Somewhere in New Zealand, some cork boards are covered in index cards spelling out beat-by-beat the adventures of one Bilbo Baggins and his little magic buddies. Okay, maybe not literally, but Guillermo del Toro did recently spill to MTV that “the cards” were ready for his The Hobbit film. Since then, work has been underway on fleshing out this bare skeleton, conceiving visuals and chewing over casting options.

Early days on his Middle Earth mission, then. Exciting stuff, sure, but for somebody who loved Hellboy 2 as much as I did (and, boy, did I - I went to two press previews and paid for two more tickets too, got the disc in December and loved it all up to a nice shine) there’s got to be some tinge of regret over how long it will be until we see Hellboy 3.

Guillermo tells MTV we can expect nothing at all to move on the proposed film for “three, four years”. On the other hand, the report tells us “Del Toro has given his blessing for another director to take the director’s chair for a potential BPRD spinoff while he is occupied elsewhere.”

Okay… where do I sign? In blood?  Sure.

I’d be interested to see this offshoot blossom, selection of director pending. I’m entirely confident the world that Mignola created (and Del Toro landscaped) is more than rich enough to yield another franchise. It’s a rich place, and stories could travel off in any number of directions without either limiting Del Toro’s options for a third Hellboy yarn, or running aground in a landscape barren of all imagination.

I guess the final question is - which director would you like to see take up this challenge? And are there any BPRD characters you’d love to see featured? The werewolf vogue suggests maybe Ben Daimio is a shoo-in….?

geeze....... del toro is overrated.....lets recap..... Hellboy 1&2, visually impressive but ultimately dumb comical action hero movies (at least the 1st one had a plot).... blade 2, um well it is a blade movie,( i personally liked the first one better).... Pan Labyrinth, this is the one that all of his credit is based on and personally, I couldn't even sit through it... Its not that I have anything against Del Toro, but i personally have yet to see a film from him that was deserving of the "genius" people associate him with.... my 2 cents.
  • Matt
So his movies aren't for you. How does that make him overrated, or undeserving of praise? Are you saying that you're the be-all, end-all judge of talent and quality?

Some friendly advice? Typing with that many ellipses, using phrases like "Let's recap," just makes you sound pompous.
  • Pompous Police at work.
  • Blade? fair enough, but Pans Labryinth, come on..
  • lujs
Dude.. Pan's labyrinth is a fuckin bloody masterpiece..
  • Shad
agreed, Pan's Labyrinth is brilliant...you also forgot to mention Chronos and The Devils Backbone-also where alot of his "credit" comes from...ahem...anyway, my 2 cents.
  • del toro is a god at what he does a bloody genius he is why i love films his work isbeautiful and meaningful god bless him
  • Lobster Johnson would be cool. I really want an HB III though, they gotta finish the story. I mean the last two films have consistently said HB will bring upon the apocalypse, and I want to see that movie.
  • Antony_Kinsey
brendon, what did you love about hellboy 2 so much? i've really enjoyed your perspective since you started writing here, and i'm curious to hear why you found the movie so praise worthy. i obviously don't expect a full review (but if you've written one i'd be interested to read it) maybe just some highlights though. i always look forward to new stuff from you on here. keep up the good work man!
  • I'm not Brendon, but I'll tell you what I loved about Hellboy 2.

Hellboy 2 has some of the most amazing set pieces I've seen in any American film this decade. That final battle between Hellboy and Prince Nuada on the "working clock" stage with the Golden Army was INCREDIBLE.
  • HELLBOY_FAN
I could not have said it better myself.
  • You've choose to express yourself poorly.

I think Timur Bekmamvetov (Wanted) would create a really crazy, visually stunning movie. Also having seen the trailer for 9, I would love to see what Steve Ackerman could do with this.
  • he's an interesting director but he relies to much on computer effects...del Toro is practical effects most of the way and I think the Hellboy world would be dulled down with heavy CGI use...When del Toro couldn't shoot it in camera with a suit or puppet he went with CGI...Timur I think would rather use computers instead of in camera stuff..I'm not using Wanted as an example only his visually stunning Night Watch and Day Watch

Mignola could end up directing himself since he's doing Tin Solider and was heavily involved in the Hellboy movies...
  • If Frank Miller's The Spirit didn't exist, I would back Mignola to do it. But after that abomination, I wouldn't be excited about getting comic-book writers to direct films.
  • well comparing the two is a little premature

while both Goyer and Miller make your argument stronger
  • Donald
Don't be daft. The Spirit isn't meant to be taken seriously, it's a golden age comic for f's sake. It was good for what it was. It's just that nobody wants to be the first to admit it.

