown out in later versions of the character anyway.
  • Green Lantern is pretty cool.
  • gah
Agreed. It should be like Star Wars but with tights.
  • Now this movie will never measure up to the awesome image you just put in my mind.
  • gah
It's an okay choice. Neither thrilled or dissapointed. He did a more competant job on Bond than Marc Forster, so that's saying something. It'll be interesting to see how Edge of Darkness turns out, especially without DeNiro.
  • Palmer
I find it hard to believe that a sense of realism can be brought to both the Golden Age Alan Scott version and the Silver Age Hal Jordan and the GL Corps versions. But I'm still excited nonetheless!
