Donnie Darko Sequel Goes Direct To DVD

Do you remember S. Darko, the Donnie Darko spin-off film we wrote about a while back? You know, the one which follows Donnie’s sister and features no involvement from the original director Richard Kelly? Yeah, that one. The good news is that the film will not play theatrically and will instead go direct-to-dvd on April 28th from MGM’s home entertainment. Film School Rejects reports that the trailer for the film will be screened at the New York Comic Con this weekend (where I assume, and hope, fans will express their outrage by “booing” loudly). When the trailer is released online, we will attempt to do the same in text form (if possible).

The official plot synopsis follows:

“Samantha Darko (Daveigh Chase) and her rebellious best friend Corey Richardson (Briana Evigan) leave on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles in an attempt to ‘make it big’. Their dreams are cut short when their water pump blows outside of a tiny Utah town. Unable to leave until their car is fixed, Sam and Corey are stranded with the locals until their car’s fixed. Sam and Corey are less than thrilled at the delay, and when an unexplained meteorite crash-lands in town that night, it soon becomes clear that there is much more at play than just a chance breakdown. Plagued by bizarre hallucinatory dreams warning her of the universe’s imminent end, as well as grief over her own loss of family, Sam must face the demons she had fled back at home. Aided by the unlikely town locals, Sam learns the true meaning of family and friendship, and in doing so, saves only herself.”

Sounds pretty bad. Also, check out the no-frills teaser trailer below, if you dare.

Oh comon, to boo it? thats just mean man..
  • it should be.
  • gah
Don't rent, buy, or even glance at this on the shelf.
  • Palmer
I want those 51 seconds of my life back.
  • freemachine
The fans of the original Donnie Darko are too intelligent for this dribble.
  • That sounds about right. It didn't seem like the kind of movie that would have success on the big screen, and seems like the kind of project that would not be taken seriously by critics.

Apparently, the blog community is not fond of the concept either.
  • are they releasing it on blu-ray? there is no such thing as a bad blu-ray
  • I had to read the synopsis a few times. It's kinda funny,,, chance meteor strike!!! Comic Con? What does Donnie Darko have to do with comics or science fiction?
  • Well the whole "wormhole" concept in the first one was light weight science fiction. That effect where the worm thing comes out of him and shows him the path he is going to take, that could have come out of a hard core science fiction flick in my book. The whole concept of the movie has a LOT to do with time travel, which is also pretty science fictiony.
  • lol
    such a gay concept
  • Nailed it!
  • I guess it's a good thing this is going straight to video. I know it would have failed at the Box Office.
  • just like every other crap sequel that goes staright to dvd
  • Yeah you said it.
  • Tucker
That teaser was absolutely terrible. I am almost impressed at how bad it was.
  • I want to punch whoever greenlighted this in the face. And the throat. And chest.

Hollywood stop raping intellectual properties. Please. I wish every night for a one year ban on remakes, sequels, prequels and adaptations. I would love to see Hollywood squirm to actually CREATE things.

  • They'll stop making 'em when idiots stop buying their shit.
There are so many people who will see movies like this sitting on the counter at their local blockbuster and actually rent it thinking that it will be good because it has a familiar name. That's why all the time producers will take a movie that only slightly resembles another movie that had been released before, slap that same title with a number 2 on it and then sell it as a direct sequel. People are retarded, studios are greedy.
  • IK!
I actually just pictured someone rapidly punching a person in the face, throat, and chest and now I'm laughing my ass off.
  • Martin
Still, looks better than Southland tales
  • MCA
You said it Martin, I didn't mind Darko, but Southland Tales has to be one of the worst films I have ever had to endure.
  • I did enjoy both Amy Pohler(sic) & Sean William Scott's role in S.T. though. But yes, the movie was a valiant effort at capitalizing on the success of the tones and themes of D.Darko, but failed miserably at it, possibly worse than S.Darko will. And S.Darko will.
  • I'm going to have to support Southland Tales as the underdog few dared to understand. On second and third viewings, the film is quite amazing. I urge you to try and see this for yourself.
  • Straigh to DVD is the best thing for this film. Its still wrong they even made a sequel, but i guess it cant be worse then Disaster Movie..
  • Sometimes I doubt the studio's commitment to Sparkle Motion/quality film-making. This trailer just made me want to watch Donnie Darko again.
  • filmkid
this movie looks rubbish im glad its going to DVD or it should not even been made.

