io9 has gotten word that Jeff Bridges has been sent up to Canada to get digitized so that the Disney can create a younger digital clone of the actor for Tron 2. According to the source, the high resolution scan picks up every little detail, and Disney will use the digital scans to make Bridges look younger in post, and even possibly implant the younger likeness on Bridges on a body double.

I’m not so sure the digital scan is for the film itself as digital scanning is also a common practice in video game development. The Los Angeles Times Tech blog reported a rumor earlier this week that Disney Interactive is also working on a new video game with the same title to accompany the 2011 film release.

  • am I the only one who thinks Tron is one of the worst, crappiest 80 movies to ever come out? Honestly. I don't understand people's obsession for Tron, no offense.
  • It was the first movie, aside from The Black Hole to use 3d animation extensively for a mass market. In the sense of Tron, the look went along closely with the plot. I don't like Queen at all but I dig Flash Gordon and its campiness. It's all about nostalgia, that's part of the reason Speed Racer didn't do as well. The current market saw no nostalgic reference to compare it to so the things that make it special were lost.
  • don't get me wrong, the 3D and special effects were COOL as hell, but I hated the story, the acting, and the characters.
  • Cool. To be honest though, I can't see this film appealing to the younger generation. This is for the 80s kids who grew up with movies like this. I tried watching Tron a year or two ago, I'll admit the effects looked great for the time, but the movie was extremely dated. Here's hoping I'm wrong.
  • look at Transformers and Star Wars for proof that it can appeal to younger kids. it's all about aggressive marketing.

I just want to know if and when we get to see the Comic-Con trailer.
  • I really dug the footage from Comic-Con...I hope they still keep that look Bridges had in the footage he looked cool and menacing....even if he looked older
  • I agree the story and characters were very much lacking....perhaps they've learned over the years story comes first and effects second...
  • yeah but since that was the beginning of 3d, the spectacle of it was more enamoring than the script. Now it's all just white noise unless your example is as crazy looking as this Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But i didn't even dig the story in that.
  • the only place to get properly "digitized" is in canada!
  • Which makes me think it's for a game.

I meant an official, non-bootlegged version.
  • Seeing the bootleg clip of Tron 2 made me jizz in my pants.. This film is going to be huge i think..

I agree. I've been waiting years for a Tron sequel, so here's to hoping that it surpasses expectations.

The best thing about Tron is that it has a look that's impossible to imitate without looking like a thief. All the sci-fi action films look the same these days (most have borrowed from the Matrix), so I think that a Tron sequel will be a welcome breath of fresh air.
  • No idea how the first warranted a sequel at all, but the bootleg teaser for the second flick was insanely badass.
  • Im not sure I understand the reasoning behind this. this cannot be cheap. besides, tron? doing another back to the future with a digital MJF would make sense. digitalize the entire cast of happy days for a few more seasons?
  • I figure they're doing the scan for both video game and movie. In the bootleg San Diego trailer, you can see one of the programs is a younger facially grafted Bridges
  • check youtube or the io9 link above...I would expect a teaser trailer in theaters by the end of the summer the same with Prince of Persia
  • This sounds like whta they did for Professor X and Magneto in X-Men 3.
