Star Trek Super Bowl TV Spot

Paramount has released the Super Bowl television advertisement for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, and it’s not just a complete rehash of all the footage we’ve previously seen. The 30-second television spot is filled with probably 40% new material. We get to see James T Kirk have a good ol’ fashion fistfight in a bar, a beautiful shot of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco’s Presidio (yes, that is the Golden Gate Bridge in the foreground), the first meet between Kirk and McCoy, and the fight atop of the Romulan Drills which are tearing into Vulcan. I can’t express how excited I am to see this film. There’s a ton of cool stuff. Watch the tv spot after the jump, and as always, please leave your thoughts in the comments below!

  • Yep, Star Fleet Academy was filmed on location at Cal State Northridge. I was there the day they set up the giant screens next to the library, now I see what they did with them.
  • There just wasn't anything very excitingly new yet.
  • It reminds me of what transformers did....
  • I have never ever gone down the star trek road...but i actually might just for this film

Now this is a great trailer. Even though there are no Klingons in the film...but hopefully it will spark a huge influx of new blood into the fandom. Qapla'!
  • OK. I am really excited now.
  • Looks great! Can't wait.

MITCH YOST IS BACK IN THE GAME!
  • This movie is going to be a blast! For Trek fans as well as others! Perfect way to approach it.
  • That looks fantastic. I'm not that big a Star Trek fan but I will watch this and I think it will change my mind about the franchise.

That's my alma mater Cal State Northridge 20 seconds into it! :)

this movie is not going to be good. sorry trekkies.
  • AW SHIT YEAH!
  • If Diora Baird is in it, I'm watching.
  • Matt
If Starfleet Academy is located at the Presidio, you wouldn't be looking across the bay at the Golden Gate Bridge.

hahahahahaha best internet comment to date
  • this trailer didnt give me the same feeling as the previous one, but its still pretty awesome. i have to see this!
  • cjg
i like it alot, i think this is going to be a great movie
  • I like it, although James Kirk seems a little frat boy. I suppose though if he was starting out that's more the probability
  • Never was a Star Trek fan (or Trekkie), but I'd watch the Shatner series if I came in from work/a night out and there was nothing else on, and it looks like I'll probably watch this, simply because JJ Abrams is a director who knows how to entertain the audience/masses (ala Michael Bay).
  • Star Trek: 2 the XTreme. Is that the name of the movie? I forget. Capt. Picard is rolling over in his casket floating in space.
  • That was too much in too short a time... felt sort of forced and pointless. And cliche. But I guess that was always to be expected. How often has that epic drumming sample been used in trailers???
  • Fartie Lange
yeah the footage didnt have a natural flow to it, it was odd
  • Am I the only one who thinks Karl Urban absolutely sucks in the footage we've seen so far?

    Pine is cool though.
  • looks cool, but there wasn't much new images in there
  • SPARTACVS
That is probably the coolest 30 seconds of advertising I've ever seen.
  • Hearing Kirk cheer near the end reminded me of Anakin's "Yippee!" in Episode I.
  • Konrad
Sounded more like "Spock don't!" or "no!" than "WOOOO!!!!"
  • GORT
Looks good but compared to the trailers for G.I Joe and Transformers this one is ho-hum. Although, Star Trak will be by far a better movie then either G.I Joe or Transformers.
  • I'm excited for this one for sure.....I have faith in this one. Go Abrams!
  • ahhahaha

    yes!
  • So great to see Sci-Fi that has eye-popping color as opposed to the over used post-apocalyptic dinginess.
  • I agree man.

I love the post-apocalyptic stuff, I wont lie...its just badass...but that is definitely all we see now days. Good to see something different but has a nice balance of clean/dirtiness. Atleast this doesn't look like the new Star Wars prequels where everything is absolutely perfect and bright and shiny...etc. Just looked like crap IMO....that needed to be dirtied up.
  • Sweet. I'm there opening day.
  • This looks crazy, a MUST SEE in 2009..
  • man....it's going to be a great year for Effects movies. Can't wait. Actually in the middle of a Star Trek movie marathon & this looks to kick all the old movies' asses. (is that how you spell ass in plural form...I don't know....)
  • Fir3Wolf
I'm not a really be Star Trek fan by any means, but I am excited to see this movie cause it looks awesome.
  • Baconface
yeah im not a fan of trek at all but everything ive seen looks awesome and im excited to see this
  • i agree with that, it looks really good and i'm even not a fan of all this star trek etc stuff
  • Man this looks so good! I am a Trek fan and the series needs a new look after Nemesis and it looks like JJ has brought it. Plus you know he will bring a brain along with the fun unlike most summer movies, so I am expecting very good things.
  • jank
peter, the academy itself was shot on my old campus. cal state northridge. and that building they're running out of is the library. (as you may have seen in sky high). looks like they also cg added san francisco there in the background. remember that post a while back with the big blue screens? well there you go.
    <a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/03/18/photos-of-starfleet-...target="_blank">http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/03/18/photos-of-sta...
  • Yes but a little too fast, but holy shit does that pump you up, even when you're in the movie you still go WHOA!
  • Honestly...when the Transformer trailer has slower edits than you...ya need to take a breath and relax. Yikes, way too fast, even for a teaser.
  • I totally agree, I thought the Transformers teaser had far too many edits...but this one almost made me dizzy. BTW I never have seen any Star Trek movie or TV show, should I watch this first before seeing any of the older movies?
  • Erika
I think it won't make any difference, really. It's not like the old movies will tell you what to expect from this one, since they are so different. And the other movies hardly work well if you haven't watched the series first. This new movie is going to present the characters from the start, so no one needs to be already iniciated to see it. However, I would recommend you to watch the original series and the other movies after this one.
  • Samantha
No, I would watch the older movies first. I have them and, from what I can tell, this is NOTHING like the old characters. I would watch "The Wrath of Khan" and "The Voyage Home" before you go see the new movie.
  • FunkyMunkey
Could they only afford a short ad slot?
  • If its for Superbowl they aren't going to spend THAT much.
But that doesn't mean they have to try and fit that much into it.
They could have just had 2 clips in it.
    Simple.
  • Still not doing it.
  • Palmer
Do I spy a green skinned alien!?...Possibly of the Orion variety?
