This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO
Compared to Apatow-directed/produced relationship comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, you can’t exactly say Zack and Miri Make a Porno is breaking new ground with its combination of raunchy R-rated humor with a more sincere, emotional romance at the center of it all. Then again, even if those films didn’t exist, it still wouldn’t be breaking new ground, since Kevin Smith has been doing this since Chasing Amy. So all those saying Smith is just channeling Apatow can suck it. If anything, Apatow has been channeling Smith; he even admitted as much at last year’s Comic-Con, when he labeled Smith as one of his inspirations. And while Zack and Miri may not be the best comedy of the year, it’s definitely up there, and is certainly deserving of a purchase.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Full length documentary, deleted and extended scenes, all of the “Money Shots” promo videos, and a blooper reel.

NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST
It’s hard enough as it is to find any decent romantic comedies, but romantic comedies for the teen crowd? Those are nonexistent. Luckily, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist offers a step in the right direction to remedy this. It’s not an amazing movie by any means, but it’s sweet, funny, has a solid soundtrack, and provides two of the more charming and interesting romantic leads to be found in its genre.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Commentary with director Peter Sollett, actors Michael Cera, Kat Dennings and Ari Graynor, a second commentary with Peter Sollett, authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan and screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, deleted scenes, outtakes, animated storyboards, a photo gallery, and a digital copy.

MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA
(Releases February 6, 2009.)
Although it was nothing special, I can openly admit that I at least moderately enjoyed the first Madagascar. As for the sequel, despite it remaining as comfortably watchable as that movie, I couldn’t help but be put off by how blatantly obvious it was that its sole reason for existence was money. It’s not like you can watch the movie and think to yourself that the filmmakers were inspired to make a sequel because they had such a great follow-up story to tell. No, each character subplot/conflict introduced here was clearly done so because, well, the characters needed new subplots and conflicts. If you can get past that though, the film makes for decent entertainment. I particularly loved the score by Hans Zimmer, which definitely helped to class things up. (You can check out this song he did with Will.I.Am for a sample of what I’m talking about.)
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: A filmmaker commentary, featurettes (It’s a Family Affair: The Cast of Escape 2 Africa, The Making of Escape 2 Africa, Crash Landing, African Adventure, Jambo Jambo: Swahili Speak), 4 music videos (”Move It, Move It”, “Big and Chunky”, “She Loves Me”, “The Traveling Song Sing Along”), a DWA Jukebox and games.

BOTTLE SHOCK
As a devoted Alan Rickman fan, I’m willing to overlook the apparent predictability and constant contrivances of Bottle Shock (which are pointed out repeatedly in the film’s somewhat lackluster reviews) in favor of its admitted entertainment value. Even if the film sucks, at least it’s an opportunity to see Rickman in another lead role; the dude deserves more of them.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Commentary by actors Bill Pullman, Chris Pine and Eliza Dushku, director Randall Miller, writers Jody Slavin, Ross Schwartz and Lannette Pabon, and producer J. Todd Harris, 2 featurettes (An Underdog’s Journey: The Making of Bottle Shock, Chateau Montelena: One Winery’s Search for Excellence), and deleted scenes.

THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES
Right off the bat, I’ll admit that I’m clearly not the demographic for this movie. After all, I don’t have a vagina. If I did, maybe this sappy, sugary-sweet drama set in the South about a young girl who runs away from her troubled life and finds solace in a loving household might interest me more. But I don’t, and it doesn’t.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Theatrical and director’s cuts of the movie, commentary with writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood, producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Joe Pichirallo, actors Dakota Fanning And Queen Latifah, a second commentary with writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood and editor Terilyn Shropshire, 8 deleted scenes, and featurettes (The World Premiere, The Women And Men Of The Secret Life Of Bees, Adaptation: Bringing The Secret Life of Bees To The Big Screen, Inside The Pink House With Sue Monk Kidd).

  • "Right off the bat, I’ll admit that I’m clearly not the demographic for this movie. After all, I don’t have a vagina." Lol! I was looking forward to 'Nick and Norah', but so far everybody's response has been average, so I will probably take your advice and rent it when it is released in Britain (after a busy few weeks at work, home and university I've still got around 20 new releases to watch at my local cinema!).
  • I don't know if Zach and Miri is a buy. Decent movie but how many times are you really going to watch it?
  • "...at least it’s an opportunity to see Rickman in another lead role..." Preach it. Rickman is probably one of the most versatile film actors of today, and yet he's relegated in major films to more two dimensional characters.

  • I really wanted to like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist but it just missed on every level for me. I completely agree with Zakc And Miri apon my second viewing I think it really is one of Kevin Smith's better movies, proabably in his top 3. I gotta think if the studio didn't pick a Holloween release date it would have done much better in the theaters.
  • I love these updates!! thanks! have you guys posted about the new he-man film? we need t make sure they include aqua (mer-man), beast man, and every other character includig moss-man.

on a side note, elizabthe banks ( mitchell) is not as hot as she used to be ( invincible) - totally not as hot.
  • WTF Zack & Miri is on DVD shelves in the States already, yet Australia is still waiting for a theatrical release. Feb 19??? What a joke. No offense, Kevin, but the film DESERVES to flop on our screens. You know every fan has already ripped it off online torrents (myself included), and why not?!! One has to admit that is pretty ridiculous.