plus aint Justin Chatwin whos playing Goku in Dragonball Evolution playing Frank the Rabbit. on IMDB his not listed as the charater anymore.
  • the teaser seemed like something an obsessed 14 year-old girl through together (after making 20 AMVs) I was a big fan of the original but this looks/sounds terrible. I'll probably check out the panel to see the trailer. I just have to see what this looks like and if the director as any good reason behind it (assuming he is there presenting it)

Let me quote the last half of the synopsis: "Aided by the unlikely town locals, Sam learns the true meaning of family and friendship, and in doing so, saves only herself.” Riiiiiight. Because a feel good movie about the true meaning of family and friends is what the original DD was all about!
Help me understand the thinking behind making a sequel: Donnie Darko isn't the kind of film, like say Saw or whatever, that can be marketed into a franchise; it was never a mass market film. The only people who would rent or buy it to begin with are people familiar with DD. And fans of the original know enough to stay away from this thing like the plague. (At least I hope they do.) So who is this movie for???
  • razzzedbywolves
"Unable to leave until their car is fixed, Sam and Corey are stranded with the locals until their car’s fixed." I hope the movie is as well-written as the synopsis!
  • TropicMike
HAHAHAHA. That sentence just had me rolling! Pethetic and unprofessional are adjectives that are too kind to describe this dribble.
  • flatbed70
This is screening at the European Film Market this week, for anyone who happens to be in Berlin.
  • Deckard
    S. Darko, also known as Step Up 2: The Parallell Universes
  • This is a horrible idea. It sounds a little like U-turn but really bad.
  • I like the fact that we should boo the sequel to this, when normally you say we should give remakes and sequels to far better movies a chance to see if they are good.
  • vid doesn't play here at work, but the synopsis sounds like pure crap
  • I first saw Donnie Darko last year and I was disappointed--the movie was crap and didn't make any sense. It was overhyped.
  • DARKO WAS NOT THAT BAD. NEVER LET HYPE INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION ON WHETHER OR NOT A FILM IS ANY GOOD. MAKE THE CALL FOR YOURSELF. YOU ARE THE ANGRY BRROMSTCK, BE THE ANGRY BROOMSTICK AND DECIDE FOR YOURSLEF. THE FILM WAS OK, BUT QUALITY DOES NOT DEEM WHETHER OR NOT A FILM GETSA SEQUEL, OR A DVD SEQUEL. SEE ANOTHER 9.5 WEEKS WITH ROURKE.
DARKO HAS A ACCEPTABLE LEVEL IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY. THAT IS ALL I NEED. PLUS PATRICK SWAYZE'S ROL IN THE FILM IS HILARIOUS!! HOW YOU CAN YOU NOT LIKE THAT ROLE. HE IS EXCELLENT. SE FILM AGAIN.

    THANKS,

    gajonka
  • mabel johnson
    that teaser looked amazing!
    thank you
  • I dont need to see the Trailer to boo it i can boo it now. BOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOO
  • PATRICK SWAYZE'S ROL IN THE FILM IS HILARIOUS!! HOW YOU CAN YOU NOT LIKE THAT ROLE. HE IS EXCELLENT. SE FILM AGAIN.

    THANKS,

    gajonka
  • Chill out, dummy, they're booing the new "S. Darko," not the original "Donnie Darko."
  • Your the dummy - your it!
  • Spelling and grammar are wonderful things.
  • Wow... that trailer was nothing but footage from the original Donnie Darko. What a terrible idea, but I'll still rent it from the Pirate Bay out of curiosity.
  • onethirtynine
wait... so why is Rorschach's mask on the poster?
  • It was all in his mind, making it a what??? Psychological thriller.
  • Frank
It wasn't all in his mind. Follow the supplemental material, from the website or on the DVDs, it explains the mechanics of time travel and parallel worlds for the film's universe. It may be clumsy and poorly handled but it's still very much a scifi film.
  • I guess we are arguing semantics. I still feel it was all in his mind, mostly because the film ends where it starts, only he stays in bed this time. The only time time travel and parallel universes takes place is in the alternate universe he created by leaving his bed. I don't think it was clumsy or poorly handled, I just think most viewers miss the overall meaning of this story. Is "A Christmas Carol" or "Scrooged" or "Happy Accidents" sci-fi?
  • Some Guy
Please show a little class and refrain from using "gay" as your catch-all expression for something you think negatively of. That's just retarded.
  • I do believe that the phrase "retarded" is more offensive, and if you are asking someone to stop saying gay.
    Why would you say retarded?
