Universal has released the Super Bowl advertisement for Land of the Lost. I’m impressed with some of the visuals, but the jokes and plot seem overwhelmingly generic. And I know that the footage in this teaser television spot is probably unfinished, but how bad does the blue screen removal around Will Ferrell’s head in the screen capture above look? Watch the television spot after the jump, and as always, tell me what you think in the comments below.

You can watch the clip in High Definition on YouTube.

Space-time vortexes suck. Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world—a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost.

Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a redneck survivalist (Danny McBride) named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally—a primate called Chaka (Jorma Taccone)—to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they’ll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost. Based on the classic television series created by Sid & Marty Krofft, Land of the Lost is directed by Brad Silberling and produced by Jimmy Miller and Sid & Marty Krofft.

Land of the Lost hits theaters on June 5th 2009.

    Yes, that was pretty terrible.
  • Bout what I expected.
  • Meh, I think you guys fail to realize that the show that the movie is based on wasn't anything special. It was just people flung back in time, add dinos and creatures to the mix. I think this movie could be pretty good.
  • Rwhyan
Yeah that looked so bad it made me want to punch a baby... kinda.
  • That's.... that's not even remotely funny.
  • Krazy Joe
    Actually...that was indeed hilarious!
  • yeah no, it wasnt
  • Its a joke Dane Cook uses sometimes... so yeah its definitely not funny.
  • yeah. 5 and a half years ago! Way to stay ahead of the curve! You are the weakest link! Goodbye!
  • hartman27
It's hard for me to think your up with the times when you use a weakest link reference.
  • agreed, pus a lot of people don't like Dane Cook still.
  • Donald
I'm pretty sure it's called irony.
  • Scott
    I think it's pronounced irony.
  • sounds like hartman27 just made a fool of himself yeah?
  • Krazy Joe
"Its a joke Dane Cook uses sometimes... so yeah its definitely not funny. "

Actually, it was pretty hilarious, which makes it shocking to hear that it's a Dane Cook joke...'cause he's usually the opposite of funny.
  • Reason
You're all unfunny pricks. All of you. You responded to a Dane Cook rehearsal... Shit. So did I. Ah, fuck you guys!
  • kilakev
exactly the type of stuff we've all come to expect from Will Ferrell
  • Krazy Joe
    ...except not very funny.
  • Ante
I think that's what he meant.
  • My assumption with the stuff at the end (that is in the screen capture) is that the dinosaur is being reflected of an object that is behind ferral. Either that or you're all correct.
  • Will's movies are generally progressing backwards, getting worse and worse with each new release. One has to wonder how low it can get before it comes to an end.
  • I think I'd actually be looking forward to it if Night At The Museum 2 wasn't coming out at basically the same time. ha yeah I like that NATM crap. minus 100 for me. I'm not ashamed.
  • maracle
i think the really thought that comes to mind is how friken old will Will Ferrell looks in that shot
  • wow.... so LAME
I really had high hopes with Silberling at the helm...
  • Looks like lights pill to me. Possibly ambient light from the cave he's in?
  • Light spill. Damn you fingers. You suck at typing
  • I just spilled some wine on my carpet and the wine stain is more entertaining than that trailer.
  • I highly doubt a stain on the floor is more entertaining than this short teaser trailer. I guess to some it could be, but to me it is not. Maybe a different kind of stain might be more interesting, I might have to get back to you on that.
  • As long as it's fixed in the actual release, the lackadaisical blue-screen work is a non-issue. I look forward to this.
  • 100000BC
Don't worry, with a company like R&H on it, the effects for the movie are going to be AMAZING. I'm pretty sure that shot is from the footage from Comicon last year, anyway. The rest of the trailer looks great. Stupid/fun, but great looking! :)
  • Seth
I am VERY troubled by how this violates Land of the Lost canon.

Rick Marshall was never a scientist looking for time warps. Further...

Okay, okay. Just kidding. But Marhsall kissing Holly is just WRONG.
  • Looks good! All the vfx looks good. Besides the blue screen key. But almost every trailer even up to the last one has un-finished shots. I will probably be seeing this.
  • Jason
Matt Lauer can eat it. hahaha
  • If its light spill, it still looks really bad.
  • Looks like he is sitting in front of a TV. =S
  • ha, yeah like the old process shots from king kong, but with cgi instead of claymation.
  • You're right: before it matters what it IS, it matters how it LOOKS. And it looks BAD.
  • The Sleestak look dope.
  • I think the fx look pretty descent too. Not sure if I'll see it, but it doesn't look nearly as bad as every is saying...
  • For the record, I never said the FX looks bad, I just thought the bad blue screen key shot was funny (I even pointed out that it probably was an unfinished shot)
  • Simone
Why use unfinished shots to promote a film?! The keying aside, it must be awaiting some DI, the lighting hardly seems to match.
  • Maybe they didn't have time to finish it before the deadline, or maybe they were using shots that weren't even going to make the final cut. I've seen alot of trailers lately that use takes that never make the film.
  • I agree, I don't think the screen cap does it justice, when watching the video again, the keying looks terrible, its around all of his hair, kinda lazy editing considering its going to be aired during the superbowl. I don't care how tight of a deadline they might have had, I could have fixed that in about 4 and a half mins. I'm sure 9/10ths of the amateur film-makers out there could do the same, maybe even quicker. Am I wrong?

  • Sadly this will probably do well.
  • Danny McBride will probably steal the show in this movie as well, haha.
  • That guy is very funny. He should have his own show where he just says stuff off the top of his head. I'm sure I'd be funny for awhile.
  • GaGaGatsby
Just curious why everyone thinks that hes searching for the time warps? instead of accidently finding them and the whole matt lauer thing is cause he cant get on tv? i just thought i would throw that out there, but at the same time ive seen trailers where those scenes were not in the final cut of the movie @release! so dont judge a book by its cover!

Personally i will go see it, i mean it cant be worse the Paul Blart can it?
  • The movie looks interesting and the CG is well done...my only question is, what is Will Ferrel doing there?
  • Alex E-Ham
It's terrible, but it should be better with the budget they had. I'm still going to see it.