*copy and pastes this over at View Askew where some international readers might actually give a f*ck*
  • Rant concluded. Apologies.
  • Don't stop.
    I'm pissed too.
    Its so annoying!
I've been waiting for it here in Brisbane since I heard about it.
AND NOW ITS BEEN TO LONG!
    =[

Damn you people who figure out the release schedule! (shakes fist)
  • Marcuz
Hey At Least You guys get a chance if i want to see it i have to travel about 3 hours to the closest cinema that actually shows the film
  • Howdy,
Kevin Smith has no say in when the movie gets released in each country. I'm almost positive if it was up to him it would get a day and date release in every country so everyone could enjoy it together.
So to balme him for it not being released yet in Australia is ridiculous. If you want to blame someone, blame the distributor. I don't know who has the distribution rights in Australia but find out and bitch at them.
But know that Smith has nothing to do with it being delayed for you.
  • CineManic,
I see what you're saying, and I totally understand that the distributor for each region has sway over such things... but Kevin has sway over every project he's involved with, and he's always into it from start to finish. It's a View Askew film, so he and his team would have signed on respective distributors when the film was financed - and release schedules like this would have been settled at the same time.

Regardless of who's to blame (note that in my rant I meant no offense to Kevin) I didn't mean for i to read so much as a finger point more than a bitch... the fact remains that it's pretty absurd in today's day and age that a film would be this late on an overseas cinema release. For instance, I believe Iron Man and Transformers were on Australian screens before the US... I can understand a week or two. Even a month. But almost SIX months?? AND after a domestic DVD release? Someone is having a lend, surely.

Also, you and I know distributors handle these things behind the screens (pun intended), but to the general public Kevin Smith is the public figure to whom they can point the finger. And they are, unfortunately, in a very negative way.

    Rant 2: The Reply ... concluded :o)
  • Ok I get you. That does make sense.
I wasn't saying it's not absurd, because clearly it is (kind of like the US just now getting Taken after the rest of the world has had it).
And I understand needing to rant, I was just wanting to make sure you didn't think it was all Smith's fault. But you're right he probably did sign off on something, I hadn't thought of that.
  • are you guys still scheduled to get a theatrical release?
  • I was just about to say that~!! Feb 13th is our release date for Zack and MIrri! Ive held out and not downloaded it! But seriously! DVD release date before we even get a theatrical release! This is bullshit
  • I really like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, but I would only buy the DVD if it's on sale.
  • I enjoyed Nick & Nora, but like Broomstick I"ll probably hold off on buing it for awhile. But definitely worth the rent. (I'm actually broke so I won't be buying anything for a while)
Can't wait to see Zack & Miri as I've wanted to see it since it was in theaters but never found the time.
And MAdacasgar was good so I'll probably check out the sequel at some point but it's not a priority for me.
  • Andrew Aiello
no commentary on the zack and miri disc? Either kevin was too hurt by the box office to record one or weinstein is holding off for a double dip down the line. Shame I was going to buy this too.
  • You're actually right. Kevin Smith had said on his message board that he'd be too depressed recording a commentary, thinking about the money that the film should've made and wondering what went wrong.

But fear not! I guess he came around on the matter, because apparently he's going to be recording a commentary for the film as a SModcast episode. So all is not lost.
  • andrew aiello
yeah I heard those two smodcasts, meh I have the money....I'll pick it up at target on my lunch break.
  • There's also a chance he'll put one out via BD-Live (for the blu verson at least).
  • I am a huge Kevin Smith fan, and I was absolutely disappointed by Zack & Miri. It was funny, but tired schtick really. Buddy comedy, sprinkle with raunch, add a side of irreverant pop culture references and bam! another Kevin Smith movie.

I would put Nick & Norah my 2008 top ten. Fantastic writing that really captured the people I know in that age group right now.

    Nick & Norah > Zack & Miri
  • Fartie Lange
Zack and Miri is the only one of those flicks i have seen and i just bought it

Zack and Miri is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen and its awesome!

i love this flick! when i saw it in theaters the 2nd time there were these girls who couldnt have been any older than 14 sitting behind me and every ten seconds they were going "ewww!!!" "omg thats disgusting!" etc. it was quite hilarious that they had no idea what they were in for when they bought the tickets. heh heh heh
  • andrew aiello
so is there commentary or no? it's a staple of a smith DVD
  • andrew aiello
    nevermind found the answer.
  • rentluvrr
WHAT ABOUT RENT: FILMED LIVE ON BROADWAY?
  • andrew aiello
apprently someone filmed rent, live from broadway....
  • Danny Bonaduce
Yes, it is true. Rent was on Broadway live. This is where it was filmed.
  • Donald
    What no Houndog review?
  • Another week where I save money.
  • I will be buying Zack & Miri... and Madagascar 2 for my kids.
  • IMO Nick and Norah should be under buy it
  • Zack & Miri is a good film. I suggest all of you watch it.
  • I watched both Zack & Miri and Nick & Norah's movies and I was somehow dissapointed by the two of them. Zack & Miri was funny but I guess I was expecting a little bit more from Seth Rogen since all of his movies are usually pretty amazing! I laughed alot but still, it could have been way better. And for Nick & Norah's, I guess I was expecting something less cheesy and more mature... but it was still enjoyable! Michael Cera brings something very unique to the screen... luckily for the movie!
  • Zack and Miri has its theatrical release on the 16th in Australia
  • I wold put madagaser 2 in the SKIP IT section...terrbile movie! only saw it cause i enjoyed the first

as for zac and miri...still cant believe the US has a dvd release before we get a theatrical release
  • gah
I actually bought the Dante/Rosario Dawson relationship more than the Rogen/Banks one. For some reason Z&M felt like Smith was pandering alot. it didnt feel as genuine as clerks or Amy.
  • As great as Alan Rickman is, I had the misfortune of catching Bottle Shock on the plane, and I assure you it is not even worth a rental. It's an entirely laughless comedy, and the aforementioned contrivances are painfully absurd. Save the time and money for one of Rickman's good movies.
