New Photo: Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes

USA Today has the first photo from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes which features all three lead characters - Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes and Rachel McAdams as “the deceptive” Irene Adler. I would point you toward USA Today’s article for more info on the film, but it’s mostly about Downey’s Oscar thoughts (which to me were not too interesting). They do reveal that the film is aiming for a PG-13 rating, which I haven’t seen before in print (I’m sure it probably has).

Plot Synopsis: In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, “Sherlock Holmes” sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge.  Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

Sherlock Holmes will hit theaters on November 20th 2009.

  • There was no way this was going to be anything but rated PG-13. This is what is known as a cash grab. The studio is just trying to cash in on Downey Jr.'s recent success. Hopefully this movie ends up being good, but Holmes as a badass street fighter kind of defeats the purpose of the character.
  • I disagree. Holmes was always a badass street fighter. Pro boxer, swordsman, etc. The one story I read he 'casually' unbent a iron rod. This has always been an aspect of his charactor the stories simply focused on his other traits. There are many sides to the talented Mr. Holmes :)

I'm really excited. Downey can turn otherwise boring fare into something really fun.
  • McDamas
    he's the new hugh jackman!
  • Dr. Cox definitely doesn't hate Robert Downey, Jr.
  • I can't wait to see this. I hope it's good or at least mindnumbingly entertaining enough to where I think it's good but it's really not.
    Also, Rachel McAdams is gorgeous.
  • It's nice to see some progress on this film.

So is he going to get the trademark hat and pipe......and cocaine addiction?
  • cineMATTic
Looks good to me. Diggin' Jude and the hat and mustache.
  • Interesting to see how this turns out. Robert Downey Jr is awesome, so im in for the ride.
  • everyone's talking about rd jr. am I the only one who's terrified - ritchie is the last director on the planet for the source material.
  • terry
is it me but it looks like Jude Law should of been Sherlock Holmes
  • There is really no reason for this to be rated R. Do we need Holmes so violent?
  • looks lame, but I'll watch it cos I LOVE Robert Downey Jr
  • I can't wait for this. I've always loved Holmes and Watson and with RDJ in the role I'm super Excited. I'm so glad RDJ is back on top.
And Rachel McAdams is never bad to look at, and she's a good actress to boot!

In Kiss Kiss Bang Bang RDJ played an uneducated pretend detective. Lets see what he does in a role where he is a real detective.

Holmes basically was the prototype for the 20th century superhero/adventurer. He was a boxer and a swordsman true and when push came to shove had to defend himself on occasion. Let's face it. With his and Watson's reputation, every "blackguard" around England wanted a piece of them...
  • Rachel McAdams just looks weird with that haircut to me. Now Robert on the other hand....I wish he didn't have a wife. :P
  • joe
    so stoked for this
  • is it coming out this year?:O excited
  • i hate jude law so much that i really do not want to watch this movie... but i like robert downey jr. and guy ritchie, and everyone else involved in this film...
  • They were filming scenes from this at the Didsbury House Hotel about 5 mins from my house recently. Didn't have my camera with me though :(

I'm actually looking forward to this. Downey Jr cant do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. (well, at least at themoment anyway!)

I wonder if they will bring up Holmes' drug problem. In the BBC series that ran in the early 90s I recalled seeing Holmes hide a needle and syringe in his desk drawer.
  • Taaaaaa
I'm only watching it because Mark Strong will be in it!

i completely disagree with the cast. they are much too young for the general image of the characters in sherlock holmes. and to give sherlock and watson love interests? why thats blasphemy. eugh, everything about this movie seems too commercial and dark. this will be a completely distorted depiction of the legend, an insult to his dark character.

    too commercial and light hearted*