    Sorry about that.

Hellboy II was the most underrated movie of 08. I still don't understand why they decided to release it a week before TDK.
  • gah
First and most importantly, did Hellboy II even make a profit? Does that even matter anymore? And who cares about the Hellboy universe without Hellboy? Its not like Rob Perlman is expensive and they can't afford to use him.
  • Bruce Campbell as Lobster Johnson...setup as a cameo or full character whatever it needs Bruce
  • DRF
Get the guy who did "Let The Right One In" to do the BPRD!
  • excellent choice!!
  • WillV
thats the best fucking idea i've read on this subject so far.
  • Bruce Campbell as Lobster Johnson...setup as a cameo or full character whatever it needs Bruce

I could see these directors perhaps being offered the film...

Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Juan Antonio Bayona (Orphanage), Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams) and Alfonso Cuarón (Children Of Men)
  • IK!
Bruce Campbell as Lobster Johnson is one of the best ideas I have ever heard.
  • I would love to see Bayona direct this. Take it in a slightly darker horror direction. That could be pretty sweet.
  • seanovan
Uhhh, some of us don't read comic books, wtf is BPRD?
  • adE
it stands for The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense! not everyone has to read comics u doosh, u just have to pay attention to things in the movie haha im just messin with with u dude it actually stands for Ben Peteresons Rimming Diner! i hear its a lovely place and a movie could really change the world maybe even bring about world piece. ok im done
  • gah
Wow. I nominate this for "Worst Comment Ever".
  • adE
wow! i nominate u the the "biggest twat ever"
  • Donald
I don't think it can count, as I do not believe it is a real person. Or at least I choose not to, in order that I might not kill myself for lack of faith in humanity.
  • WTF...
  • I love Del Toro. But I also think he's romanticizing Hellboy way too much. The more I watched HB2. The more I began to dislike it. It needs a darker tone without the cheesy family love interest. I'd love to see Hellboy take on more of the dark gothic themes with smarmy humor. Like in the comics.

Artistically, HB2 was beautiful but really hollow in the story department. It felt more like a film showing off the bigger budget they had than what they did with the first film.
  • gah
I agree. Its clearly Del Toro's voice in the films, not Mignolas. Although i enjoyed the films on some level, it still didnt feel like Hellboy to me.
  • Same here, whilst it was amazingly beautiful in some parts - it just didn't have the 'feel' that the first film did. Not enough depth in some parts of the movie, and indeed it did seem vacant and hollow. Would have loved to see more around the Golden Army rather than the love interest
  • I don't get why he can't invoke a part of the Pan's Labyrinth-Del Toro into Hellboy. It would be perfect. Because that's the Del Toro I love.
  • I also loved Hellboy 2 but i just saw it 2 times, and my choice for directing this movie could be......Gore Verbinski, he really knows how to create a believable world.
Is his still doing that "Bioshock" movie?
  • adE
believable world? gore verbinski? believable? gore verbinski of pirates of the carribean? believable? dude!

although i did enjoy weather man.........underated movie

what about peter jackson? (I cant believe im suggesting him) but he's working closely with del toro at the moment and how interesting would it be to see del toros take on middle earth and then jacksons take on bprd!
  • Fartie Lange
i prefer the first Hellboy to Hellboy 2. i like the first one ALOT more

Hellboy was a fun monster bashing, action adventure yarn

Hellboy 2 got WAY too into the fantasy crap w/ fairies & shit
  • Mag
    I Agree with everything
  • brett
Haha, I love how much heat i took for that first comment. I really hit a nerve. By the way, just because a movie has elaborate set pieces, cinematography, visuals, ect....it is nothing without a good story, this is why I don't like Hellboy.
  • fex
No, dude. Both your comments are spot on.
  • illegalprelude
im sorry for Hellboy 1 and 2 are horrible movies. Boring/Lame/Shitty shitty action sequences. Did I mention their weird just for the sake of being weird?
  • Matt
Honestly, I don't understand why you can go on about how unbelievable Hellboy 2 is when you say the Dark Knight was one of the worst flicks of the year?

That's not a difference of opinion, it's simply an incorrect observation. Hellboy 2 doesn't hold a candle to TDK.

I think you owe a blog to all of us exactly explaining why you don't like TDK becaue in my opinion, you have no foundation.
  • Im not too familair with BPRD, but i am a fan of del Toro, so i have faith in this being a good film, well at least visually.
  • I don't know about a spin off but I would love to see another Hellboy film. I can't believe it's going to take a half decade for another one.
