Paramount Pictures has premiered the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Super Bowl television spot on ComingSoon. I have to admit, the 30-second teaser kicked my ass, maybe because I was expecting so little. I think I’m most impressed by over-the-top action in the car chase sequence. And I’m surprised that the special effects look levels above the fx in Stephen Sommer’s earlier films like Van Helsing and The Mummy Returns. And sure, we all knew the dialogue would be super corny - that was to be expected.

This looks like it could be as much fun as Michael Bay’s Transformers.  But I still need to see more than a slickly cut 30-second tv spot. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the movie from people who have actually seen more. But for now, Paramount has got my full attention. Head on over to ComingSoon to watch the trailer in High Definition, or watch it embedded in much lower resolution after the jump.

  • gah
    Ew.
  • count me in looks fun
  • I'll give this movie a chance, though I never watched the cartoon.
  • joe
looks alot better than i thought it would!
  • I'm totally feeling it!
  • I still need to see what Cobra will look like. Until then, I keep thinking it's going to suck. Maybe after I see Cobra I'll change my mind, unless he looks ridiculous and it reinforces my feelings of suck.
  • There are pics of Cobra Commander... and yes... he does suck, <a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/gijoechara...target="_blank">http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/gij...
  • There are pics of Cobra Commander... and yes... he does suck
  • Were those plants toppling the Eiffel Tower? If so, that seems kinda... lame.
  • I think it was acid melting it. Plus I saw drill dosser thing taking out scarlet on the bike.
  • ha yeah it's what I imagine The Happening would have looked like if it had gone on about 5 more minutes...
  • It was some acidic based product. Look at it in HD, it's clearer as to what it is.
  • RocketPuss
it looked more like a type of acid eating away at the Eiffel Towers infrastructure to me, not plant
  • lukas2k
Snake eyes with a lip...? Is that maybe Tomax & Xamot doing acrobatics a la Transformers? The way the teaser is made, it seems like we won't be seeing Cobra Commander until the end... so there definetly will be a sequel...
  • Ghost
Makes sense so far the the main baddy is Destro or at least the public figure in the Cobra Organisation.
  • Its pretty hard to judge one way or another based on 30 seconds of footage!

    chuck
  • Looks fun, at most
  • "and when all else fails...we don't." haaaa best part
  • jimjang
    CGI looks like crap.
  • Leonard Nimoy
yes! but entertaining CGI crap.. And in the end, isn't that the non-crappy CGI? The answer is: No
  • FunkyMunkey
    Gotta agree there
  • i love it! looks badass.
  • frank c
i hope they dont rape my childhood
  • it may be too early to say it but... too late.
  • Yeah, it just looks like something fun to watch.
  • It looks on par with something like Jumper. Pure popcorn, no brains. (which is not always a bad thing)
  • It was a bad thing in Jumper, i hated that movie
  • but for some one/people who grew up on this stuff, wouldn't you be more excited if it was more than just pure popcorn?
and i was thoroughly entertained by jumper, bad movie, but entertaining.
  • Jessica D
Unrealistic and a little over the top. I was expecting more believable action and characters compared to transformers. Still willing to give it a try though.
  • It's based on toys. TOYS!
  • ninja
looks ok, but it's definitely _NOT_ G.I.JOE. Just look at it, what JOE did you see? I count only snake eyes the rest could just as well have been in any other FAILED comic/game/other youth memory ripoff! If they wanted to make a usual action flick, why go to all the trouble of using the JOE name? Where are the frigging lasers? Where is Destro's mask? Why use the same damned suits they used in all other failed films like resident evil and doom? We don't want those wimpy bionic comando suits, we want authentic JOE! I could rant on for hours, but this film does not seem worth it.

  • All films release toys this days even the godfather has toys, scarface, etc.
  • Yeah but G.I. Joe was a toy first, then a cartoon and comic... now a movie to cash in on all that.
  • I think Bratz followed the same marketing, and look how well that live action turned out!!
  • Your not seriously comparing bratz to an action flick are you
  • I was comparing the marketing strategies not the movies.
  • Where is Destro and Cobra Commander?!!???!

No one can make a decision on this film until we see these two characters.
  • edc
thats a stupid thing to say.
you CAN make a decision on the movie, it just won't be accurate till you've SEEN the movie.
  • edc
I see someone disagrees, and thumbsdowned. that person is a moron.
  • Ghost
Destro is there, but he doesn't have the mask on yet. He's the one doing the talking.
  • The music kinda buggs me. Only in the fact I know what band it is. If you are wondering its hollywood undead the song undead. The only thing they are really know for is having good hooks that make you drink the cool aid. The good thing they only used the music to be the music of the teaser. So it not going to turn up on the sound track or anything like that. I think they did not want to use Celldweller since the last trailer he had music set too was speed racer. The funny thing is that was a song that made the movie seem good or something. But it was to static and fake to really work.
  • Wright
Now which version of Cobra commander will we see? Steel mask or towel head?
  • Man, I've said it from the beginning, and I'll say it again. Count me in. *crosses fingers*
  • Teh Grammer Natzi
What did you say your platoon was called?

    I didn't.

THAT IS NOT A GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT RESPONSE! AGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
  • asianrage
    your name is spelled incorrectly.
  • Dennis
yea it is. "I didn't [say what my platoon was called]"
  • DocHop
Good call Dennis I was thinking the same thing!
  • Guy
Looks like alot of silly fun but I will certainly be checking it out on the Big Screen. Eccleston is always very watchable.
  • OK. OK. I'm sold. That shot of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow clashing swords made me wet my pants in anticipation.
