World War Z Concept Art

I have always loved concept art. Probably because it represents the absolute coolest a second of time could possibly look like. Everything after the concept art is a big compromise. It will never look that good. Even no so great films have cool concept art. I could look at the concept art for the Star Wars prequels all day long. That said, we have found some concept art for the upcoming big screen adaptation of World War Z.

Okay, that’s kinda a lie. We didn’t find it, IO9 did, and the intense artwork by Daniel LuVisi’s was only created as a tryout for the job. And while LuVisi isn’t saying if he got the job (I’m guessing yes), I’m 99% sure that The Battle of Yonkers, the piece of art seen above, won’t be used for the actual production itself. That said, it’s cool none the less.

This was one of the most difficult images I’ve ever done. Incredibly challenging to the point where I wanted to quit. But through thick and thin I forced myself to complete it.”

LuVisi even through in a few Easter Eggs, including the Quantum of Solace billboard in the corner (the film Marc Forster directed before moving on to World War Z) and a homage to the zombies of Shaun of the Dead.

  • freaking cool thats all that is needed
  • Slo-Mo
Saw this on DeviantArt when he first posted it, it has been my background for a couple of days. Seriously, if the WWZ movie looks anything like this, It might be the greatest movie ever made
  • Brian Rodden
This looks awesome, but Marc Forest is gonna fuck it up. Quantum of Solace sucked. He better step up his game.
  • His name is Marc Forster and it wasn't his fault that the script was pure shit.

Anyway i saw this on on DevArt a few days ago. Really amazing, such huge pictures are usually not his style.
  • shadow
It wasn't only the script, the action scenes were absolutely horribly directed.
  • Personally i liked them a lot.
  • Konrad
His action scenes were phenomenally directed but horribly edited.
  • agreed
  • The movie lacked story and also lacked a good villain imo. They had a great actor and they didn't took advantage of that.
  • TheMarquis
He also messed up the Kite Runner-- so it wasn't all script problems.
  • Never saw that one, but i loved the hell ouf of "Stay".
  • Michael Roberts
Yeah is gotta step it up... i just read something about a new project is working on now. Does anybody know more about it???
  • Scrooge McDuck
yeah i absolutely LOVE concept art to. i love when they release the big books of them after the films come out, like The Art of Superman Returns, Batman Begins, TDK etc
  • amazing artwork, but I fear the film will be weak at best...I have no faith in Forster
  • I'm only a few chapters into WWZ, but this doesn't seem to fit with the tone that's been set so far in the novel. The novel seems to focus more on personal stories rather than big battles, but maybe I have to read a bit more.
  • mcgruff
just wait til you get to yonkers. then all will become clear.
  • I agree very intense concept art...I just hope the film ends up that epic.. as much as I enjoyed Dawn Of The Dead and 28 Days Later they were way too small scale....the mental picture of worldwide armies fighting waves and waves of zombies is too cool for words...this movie will finally put a bigger spin on the genre best known for being cult and small scaled....
  • my boyfriend tried ordering a copy of this book, but it's banned in prison. Hahahahahaha
  • ha ha ha haaaa
  • scaredofthyboyfriend
    pa pa p p-p-pprrissonn?!?!

I worry, because WWZ is two things (IMHO). It is words, simple words, just a retelling of a story from different sides. A lot of cool movies have been made with this concept. What the story re-tells is one of the greatest "stories" ever told, and I fear the guy from QOS (which blew) wont be able to mesh these two great things correctly... *SIGH*

I am having a geekgasm or a nerdgasm. Whatever it's called I'm having it right now.
  • i have never been so enthralled by one piece before. bravo!! hurrah zompacalypse
  • You had me at zombie war.
  • Stevie
The book was terribly over-rated. Brown's style swayed between horridly wordy to juvenile at best. Forced my way through to the end.

The poster does nothing to enthuse. Zombies getting shot by machine guns. only way one could even be remotely excited or hyped by that is if you've never watched a zombie in your life.

While I'm on the subject of the art, let me just point out that the artist doesn't know how to illustrate muzzle flashes and the scene overall is unbalanced like the zombies down in the lower corner were an afterthought addition.

All of that said, i expect some random person to copyright infringe this onto a t-shirt, at which point it will be pawned off as "cool stuff" here and the babbling masses will drown in their drool.

Be sure to wipe up when you're done...
  • Stevie
    Done with what?
  • Weyland_Yutani
    link to Stevie's website??
  • I closed the book a couple of chapters in. Somehow Brown managed to make a zombie apocalypse as dull as dishwater.

This image also looks like it could be "concept art" for any number of films, including the craptastic "Land of the Dead".
  • Rob
Agreed, with regard to both the book and this concept art. I certainly wouldn't have submitted that for a finished tryout.
  • Name
Who the hell is Brown? Do you mean Max BROOKS? You know, the guy who wrote the book. Or were you too busy thinking about how you would cleverly bash two mens works of art. ass
  • Oh my god, that is epic. If the movie is even half as good as the book, I'll see it in a heartbeat.
  • it's pretty damn cool. i really like concept art. especially cars, just cause the possibilities are endless.
  • I'm reading the book at the moment, looking forward to the film adaption.
  • Joe
Damn it, I wish I didn't remember that the Army didn't set up on the buildings and that this entire picture is ruined for me because of that error
  • Was the Star Wars prequel art better than the movie???
  • I just read the book and while I it has some potential as a movie, I think it would have to have about a $200 million budget and be about 3 hours long to match the scale of the book.
  • That book kicked 10 kinds of ass and I'm hoping that the movie adaptation works.
  • Yay for the io9 credit!
  • This makes me remember the Halo concept art of the movie that never was :(

I'm surprised at the number of rants about the book's unoriginal approach to the Zombie Invasion theme. The beauty of the book is that it DOESN'T always talk about the Zombies. The book is about our reactions as a society to this new threat. Which countries were organized (prepared?)? Which countries denied the early warnings and were taken by surprise? All of our advanced military weaponry is for naught in the face of these invaders who are not afraid of stealth bombers, impractical laser and crowd control systems. How does the infection spread from its source country to other continents? What is the source? All of these thoughts are addressed in this book and many others. I foresee the movie being something similar to the modern multi-pathed dramatic stories (Lost, 24, Crash, Pupl Fiction, Traffic, etc.). If done right, it could be a contender for one of my favorite films.

So, all of you who see this image and feel the need to needlessly bash a book, that is far different than almost anything else you'd pick up in the center aisle of Barnes 'n Nobles, in a comment board that's not asking you to, and are so pessimistic that you feel the need to burst anyone who's looking forward to a return to a unique genre with a unique view, please do us all a favor and sit on your hands next time you want to write something.

Bring on the flamers and the trolls.
  • I really wish we had spoiler tags so I would know what to read and what not to read. I hope this movie does get made and I hope it's like the book, I hear the book is awesome, I haven't read it yet, hence the spoiler tag wishing of. Anyway, hope to read the book one day before a film gets made.
  • Im looking forward to this! Interesting book
  • Looks very promising.
  • That picture is amazing. I freaking love concept art. Post more! :)
  • i kept looking at one zombie over and over again, couldnt remember where its from...
    then i figured it out
