Slow News Day: Spider-Man 4 to Shoot in Michigan?

An article in the Oakland Press quotes director Sam Raimi as saying that he wants to shoot some of Spider-Man 4 in… Michigan? “I’ll be looking at Michigan for our second-unit photography on the new ‘Spider-Man’ film,” Raimi confirmed, which probably means big wide location shots.

But Hollywood will only go to Michigan if they can’t get the look needed for the scenes cheaper anywhere else. I mean, if they need a forest, they could always travel a couple hours to Northern California. So one would assume that there is something special about the Michigan locale that might be needed in the story, which at this point, we know nothing about.

To be honest, if this was a normal news day, we probably wouldn’t even be reporting on this story, but as you can see it’s been a slow post-Super Bowl Monday.

This makes sense... Michigan has a great film incentive program.
  • I live in Michigan, and it would be cool to be an extra if it came to that. I wonder what specifically they're looking for.
  • Perhaps Barack Obama will be making a cameo seeing as he is Spidey's partner these days.
  • We should all just relax and take it easy to today. Let all the food settle, you know.

As of right now, I can't think of anything special Michigan has to offer any movie. Maybe there's a really good looking science lab or some buildings that look high tech somewhere where Conners could be trying to make his Lizard stuff, or at least a place where he gets mutated into it.

It's the giant tax break that film companies get when they film there. I got to hangout around the Gran Torino and Miss January set when they came out to Michigan. You can also do pretty much anything you want there without a permit, because the state welcomes any and all of the "Hollywood Prestige" they can.
  • Raimi and Bruce Campbell also have MI ties. It could be they're looking into some empty streets (suburb-esque and downtown) to shoot on, as Detroit has some empy areas, or maybe this will be the first major picture shot at the proposed "new studio" our Big 3 factories may become, which have been idled and ghost towns for quite some time.

What Stella said. Ever since Michigan passed some major tax incentives for Hollywood last year they've been flooded with movie productions. Hillary Swank has a movie set to begin filming in Ann Arbor in the next couple of months. They recently had a casting call for extras. Gran Torino was filmed here because of the tax breaks and there's a long list of other productions gearing up.

It's not like our state couldn't use the influx of money this'll bring with it.
  • Could it also have anything to do with Raimi being from Michigan?
  • Andy Reid
A lot of film companies are turning to Michigan, because of the tax incentives. I live in Ann Arbor, and Drew Barrymore, Michael Cera and Hillary Swank all made stops to film here last summer. They're even making a permanent studio in Lansing to harbor more long-term projects.

  • Wow, Michigan's economy is finally in the shitter enough that it is cheaper to film there than Vancouver.

Film is a business. If they are filming in MI it is probably for the same reasons they filmed in Ohio in the past. It's a lot cheaper then actually filming in NY. The shots will most likely be outdoor shots on city streets.

Raimi went to Michigan State. I think there's a scene in Evil Dead where the chick is wearing an MSU shirt. Or it might be Evil Dead II. Can't remember.
  • Keeping his budget in mind, Raimi will do whatever he needs to for his projects.
  • Maybe Spider-Man can fight the economy and save the auto industry. I'm pretty that would still be better than Spider-Man 3. Actually, he could fight Stephen Hawking for all I care, as long as he doesn't dance, cry, dance, cry or cry.
  • why is it that the OAKLAND PRESS is the one to break this 'news'?

doesn't that seem a bit weird to anyone but me?
  • Jeff
Oakland is one of the biggest counties in Michigan, it's a local paper and as Peter wrote, this isn't really "news" to anyone but people in Michigan.
  • haha, I automatically thought it meant Oakland, CA. Ty for the clarification.
  • not sure if this movie is gonna be anygood. i bought the spiderman 3movie pack and i still haven't brought myself to see the third one yet. it's been 6 months...
  • You could probably wait longer. =D That's what I'd do.
  • ha ha ha... i actually considered it last night, but i ended up watching the dark knight for the 20th time instead... cheers,

I live in Michigan, and my animation instructor at Wayne had Raimi as a student at one point, he was talking to the class about this news tonight.

As for shooting in Michigan, a lot of films have been doing it. I heard Pirates of the Caribbean 4 just rented out the Silverdome (where the Lions used to play has like 80k capacity) to make it into a giant soundstage for the film.
  • Christopher
Raimi most likely wants to film in Michigan for its incentive towards filmmakers. Michigan has let the film community know that if you come to film in Michigan they will repay you 40% of your taxes spent in the state as long as you spend $50k.

They also have other incentives: http://www.michigan.gov/filmoffice/0,1607,7-248--...
  • I can see this falling through! to exspensive shipping a 2nd unit to michigan and with the recession/..
  • tim
filming in michigan is perfect, the whole tax incentive thing, and hey, if you need a forest just drive a couple hours north, detroit may be a piece of shit, but its easy to make it look like an actual big city, michigan actually has just about every type of location a filming crew could need
