Vanity Fair hired Annie Leibovitz to photograph “10 partnerships that helped generate more than four dozen Oscar nominations this season.” If you’ve ever seen any of Leibovitz’s photographs before (and you have, even if you don’t know it) than you know what to expect. She is somehow able to capture the life, natural realism and character of any of her subjects. And yes, the Christopher Nolan / Heath Ledger photo is a composite. Check out all the photos on VanityFair.com. Thanks to /Film reader Josh B for the tip.

  • Let's just hope Dev Patel's a little luckier.
  • She's an amazing photographer. I loved them all!
  • Annie Leibovitz is the Barry Levinson of photographers.

Their attempts to shoop Nolan into the picture are terrible. They could have at least tried.
  • It's a very good position to signify him as the director. Heath Ledger's up front (as he would be in front of a camera) with the black reflector to his side, and Nolan's looking on as a respectful man who is proud of what he has helped to create. It has a special meaning, I believe, to have him off to the side.
  • "the black reflector" I think it's a flag. It's purpose is to stop light from passing it, not reflect light. It separates Nolan from Ledger, as if to say, it was all him. At least thats what I see.
  • That's what I meant. After I posted that I thought "Shit. I should've said flag." Reflector was just the first thing that came to mind since I have a 5-in-1 reflector that includes a black one which removes light. Most people will know what I mean.

I don't think it was all him, personally. Obviously he did a fantastic job, but I like to think that directors have some part in what they want on-screen from actors. Then again....Nolan didn't stop Christian from that ridiculous voice, so who knows.
  • Damn she is a good photographer. Wonder if she knows any thing bout film. She has the potential to shoot gorgeous stuff.

Plus, despite my Aronofsky fanboydom he really needs to shave that mustache or o back to the full beard he was spurting on the /film front page sometime ago.
  • Evan
no fincher/pitt photo? wonder why, they are both pretty photogenic.
  • The_Kid
exactly, I didn't see it personally, but I heard the curious case of benjamin button was excellent, and if it was then they have made three great fillms together which should have garnered them a spot in this photo shoot
  • I've said it and I'll say it again. Annie leibovitz is an overrated, crappy photographer who only does photos of famous people who make stupid poses. OHHH WOW HOW TOTALLY ARTISTIC!!!! not.
  • The Cruz/Allen picture is my favorite, followed by Mendes/Winslet.
I agree, Leibovitz does some great work. These photos are stunning. It'd be nice if she could do this every year. But her work (and the work of photographers like her) is one of the only reasons why I enjoy reading Vanity Fair.
  • I just made the Nolan/Ledger pick my wallpaper. I totally agree how he was unrecognizable in the role, like Joker was something separate and indistinguishable from Ledger.
  • Haha! I agree totally, but calling her crappy is a little harsh, I don't think anything shot on a Hasselblad can be called crappy. Only photographing celebs is a cop out though, she is borderline paparazzi, but art is in the eye of the beholder, and if people can see meaning in it, it's art.
  • Sounds like you're both suffering tall poppy syndrome. She takes great photos, they are both thought provoking and visually appealing and different from most celebrity photographs. I don't see the problem...
  • don't lie captain howdy the reason you like the photos is cause they are of celebrities. Any other subject and you would think she is OK, but because you find celebrities interesting, you like the photos. Check out TMZ weeknights at 7pm. I never said she was a bad photographer, I just wish she photographed something worth while, like a starving Ethiopian, or a half exploded US soldier. A happy eskimo would be nice too.
  • What's so wrong with this theory? Photographs of talented people happen to appeal to me, just like starving Ethiopians (apparently) appeal to you... The composition of the Nolan/Ledger photograph, for example, only works because they are who they are. Any other folk in that photo and it would be considered amateur.
  • So the only thing that seperates a Pro photographer and an amateur is their subject? Ansel Adams was a hack by your theory. Replace Nolan/Ledger with a father and son. The meaning is the same. You draw your own meaning from a photo. You find meaning in celebrities. I find meaning in life.
  • You make a valid point, but you're saying there is no 'life' to these photos. I'm saying there is. Just like your father and son comparison, I find true turbulence in the expressions depicted here. I'm an independent filmmaker, I love interviews with professionals in the field, everything about the craft appeals to me and images like this spark intrigue.

I'm saying that, in this case, the subjects are most vital -- and that's OK. They're ALLOWED to be that. They don't HAVE to be of starving kids or foreign faces to be considered artistic or even passable. These images achieve what they set out to do, especially to those keen in film, and I don't agree she should be stomped for taking these interesting pics just because of... well, I'm still not sure why you don't agree to them...??
  • I think we are both trying to take eachothers points to the extreme and use them against the other. I just feel photographing celebrities EXCLUSIVELY is a cop out and I would like to see her branch out. I'm not saying there is no life in the photos. I just think the entire world outside movies can provide more interest and emotion then a few people who pretend.
  • Nolan actually encouraged Bale to do the voice, then made it even worst in post. Nolan is in the picture, giving him some credit, but comparing this to the others, the distance between these two and the other photos lends me to think the way I thought : D

  • gah
I LOOOOVE how cocky and douchey Dev Patel has become in just one month of being famous.
  • The Boyle/Patel one looks like a gap ad. and danny boyle = morrissey.
  • Who Dev Patel? is it the dude that looks like he should go back to bollywood?
  • gah
Hmm...I dont like Slumdog or Patel, but some of these comments are bordering on being racist.
  • nodding
Um, Hate to break it to you but Dev Patel's a Brit...London-born and all that comes with that...his parents are African (Kenyan), his grandparents are Indian...he has Indian ancestry and that's it...he can't even speak Hindi so he's not really considered Indian...like people of Swedish (YAY! sorry, my own) ancestry in America have the last name but don't know Swedish anymore...and he was known in the UK before...he was on TV there on an apparently good show called Skins...

Heath looks so broody...I miss him.
  • All those pictures look fantastic. I especially enjoyed the one with Mickey Rourke.
  • They probably couldn't work out their schedules to take part.
  • that photo of heath ledger is amazing! almost dosent need nolan to be in it
  • FreedomPopular
All the Black people I met stole something....

Nope, doesn't make it any less racist.
  • I really hate it when photographers comp images together. I am of the belief that once a frame is captured it should never be tampered with.
  • Especially when they add the second person in almost out of frame.
  • Billy
So you extraopolate from a limited experience of some individuals to an entire race of people? That's just plain old fashioned stupid racist moron logic. And don't be so defensive and hysterical, use your brain for once.
  • Wow. I'm sorry that you've had the exact same negative experience with multiple Indian people to have to say something that sounds so racist.
  • I think that's more like....Indians who work at research facilities.
Because all the India-bred people I've worked with are at a variety of levels of arrogance. Just like anyone else.
I'm not denying that your observation is inaccurate, but you should really think more about the way you say things.
Like you could have said "In my experience, all the Indian males I've worked with have been rather arrogant. While that may only be true about the types of people I work with, I could possibly be a cultural thing."

The Penelope Cruz / Woody Allen picture is my favorite. Cruz looks absolutely stunning.
